TOR2: T'was the Eve of Midsummer

It is the year 2965 of the Third Age and the Shadow is returning. Twenty-four years ago, an alliance of Elves, Men, and Dwarves defeated a horde of Orcs and Wild Wolves, under a sky darkened by Giant Bats, inaugurating a new era of prosperity for the Free Peoples. But two decades is a long time for peace to last, and in many dark corners of the earth a shadow is lengthening once again.

Rumours of strange things happening outside the borders of civilised lands are spreading with increasing regularity and, while they are dismissed by most as fireside-tales and children’s stories, they sometimes reach the ears of individuals who recognise the sinister truth they hide.

These are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers and, when they prevail, they hail them as heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names.

Ragnarr, looks at the other contestants. He has done well, but some of the other contestants are moving ahead of him. The pipeweed has worked well, and the Barding decides he's going to push his luck and go for a more complex trick before he falls behind the two hobbits.
Ragnarr will invoke Bold to try and perform a more complicated trick.

Targon cheers on Periwinkle, complimenting her artistry and robust smoke rings. While he has no personal animus, since she has decided to have a rivalry with Adelard, he carries that competitiveness for her as well. He is neither crass not cruel, but he playfully boos the Took's efforts, decrying them as not as impressive as the little lady's creations.
Not competing, just cheering others on. :)

Periwinkle grins and waves discreetly at the tall ranger. Then she moves over to where Ragnarr stands, and compliments him enthusiastically on his well-performed smoke rings.
Uses Merry to cheer Ragnar on, giving him +1 on his next roll, if possible.

Hugh is surprised by his decent showing in the first round of the smoking contest. He hums to himself as he reloads his pipe. Determined to do even better in the second round. He knows he is up against some stiff competition, but will give it his all, just the same.
Please spend hope

The second round of the competition sees several impressive rings floating over the Green, including Ragnarr’s depiction of different breads and baked goods, but standing out among them are the wondrous image of the slopes of the Blue Mountains and Hugh’s depiction of Bree hill! Fargrim’s smoke rings seem to stretch for miles with the foothills of his homelands giving way to the snow-capped peaks of the great mountains, clouds breaking upon the highest of peaks. Hugh’s effort showed the hill on which Bree was built, the four villages and if one looked close enough they could probably make out the Prancing Pony itself!

The gathered audience claps and 'ooh's and 'ah's for the competitors, even Aldred looks impressed with the two outstanding rings.

Ragnarr notices that the pipeweed seems to have an unusual, almost sticky, sickly sweetness to it. While it appears to make impressive smoke rings, it leaves behind an aftertaste and a foggy feeling behind Ragnarr’s eyes.

Ragnarr takes 3 Endurance loss in this Second round of the competition.

Vidar is impressed by both Fargrim and Hugh's smoke rings. It was really quite remarkable what a skilled performer could do with smoke rings.

Periwinkle joins the audience in both oohs, aahs and fervent applause when she sees the marvellous creations brought forth. Especially the blue mountains with its cloud shrouded peaks makes her heart sing and her eyes twinkle with hidden longing for adventure in strange and wondrous faraway lands.

Then she notices Ragnarr's unease and gives him a worried look.
"Ragnarr? Are you feeling unwell?"

Hugh beams with pride at his success although he has to admit the dwarf's mountains are quite amazing. This competition is going better than Hugh ever expected it to.

Ah, that's much better, Fargrim thinks to himself. What could be better than the majestic bones of the earth and the halls of his people? A suppressed thought resurfaces, and he gets a little misty-eyed, but nonetheless prepares to fill his cheeks with another draught of pipe smoke for the third round. Too distracted by the momentum of the competition to notice something's amiss.

"I think there's something in this pipeweed that doesn't agree with me," the Barding says to his concerned friend. "I think I'll quit while my behind. No need getting sick and having people call into question my wife's cooking by mistake." With that, Ragnarr extinguishes his pipe and indicates that he is out of the competition.
