Prologue: Inauspicious Beginning to a Starfleet Career

Stardate 1/9407. The Federation has enjoyed a century of relative peace within its borders. The long and devastating war against the Romulan Star Empire is all but forgotten and the Federation’s border with them remains tense, but stable. The Klingons remain silent as well, perhaps still engrossed in a conflict with the unknown enemy on the far side of their empire. The Federation’s peace-time focus is now on research and exploration, although Tellarites and Andorians argue for a stronger navy of gunships and frigates. The compromise is the new Constitution Class Cruiser. Equipped with the most advanced weaponry and home to state-of-the-art scientific research and medical facilities, these debutants of the fleet can operate for years beyond the logistical support of star bases. It is the dream of every starry-eyed Star Fleet recruit to serve on these ships.

Shur
When Shur contacts Lieutenant Commander Carter, he finds Carter is already aware of Bhartuum’s proposal. The Orion came to Carter first and made it sound like Shur came up with most of the plan and was already onboard. Carter doesn’t trust Bart and isn’t convinced that Bart had nothing to do with his vehicle problems. Nevertheless, he is willing to move forward with the Orion’s proposal. Carter’s only roadblock to clearing the exchange is his supply officer, but he figures it will be easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission, and he can always pull rank. 3I only sells its excavating equipment through licensed commercial dealers, so Shur would have to arrange the sale himself, or get someone who can. It would also be against Starfleet regulations for Shur to accept a commission on the sale from his family’s company. In the end, it is up to Shur to decide to make the deal happen or not.

A week later, Lieutenant Murray of the Orbital Station Operations Command is given a public commendation for his quick and decisive actions during the Kingfisher incident, when an orbiting trader vessel exploded and disrupted the orbital patterns for nearly every ship waiting to dock. Lt Murray gives a brief broadcast speech where he magnanimously thanks the many anonymous junior officers who quickly carried out his orders.

A week after that, Shur receives the call he almost forgot he was waiting for: “USS Pas-de-Calais in-system and reporting. Commodore Singh requesting navigation pattern for immediate docking.” Cadet Serao beams at Shur, unable to hide her excitement.

Jacob
As chilling as it is for Jacob to read about the final moments of the ship he was supposed to be serving on, the fate of the Gulliver has put his cadet cruise--and his future career--into question. Jacob knows of no greater provocation from the Klingons since the Arcanis Incident* and wonders if this will lead to war. Perhaps that is the reason the Federation has been hush about the Gulliver and why he has been left in limbo.

Resolved to be proactive about his situation, Jacob calls Cadet Placement Services and requests a transfer for his cadet cruise. The first person he talks to is a male voice who seems aware of Jacob’s situation before Jacob explains it in detail. The voice is surprised by Jacob’s request and tries to talk him out of it, citing a number of adverse consequences such path could lead. Finally, the voice relents and tells Jacob someone will be in touch with him shortly. A few hours later, a female voice from Cadet Placement Services calls Jacob and takes a much more sympathetic tone with him. She tells him she has some good news and some bad news. The good news is that his transfer request has been accepted and his new assignment is aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard. The Bonhomme Richard is a Constitution Class heavy cruiser. Constitution class ships are the most coveted postings in Starfleet due to their state of the art facilities, armaments, amenities, and engine systems. The bad news is that the Bonhomme Richard is weeks out of port and its whereabouts and mission are classified. Jacob will be put aboard the soonest ship to leave Starbase 11 whose heading or mission will most likely rendezvous with the Bonhomme Richard in the near future. Jacob will be expected to serve aboard whatever ship it may be that caries him to the Bonhomme Richard.

Alik
Unfortunately, neither Alik nor Weathers find much overlap between Weathers’ training as a Helmsman and the skills needed as a member of Alik’s work team. Weathers endures the long hours, the exasperation at her incompetence, and the unkind speculation about the skills she has to offer. She never lets and opportunity pass to verbally thank Alik for shouldering her burden. As the weeks pass, things get easier for both Alik and Weathers. Through repetition, she is able to perform certain data monitoring, recording, and entry without necessarily understanding the theories of physics behind it all, and her charming personality starts winning over some members of the team. Alik isn’t forced to constantly watch over her and he hears fewer grumbles about her presence. Poljos never warms up to Weathers and his relationship with Alik cools as well.

Alik regrets the negative effect bringing Weathers on has caused with Poljos. The gruff NCO has been in the Service likely longer than Alik has been breathing, and he knows he could learn a lot from the man. And perhaps make a positive long-term connection. That seems unlikely now, but at least he can try to prevent further damage by remaining professional while on the job, and continuing to perform with excellence.

During their off-hours (admittedly, fewer than he would like), he tries to get involved with the others' current events to take his mind off his own problems.

Jacob looks to the positive as he discovers his new assignment. There was some worry that he'd be relegated to some glorified salvage vessel; the Bonhomme Richard was a Constitution-class vessel, possibly the only thing better than his initial assignment. Sure, he'd have to serve aboard whatever vessel was ferrying him there, but that was to be expected. This was, unexpectedly, an auspicious beginning to a starfleet career.

Of course, this optimism was tinged with the fact that there was almost certainly a war coming. That, or these attacks would continue unabated. Perhaps the chickens of Arcanis were coming home to roost. Either way, he could expect the Klingons would be targeting Federation vessels from here on out. DeVries will tell Alik the news, and what time he has left at the station, he will spend a little less straight-laced, considering he might be going off to his death in battle.

