PRE-ACADEMY DEVELOPMENT

Your Star Fleet career begins at the age of 18 with your background skills. These represent your personal interests and education prior to entering Star Fleet Academy. Divide your character’s INT score by 10 and round down for the number of skills that can be increased. A skill may be chosen twice to reflect a deep interest and advanced training. Half must be chosen from the educational background skills and the other half from the personal development skills. For skills marked with an *, which require more specific designations, choose the designation as well. Each skill chosen receives a skill rating of 7.

STAR FLEET ACADEMY

Your character enters the Academy at the age of 18. The academic studies at Star Fleet Academy are broken into five groups. First is the Core Curriculum or general studies. Second is the Space Science Curriculum, which lets your character leave the academy with a degree in Space Sciences. Third are the skills required of Star Fleet Officers, called Officer Training. Fourth is outside electives or the extra-curricular interests you pursue during your Academy years. Finally, you have the higher level courses you pursue in Advanced Study.

That is the number of skill advancements the character can allocate to any skill that already has a number value on the character sheet. Skills may be chosen more than once to improve them even further. Each allocated advancement is 7 points.

After graduating from Star Fleet Academy at the age of 22, your character chooses a service branch school to attend. The character’s future career will be determined by this choice. Like the Academy, branch school will have a core curriculum, outside electives, and advanced study. Communication/Damage Control, Helm, Navigation, and Security branch schools take one and one-half years. Engineers, who have more skills to learn, take two and one-half years at their branch school. Medical and Science officers take three and one-half years, studying for the equivalent of an advanced degree in their field of study. Medical Officers graduate with an M.D. degree. CADET CRUISE

Upon completing Branch School, the Cadet is sent on a 6-month cruise aboard a Starship, where his or her performance is evaluated. During the cruise, the officer-in-training carries the rank of Midshipman. It is a mark of special achievement to be passed and promoted to Ensign after only one Cadet Cruise. Sometimes Cadets will not have sufficiently demonstrated themselves in a single cruise and will be required to take a second or possibly third 6-month cruise.

Of course, the choicest Cadet Cruise ship assignments are in Galaxy Exploration Command, especially aboard the new-fangled Constitution-Class heavy cruisers. Military Operations Command assignments are also desirable. Colonial Operations Command, and Merchant Marine Command are the least desirable assignments for most Cadets. Our adventure will begin on your Cadet Cruise.
