Chapter 1: A Night to Remember

Post by Hungry Xenomorph » Tue Feb 04, 2020 12:35 pm

The pyrotechnic test goes off without a hitch creating a dazzling display of lights, fire and lasers weaving intricate patterns in the background and foreground of the stage. Pleased with himself Tojiro heads back to the green room with Xander as people start moving through the gates and taking their places, on their way back Xander and Tojiro bump into Tanya Haskell, the lead singer of tonight's headliner Perturbator, she gives Xander a slight wink as she heads back into her dressing room. Xander and Tojiro joins the rest of the crew in the green room as they complete final preparations for the show.

The preparations take about 40 minutes to be completed and by now the park is full of eager people. In the green room Lia brings out a bottle of tequila for what has been now dubbed "Band Prayer", they each get a shot glass and down it before each heading to their designated posts. Xander heads to the stage flanked by Robert and Lia, Tojiro heads to the control center and Juan slinks off to the VIP section for some networking opportunities.

On the stage the MC, a short man with cyberware arms clearly made to emulate Johnny Silver hands, is riling up the crowd. "And now without further a due, here he is Xander Thibedeau!" The Crowd cheers loudly as Xander steps on to the stage holding his keytar. On the distant horizon the sun is slowly setting over Night City.

Lia stands in the shadows off stage, watching the crowd through the pyro of the opener. Firepots ruin visibility, but anyone caught in one is going to be slowed down. She glances at Roger then back at the crowd fingers plugging the SMG into the 'link. Just in case. "Worst part of the job," she nods toward the crowd, "noise, lights, lots of people. Can't tell the innocent from attackers until it's too later." She checks the 'link between her 'ware and the SMG she grabbed on the way out of the Green Room, then pats blade at her side. By this point, she doesn't even notice the show itself.

Tojiro leans forward in his chair, a pair of heavy duty noise cancelling headphones half on, only hearing channels, cues, and crew chatter in one ear, the other getting the full effect of the performance. Fully engaged in the inbetween-places that define his life: man-machine, idealist-cynic, drugs sex rock'n'roll-precision & safety, head bobbing to the music as he barks orders to the stage crew.

A crooked grin tugs at his scars as he turns to Perturbator's tech, "Almost as much fun as the after parties, neh?"

With the call, Xander charged to the stage, sliding on his knees, holding his keytar up so the crowd could see it. He let out a scream of excitement, jumping up to his feet and right away kicking into a instrumental song. The helmet's screen resembled sound waves, following the beat. Xander was having the time of his life.

Robert keeps his rifle safely stowed in a hidden compartment near the stage, but otherwise doesn't seem to be nearly on edge as Lia is. He's the driver, not the bodyguard. He's no coward over pushover in the fighting department, but he has slowly grown to trust Lia's competency. He is still a paranoid bugger and thus has weapons nearby, but he isn't as amped up as he would have been without her.

In the control room Tojiro and some of the Perturbator staff get to talking shop and life, the room thumps and buzzes with the energy of Xander's music, the bass shaking the walls of the otherwise mostly soundproof room.

On the stage Xander is going haywire on his keytar, the bass resonating heavily and vibrating the crowd into ecstasy, everyone is dancing and going wild, from the stage Xander can see a couple flashers in the crowd, as the set is hitting it's crescendo, Tojiro presses the button to set off the pyro and nothing happens, the fireworks fail to set off and the lasers that were supposed to project images on to the smoke left behind by the pyro do set off but without the smoke they don't really do anything.

One of the in the room looks towards Tojiro and gives him a slight grimace, "Ouch!"

Luckily for him Xander's performance is good enough to keep the crowd dancing and not focusing on the pyro failure.

As the set draws to an end night has fallen over Night City and the bright lights of the Downtown area brighten the horizon in the distance. Three Ay-Vees fly overhead heading towards the East Marina." Xander finishes the set by looking up at the sky and pointing a finger up as the last notes linger in the air before walking off the stage to great clamor. Backstage Xander joins Lia and Robert as they make their way back to the green room.

With the sound check complete and Xander about to hit the stage, Juan makes his excuses and heads down the short corridor to a side entrance to the small VIP booth off to one side of the main stage.

He gets a drink from the private bar and eyes up a few of the other suits there, obviously there to try and snap up Xander or one of the other acts on tonight. He makes small talk before the volume gets too loud, but makes it perfectly clear that ‘Xander is my esse, not yours’.

He almost eats his words as the light show fails to materialise but Xander’s showmanship and his vocal talent more than make up for the damp squib of a pyro show. Once Xander’s set is over, he heads back to the greenroom, making a bee-line for Tojiro.

“What was that about esse? What the hell happened?”

Tojiro holds up a placating hand, "Can't tell for certain until after the show, homes. Test went perfect, so it's not the mix. Lasers ran in time anyway, so not the sequencer. Best guess is those cheap frakking safety igniters! We wouldn't have this issue with a short twist of detcord!" Paces back and forth as he rambles out the troubleshooting, agitation clear in his tone and expression.

Robert steps in, trying to be better about engaging rather than being aloof. A problem he's had since childhood, having to rely on himself after his parents died. But being part of this team means, well, teamwork. So he tries to help. "Hey, how about I look over things with you after the crowd clears out, Tojiro? Good to have a second pair of eyes, and more hands to make the work go faster. We'll find the root cause, so we don't have any issues next time."
