Chapter 1: New Prospects

The Wild West is full of dangers, and not just roaming Indian Tribes, or bandits out to steal your gold. Strange things go bump in the night in the unexplored reaches of the wilds. Native tribes have performed mystical rituals for generations to keep the dangers at bay, but western expansion is pushing them out, and the lines between worlds is forever being blurred like the scenery out of a train window.

A mix of Call of Cthulhu, Deadlands, Aces and Eights, this weird wild west game has a little bit of everything.

Tobias keeps looking over the town for a small moment still, then turns back to his companion. "Good idea. Especially if they keep an eye on the road either for their hired assassins or us returning, we should come in on a less-traveled and hopefully less-watched path."

The trio heads into town off a side trail through a small creek bed to keep out of sight from the main road. Good thing so, for as you slip into town and look back at the main road you can see a few shady looking men watching the road into town. So you slip back into the frontier town, avoiding detection for now, and make your way....

Well, that part you didn't give more thought to yet.

"Alright ... now what?" Tobias doesn't like feeling unsure like this. He's normally a bold and confident person, but the events of the past few days have intensely unsettled him, and he feels like that hasn't truly ended now that they're back in 'civilization'. "I don't know where they live, or work, or hang out. We always met them in the street where they accosted us."

They could stay at the Lone Pine. Delton hadn't seen any shady types when they were there last. As the suggestion makes its way through the synapses of his brain, one of his nerves misfires. Instead, he says something different, talking to himself equal parts as much as he is talking to the German and the local.

"The O'Learys are an open wound on this town that the Law won't lift a hand to stitch, if you'll forgive the macabre analogy."

Whether fearful of the Lord and thus respecting the holy man's opinion, or just trying to convince the likely odd-man-out, Delton makes his impassioned argument to Tobias, certain Jimmy feels the exact same. "They killed Mavis and left his wife to mourn him. They sent Bill and his friends after us, Bill's dead and Colter's shot. I've speculated a time or two that they killed Lauralee's man like they did Mavis. Each in need of treatment or a proper Christian burial. Or charity, if they have the stomach for their own pride."

"They won't be expecting us to come up behind them while they're watching the road for travelers. We can wait for more suffering, or we can start the next fight on our terms. Today."
@Vardaen We saw a few shady-looking men - how many?

For group: what do you think? Ramblings of a rattled healer who got his first taste of death? Or do we turn around and serve up a lead breakfast for dinner? I'm itching for another fight, pending the response to the question about their numbers.

Jimmy spits on the dusty ground and says "probably for the best, the last thing we want is to run into more people hired to kill us."

Tobias checks that his saber is loose in the scabbard, lifting it out an inch and then letting it drop back in. He also makes sure he reloaded his gun since they last fought, nodding in satisfaction that he hasn't been completely foolish. "Sometimes the direct method is best. Find them and end this. I'm in."
Rory - I'm liking how your character is dealing with all this! Great RP.

Half-expecting to be rebuffed, Delton doesn't give Tobias too long a glance over. He's an unconventional sort, but most here are not conventional. Most are in distress and crisis, as he had just laid out. Water does not simply run up a well - it must be drawn by hand. Justice and peace do not simply spread unbidden; they must be carried out, by force.

Jimmy adds another good point as well. The doc nods. "Let's turn around then and try to surprise them. Shoot first, and maybe talk later."

He opens his rifle and checks the chamber of his weapon and returns it to its proper form for shooting, fully loaded. Ready for grim deeds.
Thanks, I kinda wondered if he was sounding a little crazy there, but no more second-guessing. There's no true law in this town, and those thugs are there for a reason. Let's go dispatch some proper Old West justice.

He isn't just shaking from mental stress, btw...

Jimmy nods his agreement, as he checks his rifle and makes sure his ammo pouch is full. "I've been waiting for this day for a long time, i've had enough of the O'Leary's boot on everyone's neck." Ready to head out Jimmy pulls out a cigar and offers the group some. He lights the cigar and cracks his knuckles.

Leary of No One

Post by Vardaen » Mon Jul 13, 2020 8:53 pm

The trio pause, the conversation doesn't take long. Perhaps a bit of grit and gumption has taken over these men after their trials in the wild. Standing there you check your weapons, reload, and load up. A few passer-bys take notice. Men loading guns is nothing out of the ordinary, but there is a look you have that sends a lady scampering who scoops up her child.

You shoulder your packs and stride down the middle of the road back toward the edge of town. Eyes open for trouble, you spot the men, four of them. Two just lean against porch posts chatting as they watch the road into town. Another two sit in chairs on the other side of the road, one is whittling, the other spitting his chew into the street. A few folks walk by, a horse with a man pulling it strides down the street. Its not too busy. Delton elbows Jimmy and points with his chin up to the roof of a nearby building, a man with a long rifle sits up there lazily without much attention. All these men have that look about them, but what seals it for you is when you get a bit closer you can see that man with the knife whittling is actually one of the O'Leary brothers -- its Liam, the larger of the three, his brothers aren't part of the crew here today.

For the moment hey don't see you coming.

"Sheeee-it," curses the big German. "If we just walked up we'd get shot from above, never mind all the other guys with guns. What do you think? I'm not seeing a good approach. Maybe if we get in the back of the neighboring building and take down the long rifle? Then we can ambush rather than getting sniped?"
If Mads Mikkelsen was standing there threatening me, I'd find somewhere else to be. Fast.
