TOR2: T'was the Eve of Midsummer

It is the year 2965 of the Third Age and the Shadow is returning. Twenty-four years ago, an alliance of Elves, Men, and Dwarves defeated a horde of Orcs and Wild Wolves, under a sky darkened by Giant Bats, inaugurating a new era of prosperity for the Free Peoples. But two decades is a long time for peace to last, and in many dark corners of the earth a shadow is lengthening once again.

Rumours of strange things happening outside the borders of civilised lands are spreading with increasing regularity and, while they are dismissed by most as fireside-tales and children’s stories, they sometimes reach the ears of individuals who recognise the sinister truth they hide.

These are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers and, when they prevail, they hail them as heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names.

Ragnarr smiles. "You're practically tight-lipped compared to some of the people who visit Hild's bakery, Periwinkle. And unlike them, you don't have a mean bone in you." The Barding takes a look at his soon-to-be traveling companions. A motley group, to be sure, but they all seemed like decent folk. "I'll take the ale, but if I don't return home for a meal with my wife, especially before heading out on a journey, I'm like as not to be sleeping in the stables for the rest of my days."

The rest of the evening passes by without much of note, save for the Pony filling up with folks setting off for home in the morning. Gossip is centred around the events of the Smoke Ring Contest and the competitors are offered many a free ale in exchange for their views on what might have caused the sickness that debilitated several of the contestants in this years tournament.

Pipeweed smoke fills the taproom along with the smell of ale, food and unkempt travellers and serving folk weave their way through the tables with flagons of ale and plates of steaming food.

The evening wears on and soon the sun starts to meet the horizon, casting longer, darker shadows across the Green and the surrounding countryside.

Whoever isn't staying at the inn needs to head home before it's too dark to travel safely. You can either post something, or if you prefer we can skip to morning (let me know in the OOC channel.)

After waving goodbye to Ragnarr and a promise to meet in the morning, Periwinkle spends the evening eating, drinking, smoking, laughing, and chit-chatting with her new companions. But as the clientele of the prancing pony wears thinner and the moon rises higher in the summer night sky, she bids her new friends goodnight and makes her way to the stable loft and the awaiting piles of hay, where she falls into a deep and comfortable slumber.

The evening turns into full night, with the taproom slowly emptying of patrons as they retire for the night, some with long journeys back home ahead of them. Eventually, Barnabas chases off any stragglers and the Midsummer's Eve passes into Midsummers Day.
