Chapter 5A: A Padawan's Legacy

After Order 66, few Jedi dare to venture outside the shadows—rumors of the dark and terrible Darth Vader haunting even their waking moments. Yet, some Jedi find this life of fear unbearable. The Empire is always watching, and Vader himself is eager to confront any Jedi that might bring him closer to the whereabouts of his betrayer, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

"Ah, very keen. I feel your senses are aligning with our goals. You will receive your weapon after you pass the first trial. This should be easy for someone as skilled as you. With your experience in the war, you should get them back very shortly." The Grand Inquisitor states.

Chantique looks at the Grand Inquisitor and then back to Uri. "I'll take him downstairs." She says as she grasps his shoulder and turns him towards the stairwell heading down.

"Just remember, you need to kill them before you can leave. A few months ago, some refused to kill and everyone inside starved to death after several weeks. If they kill you, then they regain their freedom. This is to test your resolve and resourcefulness. If you can kill without your weapon, then you earn the opportunity to carry it." She says as they approach the maglock door leading to the sparring area.

From a few steps from the doorway, Uri can see an observation deck where the Grand Inquisitor and a few others have taken their positions to watch the event.

Uri gulps at the sight of the observation deck. His obstinance flags again, as the rules of a deathmatch are explained to him - nay, execution. Aware of Chantique's habit of running off to cut a moment short, he reaches out and takes hold of her wrist, searching for a nobler reason to cooperate, beyond what was given.

"Who are they? What have they done?"

Presence to convince her if necessary, albeit at low odds.
Vigilance vs her answer, to sense a false story, or notice half-truths.

Is the "sparring area" well-lit?

It's enough lit to spar, there's no spot lights there, just normal lighting.
Sorry, should have posted sooner.
"I... I don't know. Sometimes slavers. Other times murderers. It's different each time, but they are all scum eager for their freedom." She responds as she shrugs unknowingly.

Uri lets go. "Okay." After an awkward pause, he nods. "Uh, thank you." He's unsure of where to go from here, and simply feels compelled to go along and step into the room, out of an unbidden obligation to not let Chantique down, and cluelessness. Suppose he made a break right now: where would he go? It's not like him to run from a battle, anyway.

Chantique watches as Uri enters the room. Once he is within the area, the door closes behind him. Looking back, he watches as Chantique ascends the stairs to join the Grand Inquisitor and other onlookers overseeing the event.

A few moments later, a door on the other side of the room opens and an Zygerrian walk out. The Zygerrians were a humanoid feline species from Zygerria. They built a powerful empire by capturing and selling slaves until it was outlawed. During the Clone Wars, the Zygerrians attempted to openly revive their slave trade when they allied with the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

Glancing back at the onlookers, Uri watches as the Grand Inquisitor tosses an item towards the Zygerrian and then another item towards himself. At his feet lay Jedi Master Caitken's lightsaber.

Looking across the room, he watches as the Zygerrian picks up a shock whip which can be used to ensnare and immobilize a target. The Zygerrian powers on the the whip and begins to size up Uri to get a feel for his opponent.
We'll roll for start combat after your response (unless something happens).

Confused at first, longing for the saber to be his again, Uri goes to pick it up, but his gut tells him that this is a herring. He won't be allowed to keep it. Instead, he tucks it away and then looks at the Zygerrian, and inwardly groans. Uri had been hoping to let his enemy make the first move. A bad idea in a fight with an enemy armed with a whip, which requires distance. And no doubt it had to be a whip out of the gray man's penchant for irony. The cat's crime must have been slavery.

Without uttering a word, the Padawan abandons ceremony and prepares to charge.
Let's roll, and on my first turn, I'm planning to "charge" into a grapple.

init
Uri = yy = 3 success
Zyg = gg = 1 success

init order Uri, Zyg

Map - You are "short" distance away. So you need to move up into Melee range if you want to melee attack.

Note - the whip can reach you at short range. Let's just say 'near short' range, it's a couple meters long, so they don't need to be in "melee" range for an attack.

Uri rushes his foe and aims a closed fist for the eyes, hoping to blind him.
Move, Aim and attack.

First, I want to spend Advantage results on impairing his ability to fight while at Melee range. If there are any left, I want to further penalize him by impairing his vision. In that order.

So my idea is to force him to move away if he doesn't want a penalty, which will possibly provoke an attack for his trouble.

...

And Uri is fast. Remarkably, too fast. He manages to get in close and jab the cat in the eyes, distracting him with pain impairing his vision, before following through with a wide hook. He hastily plants his feet and winds up a harsh blow that sends his enemy to the floor. The Zygerrian didn't even seem to be ready for the Padawan. Uri can intuit the eyes gazing down on him without looking. The sleight, yet dense shape of the lightsaber hilt beneath his clothes begs to remain with him, always, and calls out to the azure and golden blades he left behind on Polis Massa.

But, Uri doesn't bend down to do anything more to this man, scum though he may be. Especially because of what it would mean to the Grand Inquisitor. The Padawan turns and looks up at the glass window, searching for the Grand Inquisitor, and he shakes his head "no".
_
In his head, Uri is making a gamble: the Grand Inquisitor doesn't want to kill him. Chantique betrayed that knowledge to him in their introduction. He *could* just walk over to the door and try to cut it with his laser sword, but he's got an attitude and all that. And even if his gamble doesn't pay off, he's still got a few days to try and get out before he, well, becomes emaciated to the point of self-preservation taking over.

Crossing my fingers.
