Chapter 1: Neverwinter to Phandalin

1491 DR, Neverwinter, Sword Coast, Faerûn

The year is 1491. Neverwinter, also known as the City of Skilled Hands and Jewel of the North, is a multi-racial city-state sitting on the northwestern Sword Coast of Faerûn. The city is regarded as the most cosmopolitan and the most civilized city in all of Faerûn.

Neverwinter became a center of civilization, peace and culture and was widely viewed as a marvel by visitors. This trend lasted, seemingly unbroken since its founding until 1372 DR when a disease known as the Wailing Death laid low most of the city's inhabitants. Then, in 1385 DR, the Spellplague struck. In 1451 DR, a powerful eruption of Mount Hotenow laid the city to waste and killed the ruling royal family.

Fourty years later, Neverwinter is rising from the ashes. Lord Neverember’s efforts to restore Neverwinter’s glory are paying off, and the city is slowly being reestablished as a center of civilization in the Sword Coast North. Neverwinter is a city full of opportunities, and as word spreads, merchants from both the North and the southern lands are becoming interested in trading with the city once again. The population count is rising in response.

Individuals of all races, backgrounds, and faiths have begun to gather in Neverwinter. Some open shops, some encourage trade, some hide in the shadows and take what they want, and some are hired hands available to hunt monsters.

Without guilds to restrict trade or construction, those who wanted to start a business in Neverwinter could simply do so, and those traders who dealt with basic products, such as foodstuff, became wealthy just by selling their goods in the city. Likewise, there was demand for many jobs, and those who wanted to offer their services either as workers or as apprentices had plenty of options despite the high competition.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yesterday before dawn, three notices were posted across Neverwinter; one in the Protector’s enclave, another by the city gates, and the third in the docks, each asking for adventurers to perform a simple task – provide escort for a wagon, of supplies of no great value, a few days’ journey outside the city. The notices listed the Driftwood Tavern, located on Coriol Street, near the city gate, as the location to inquire about the job and asking for Gundren Rockseeker.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This morning, the climate is temperate, there is a pleasant hum of activity in the streets, and the smells of delicious meats being prepared for the noontime meal hang in the air.

The usual prospect a new month generally brings is on everyone’s mind in the Driftwood Tavern, one of city's taverns. While the Moonstone Mask might be the most decadent and famous tavern in the Protector's Enclave, the Driftwood Tavern's ale casks are much larger and the pours are more generous.

As a trickle of patrons enter and leave the perpetually warm, generally inviting building, they acknowledge Tess, the barkeep’s, smile with her greeting or farewell. Tess is a young, red-headed human woman dressed in green and yellow today, her long hair tied back into a ponytail.

Standing behind the bar is the tavern's proprietor, Madame Rosene. Rosene is a middle-aged human woman with short graying hair dressed in brown and green. As she keeps an ever watchful eye over the patrons, she stands talking to a trio of men sitting at the bar counter.
Among the patrons are three long bearded, middle-aged dwarves of slightly-taller-than-average stature. They sit in a corner table and opposite of a lean and fit human with a receding hairline and graying hair. As one dwarf looks over a well worn map, the other dwarves point, talk over each other, and somehow drink all at the same time as the human watches coming and goings of the patrons. A handful of packs rests nearby against the wall.

Three other patrons sit at the bar. One human male complains about his life and the other two, an half-elf woman and a human male, are city watch sergeants. Madam Rosene smiles and continues her conversations with them as she refills their mugs as she brings them bowls of stone soup and a baguette.

Throughout the room, a handful of tables are empty and a few others have a patron or two sitting and drinking.
As you arrive, please give a short physical description of how your character appears to the others. None of you have ever met before (unless you have), so think about how your character will react to the others, greet them, and pass the time until the last one arrives. Once everybody is ready then we'll move on to talking with the dwarf and human sitting at the table with the map.

You can either have seen the notices posted and went here looking for work, be a regular at the tavern, or just be someone passing through. Eventually though, you'll need to get hired by the dwarf so we can continue the adventure path and onward to Phandelver.

Goal - to get talking to NPCs by late next week, get hired for the job, I have most char sheets ready now

For RP sakes, feel free to order 1 ale and entree for free (no coins removed from char sheet), if you want.

A male half-elf walks into the tavern. He looks around, winking to the half-elf woman and strides up to the bar.

He has short black hair and is dressed in extravagant silk, satin and leather attire in black, gold and blue. He is holding a sturdy black staff and a backpack with some equipment. He has a friendly face and a wide smile. The half-elf moves around with suave elegance, as if he owned the place. Observant onlookers might notice some wear and tear on the clothing, and an old travelling cloak fastened to the backpack.

"Inkeep, a glass of wine for the thirsty!" he says suavely and then he turns to walk over to the dwarves. He bows slightly. "Lorenzo the Magnificent, at your service." He pauses for a second. Then a deck of cards appears in his hand. "Pick a card." he tells the closest one.

Tess, the barkeep, smiles at the newcomer half-elf and greets him upon entry. "Yes, sir." She says as she heads to retrieve a glass of wine.

