TOR2: Onwards to Combe

It is the year 2965 of the Third Age and the Shadow is returning. Twenty-four years ago, an alliance of Elves, Men, and Dwarves defeated a horde of Orcs and Wild Wolves, under a sky darkened by Giant Bats, inaugurating a new era of prosperity for the Free Peoples. But two decades is a long time for peace to last, and in many dark corners of the earth a shadow is lengthening once again.

Rumours of strange things happening outside the borders of civilised lands are spreading with increasing regularity and, while they are dismissed by most as fireside-tales and children’s stories, they sometimes reach the ears of individuals who recognise the sinister truth they hide.

These are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers and, when they prevail, they hail them as heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names.

Once again, the sound and smell of the Pony's kitchen rouse the patrons of the inn around sunrise. Barnabas and his staff are up early making sure the folk of the inn are well catered for and have little wait for their breakfasts.

The taproom is sparsely populated at this time, with many of the patrons having overindulged yesterday evening.

Periwinkle is up early, leaning against the wall of the Pony and chewing a straw, while waiting for the others to show up. With her pack prepared and water-skin filled from the nearby well, she is ready to leave as soon as the others are.

Vidar also rises early, as he does practically every day, unless he is suffering from exhaustion after a long journey. Both the trader and the diplomat who get a head start on the day are likely to get ahead of any rivals. He orders a large breakfast of eggs, bacon and hotcakes.

The Ranger enjoyed a drink or two the previous evening, it is true. But never allows himself to drink to excess, and so is clear and focused in the morning as everyone meets at the Inn prior to heading out. He either isn't hungry yet, or ate from his personal rations, as he doesn't order any breakfast for himself. He does look freshly scrubbed and washed, a little water still dripping off his wet hair.

He heads over to the wall that Periwinkle is currently holding up, and nods with a friendly smile. "Morning! Eager to be out and about as well?"

"Mornin' mister Targon!" Periwinkle says and smiles back. She does not look freshly scrubbed or washed.
"Yes, the sooner the better. Looks like there are some bad weather coming up today if I'm not misstaken."
She nods towards the clouds amassing over Bree hill.
"Or what do you think?"

"I think the village of Combe's luck is about to change for the better," Ragnarr said, tying his horse Snowfall to the post. He was dressed for dangerous travel, armed and armored with his great shield stowed over his shoulder. The only thing out of place was a small basket. "Hild made blackberry tort cookies," Ragnarr said opening one side of the lid to offer the neat, square pastries to the others, starting with Periwinkle.

Periwinkle squeals and starts wiping her somewhat grubby hands on her somewhat grubby apron, before carefully picking a pastry from Ragnarrs basket. She eats it with visible enjoyment and hunger.
“Ulfhild is the best!” She mumbles through the munching, “oh, and good morning, Ragnarr!”

"Why, thank you," says Vidar in response to pastries Ragnarr offers. He eats his and says, "A pleasant way to start off a trip to deal with something not so pleasant."

The smell of breakfast rouses Fargrim from his bed as usual. He fills up on sausage, jumbled eggs and a mug of ale, and takes a few scones to go.

He joins Vidar and takes a cookie from the basket. "Indeed, young master. My thanks, er... Targon, yes." he nods to the ranger. "Ragnarr. And where is the other Ranger?"

“Good morning, master Fargrim, master Vidal.”
Periwinkle nods respectfully to the dwarves in turn, then she looks around.
“We’re waiting for mister Hugh, then we’re ready to be on our way. I’m pretty sure I saw him just now.”