Alik
Alik’s long hours and irregular schedule make it difficult to stay informed and connected with his other friends, but with a little effort he is able to meet and visit with everyone on occasion. As assigned junior bridge officers, cadets Shur and Serao work standard shifts. They work together and seem to be excelling in their duties. Cadet Campeador is doing investigative work rather than patrol or sentry duties and couldn’t be happier. Jacob shares his news with Alik. During his time at Starbase 11, Alik works on many classes of ship, including Ptolemy class transport-tugs.

One morning, as Alik casually scans the work schedule of the entire orbital station, he does a double take as he sees the USS Pas-de-Calais is moored at one of the station’s pylons and is being serviced by another engineering crew. It must have warped into the system during his off hours and been given an extremely high priority placement in the line of ships waiting to dock. It dawns on Alik that his time as a temp-duty officer at Starbase 11 is coming to an end in a matter of days, if not hours.

Jacob
One morning, Jacob receives a call from Cadet Placement Services telling him the ship that will take him to the USS Bonhomme Richard is currently moored at Starbase 11 and will be ready to leave in the next 48 hours. The ship that will ferry him to his cruse assignment is the USS Pas-de-Calais. For some reason, the name of the ship seems familiar to Jacob.
For your next post, we can have Alik and Jacob conversing together if you want. Or not. You can also decide how you bid farewell to the people you have been working with. We will soon be ending the Prologue and moving to the first act!

Alik does a double-take at the name on the work schedule, and confirms that yes it is in fact the USS Pas-de-Calais. The ship they were supposed to be working on in the first place. He's gotten a lot of good experience doing this temporary tour on the starbase. Others, such as Cadet Weathers, likely felt they were instead in purgatory.

At the end of the duty shift he mentions to the work crew that his assigned Ship has finally made spacedock, and he anticipates he has at most a couple days left on this detail. He promises the engineers that he will remain focused and professional while still on assignment with them, and won't be slacking off just because he is about to get out of there. Alik also makes a mental note to personally thank each of the crew during his next shift, especially Poljos.

---

After the shift he rushes back to their quarters. "Jacob! Shur! Everyone! The Pas-de-Calais has docked! We are almost out of here, and on to the star lanes. Warping all over the galaxy, wherever Starfleet needs us."

Jacob turns to his old friend. "Well, looks like we're due for a road trip, Spacer," he says. His voice hides the apprehension about what he knows with the Klingons. He has told Alik, and Campeador probably no doubt knows about it. "So, any idea what we're hauling along with us? The Pas is a hauler, after all." Jacob uses a nickname he has heard was given to the vessel, although he wasn't 100% on whether that was true or if the full-fledged officers were having some fun with him.

"That's a good point. It's not a cruiser heading out looking for a fight, so it must be running around the stars moving something from Point A to Point B. Or more realistically given the complexity of supply chains, dozens of things to dozens of interconnecting places." He scratches his head. "But what that might be, I have no idea. I guess we'll find out soon enough."

Jacob
The call from Cadet Placement Services doesn’t leave Jacob much time to say good by to the field researchers he spent over a month working with. Carter and the team throw a small party for Jacob after the end of the next workday. After a round of congratulatory singing and a few well-meaning but halfhearted offers for future research collaborations, Jacob is left to pack and prepare.

A technician comes out to fix the earth-mover. It seems the cooling system was switched over to a no-atmosphere setting. Instead of sucking in atmospheric gas, the system was looking for attached tanks of cooling gasses that weren’t there, causing a complete system shutdown. The nature of the problem doesn’t answer the question of whether or not it was sabotaged, since the switch could have been inadvertent or intentional. Whatever deal the Orion trader was trying to put together seems to have fallen apart, and Bart seems to have disappeared completely.

Alik
When Alik tells his crew that his time with them is reaching an end, they almost universally express their appreciation for his help increasing their team efficiency rating. There is some talk about meeting afterhours for a send-off party, but there simply isn’t time between the long work hours and short down time for everyone to get together. Individual farewells are a few words of well-wishing and a slap on the back. Poljos makes a point to meet with Alik privately and tell him that he is one of the sharpest officers Poljos has had the privilege to work with.

* * *
Word of the Pas-de-Calais at dock is welcome news to Weathers and Campeador. The bridge crew of Shur and Serao seem to have already known. It also seems that, for the near future at least, science officer Jacob will be hitching a ride as well.

The Pas-de-Calais doesn’t have an attached cargo module while in port, but it is sporting a new sensor array dish. Shortly before the Pas-de-Calais is scheduled to depart, you each meet privately with Lt. Commander Shasss’thik of Starbase Command to be relieved of your temporary duties. You are each told through the Kaferian’s monotone universal translator that you performed “adequately” and that a favorable report will be given to your Cadet Cruise commanding officer. Cadet Weathers looks troubled when leaving her interview. It seems she didn’t receive the same news.

Your time at Starbase 11 ends with your group standing in a cargo bay waiting to beam aboard the Pas-de-Calais. Your luggage has preceded you onboard and you pass the intervening time in idle conversation or awkward silence.
I’m moving quickly through some interactions again. Feel free to extend or add to any of these conversations, or start a new one as you wait. We will leave this thread open, but will be starting the next thread shortly!