Meanwhile at the corner table, the dwarves continue arguing, pointing, and moving the map back and forth between the three. As Lorenzo approaches, the human sellsword stands and walks over to greet and block the half-elf from the dwarves.

The man raises an eyebrow as he replies, "That's quite a title you have there, "Lorenzo the Magnificent". He glances back over his shoulder at the dwarves and back to the half-elf. The solemn and hardened man then looks at the deck of cards and then to the half-elf and says, "No time for games today. Can I help you with something?"

As the sellsword is speaking with Lorenzo, two of the dwarves stand up from the table and quickly finish any remaining ale in their mugs. Taking their packs from against the wall, the pair of dwarves walk behind the man slapping him on the back, "Ease up, Sildar. You're too serious."

Both dwarves chuckled as they proceed to exit the tavern leaving one dwarf and Sildar at the table. The third and remaining dwarf rolls up the map and begins to slide it into a map case.

Lorenzo flicks his fingers, and the cards disappear in mid air. He frowns. "Oh, that's too bad. Games can tell you a lot about who you are and also they are quite entertaining." He pauses and smiles again. "Well actually yes. I was looking for someone called Gudren Rockseeker because of a job."

The road has been long, and Neverwinter is a hungry city in which to arrive. Pandjad is hungry, too. Hungry for glory and the rush of combat. Hungry for the roar of the crowd and the groans of the defeated.

But also hungry for food. Ambition can feed the soul, but the stomach has its own demands.

While unsuccessfully checking the docks for word of a fighting pit, he spies a notice. Reading it carefully, he tears it from the wall and heads towards the Driftwood.

Upon arriving, the dragonborn towers over the tavern's few denizens. Tall and muscled, he is dressed for travel, with spear, maul and javelins strapped across his back. Tied to his rucksack is armor of fearsome appearance. Upon spotting the dwarves, he strides purposefully up to them.

"Gentledwarves! Which of you would be Rockseeker?"

Pandjad raises the notice, a gleaming, toothy smile seeming to twinkle in the tavern light.

The dwarf who continued to stay at the table, finally stands up, turns to Lorenzo , and says "Not drawing a card can also tell you a lot about someone. I'm Gudren," he says as the Dragonborn enters.

At the Dragonborn question, the two dwarves leaving replies "Aye, Aye, but he's the brother you'll need to talk to. We've got other matters to attend to."

Huddled in the corner of the room is a small little pathetic creature. The locals have seen him around, begging for coin on the street. No one knows his name, no one's bothered to ask, normally the guards just shout at him calling him, Rogue, or Blackjack, or Cheapshot, or Goodfornothing, or Miscreant, or Scoundrel, or Sneaker or Lowblow, or Pilferer, or... well you get the idea. He's only just over three and a half feet tall, easily mistaken for a human child, or he would be if not for his dark grey and slightly stone like skin. He's a Deep Gnome, for those in the know, and a terribly skinny looking one, with just an odd tuft of hair on the top of his head. His clothing is old, mostly patched by hand, dirty, and he has a smell to him that says he hasn't washed in a long while. As the others enter he's licking clean his plate, the whole thing blocking out his face as he does so. Recently he begged enough coin from a passing caravan of pilgrims to afford a few meals and a few mugs here over the last few days. That money however has just run out.

The talk of a job causes him to look up over the edge of the plate, and he gazes at the new arrivals, he mutters to himself, in a long slow drawl that is laced with a deep depression, "Oh boy, this is going to be trouble for everyone." Yet his slate grey eyes sparkle a bit, and his ears perk up as he watches and listens to the interactions of the others.

Lorenzo smiles. "Indeed it does." he answers the dwarf. "Well, Gudren Rockseeker. It is definitely your lucky day today, since Lorenzo the Magnificent is interested in your job opening." He glances at the Dragonborn. "The more the merrier, eh?"

Gudren Rockseeker, the dwarf brother who remained in the tavern as the other two exited, nods his head and rubs his hands together. "Aye. I am looking for four or five to ride with a wagonload of provisions for a couple of days’ southeast to Phandalin and drop off the supplies in town. If you're looking to sign up, speak with Sildhar Hallwinter, here and he'll fill you in with the details."

The dwarf then takes his empty mug from the table and returns to the bar for a refill.

Sildar, the sellsword, looks over the half-elf and dragonborn and says, "I have five billets that need to be filled. It pays 10 gold pieces upon deliver of the provisions to Barthen’s Provisions. It's the only trading post in Phandalin. The wagon, horse, and goods will be ready to depart tomorrow morning at the South Gate. I'm still looking for three more. Questions?"

Another newcomer joins the tavern. A bulky half-orc pushes through the door, the dust of the road still flaking off him. He dresses primarily in furs, with pieces of leather armor added for protection. Perhaps he is a barbarian from the Uthgardt tribes, as he certainly has the look of those wildmen. He carries a heavily carved staff, although the mud from the journey obscures much of the imagery. The pelt of a direwolf hangs off one shoulder like a half-cape.

He moves up to the bar and lays down a few copper. "Food. Drink." His voice sounds a bit gravely, as though he is not used to speaking aloud. Once he has his refreshment, he moves over to the obvious gathering of bravos and mercs. "Here for the job. Heard there was hiring for guarding a small caravan."
