This might sound a bit random, but I've noticed people referring to Slaves, I'm guessing this is the Grunt role?

In the pdf, the role is named as "Slave".

That's really strange, I'm working from the same pdf and (on page 40) it's showing as Grunt for me..

So, some quick number crunching:

According to the book, it takes 4 hours to explore a sector, and 1 hour to explore a sector. So theoretically, exploring these two spots and returning is a 10-hour round trip. Jury-rigging something takes "a few hours" which may or may not be feasible depending on the Rot level. I could trade some grub for a tool set, which would give me a slight bonus to Jury Rig. However, my character also only has 3 bullets, so I'm loathe to trade them. I'm hoping to maybe find enough scrap to make things for resale and outfit our crew so that subsequent forays into the Zone are a little more robust. Any thoughts?

Well I have 6 rations of water all to myself and that feels like more than I should know what to do with. Water is probably valued like gold. Could I help out by giving Kwine some water to barter with?
