If we don't go to the Big Top Extravaganza, do we risk missing anything important other than the show itself? Shiloh is really more interested in solving the mystery--and finding her home again--than in being entertained.

It's your chance to steal the Witchlight Watch, if you want to go that route. Otherwise there's no punishment or anything for not going. It's your choice on what Events you wish to attend. You do know that near the end of the act that they open the floor to the audience to try out their hand at entertaining the crowd. So if anyone wanted to Perform, you could. But not required.

I assumed that it was a part that would progress with a reveal relevant to our mystery that we didn't want to miss.

I did forget about birds being able to "talk". Some of the funniest videos on the internet with birds doing just that. Let's say it was Quill's curiosity about how "human" birds are different from normal birds.

Q on Singing Lessons: There are a number of opportunities to gain later benefits in the Campaign, because of actions taken in the Carnival. I mark those down in a story tracker, and when the event comes up, you get bonuses such as rolls at Advantage, plot clues, etc. So the Singing Lessons are one of those, that will come in handy later.
