Sasha takes the letter and reads it. Her eyes flick up from the page and bore into Iarno's features. "This is treason."

Arveene hands the glass staff to Lorenzo. "It's all yours, friend."

The gnome is looting the place, he leaves the interrogation to the others. When the papers come up he inspects the invoices, he's looking for the list of items. "Hmmmm mmmmm" the goal is to see if the various components are or could be used to make poisons, or other similar toxins. What does he need all the alchemical items for.

Then he helps tie the man up, he's decent knot maker. Then he does something else strange, he forces the man to take his boots off. "Can't run well in bare feet." Is all your little rouge says as he de-boots the man forcefully.

The staff requires attunement before the magical properties begin, but you can still use it as a staff to bludgeon at normal staff dmg

Some magic items require a creature to form a bond with them before their magical properties can be used. This bond is called attunement, and certain items have a prerequisite for it. Without becoming attuned to an item that requires attunement, a creature gains only its nonmagical benefits, unless its description states otherwise.

Attuning to an item requires a creature to spend a short rest focused on only that item while being in physical contact with it (this can't be the same short rest used to learn the item's properties). This focus can take the form of weapon practice (for a weapon), meditation (for a wondrous item), or some other appropriate activity. If the short rest is interrupted, the attunement attempt fails. Otherwise, at the end of the short rest, the creature gains an intuitive understanding of how to activate any magical properties of the item, including any necessary command words.

The Gnome doesn't find many ingredient lists or recipes within the mage's quarters. Most likely, the mage's workshop, which Glasstaff mentioned was located through the only non-secret door in the room, would contain any spell lists, recipes, or other items of interest.

"Well?" Iarno says, as if he's waiting on them. "My boots? You expect me to walk barefoot?"

"Thank you." Lorenzo takes the Staff and will meditate on it as soon as he has time.

Your gnome shrugs, and tosses the paper into the fire (if there is one) and pauses and looks at the man, "Yes, barefoot. Makes it hard to run away without your boots on. Its an old Deurgar trick." The little bugger actually smiles at seeing Iarno's displeasure.

"He can't, we've tied him up. But you make a good point." Arveene shrugs and pulls out her rapier, not really minding the gnome's boot-thievery. "You heard him. Step out of your boots. Or you can stay seated and he'll do it for you. Just don't think you can kick him in the face, we're onto you."

Iarno replies, "Okay. But a kick to his face would only improve his appearance." The mage sits back down into his chair.
