MYZ: The Zone

How did the world end? Some Stalkers and other braggarts say they know what happened. That a great plague swept the world and killed everyone. That the bosses of the Old Age fired their weapons of mass destruction at each other and drowned the world in flames. That the gods among the stars, the Ancients’ overlords, had enough of mankind’s hubris and decided to end it all in fire and brimstone. Maybe it’s true, maybe it’s just lies and tall tales. The truth is, no one knows for sure. Except maybe the Elder. And he refuses to talk about it. We learned as children not to ask, he would curse and rave at us every time the subject came up. But I’ve heard him mumble in his sleep. He said that the Ancients ended themselves.

Danny's senses pick up the tell-tale signs of the lingering miasma of the Rot, though it isn't too intense that it poses an immedate danger, but he knows if they linger here for too long it will nevertheless start to affect their bodies.

Danny checks the corrosion on the exposed metal, digs into bare soil, and examines any pools of moisture that might have gathered in dark corners. He seems to go through a mental checklist as he scrapes away flakes of rust, sniffs the unpleasant water, and runs the dirt through his fingers.

"Alright, we shouldn't move everyone here, but if I had to camp for the night I wouldn't panic. The Rot is definitely present, but if we don't linger you shouldn't get sick. I've been in worse places when out scouting. It'll be safe to search thoroughly."

"Then let us have at it." Mart gets right to work, picking at the shelves. He's not too bright though, and follows the others around. Maybe they'll come across something that needs a heft or a strong shove.
Scouted. No successes.

"With a little bit of rest, I could get to looking for things to snag. Maybe even build a cart of some sort to haul stuff," Kwine says, weary with exhaustion. "It would be good for us to recover some of our strength. Whatever is in this place has been here for years. It won't be gone in the next moment."

"Rest if you want, but I'm going to look for what we came for." Arkod grunts, before turning from the rest of the group and stomping off towards to the counter by the entrance, paying little or no attention to the debris littering the floor, glass crunching underfoot.

Danny is feeling in his element searching through the ruins. This is what he's usually doing solo, and it feels good to have companions with him doing the same thing. It adds a layer of safety and comfort, having someone there to back him up and watch his back.

While the others debate their next move and Arkod seems intent on doing whatever he wants, Danny combs the area around the entrance.

Among a rack of water damaged books and magazines, he finds a Lifestyle Magazine, a stained pink Princess Dress (in a size far too small for a grown woman) and what appears to be a paperback book of some kind.

Lifestyle Magazine

On the front cover and everywhere inside the magazine, there are pictures of the Old Ones. They all smile and look healthy and happy. Their homes are bright and beautiful, their motor carriages shine in the sunlight. Between the pictures, texts describe what life was like in the Old Age. It must have been heaven.

Danny brings his findings back to the group, showing off the Magazine that will surely be of interest to the Ark's scholars. The dress might make a nice gift to a child, and he hasn't had time yet to read through the paperback to see what it's about. Regardless, not exactly the pile of preserved food they might have hoped for.

Mart ogles the magazine. "I see no arms fit for a warrior. I see horses made of steel, but also wooden houses." He goes back and forth between amazement and deflated boredom. "Were these the common folk, or the very rich?"

Danny looks at the pictures with Mart. "Um, good question. Maybe they were so rich they didn't need to have muscles? Maybe they had slaves or something that lived in the wood houses, and they lived in better ones somewhere? Strange."
