Counterspell!

This forum contains those "neverending stories" where one person writes a bit of a story and then another person picks it up where the previous left off. Should make for some interesting reading.

Counterspell!

Post by Deadman » Wed Mar 05, 2008 2:07 am

Welcome to the Grand Magus duel, held annually in the Colosseum of Lights, in the heart of the capitol city of Praxer, seat of power of the Iberian Empire! Don't worry about the spectators, powerful wards keep them safe in their seats from any of the magicks performed in the ring. Which of the many gathered magicians will win the free-for-all battle royale and claim the one million gold lion purse?

Remember, you're a magician so you can do anything. But you can also do nothing since your opponents always have a spell in response. This game has no end.
Maladictian of the Red Beard bows to the crowd, then falls right into gesturing wildly and shouting the words of power of a fearsome summoning charm: "Se'Crit Avda Uze! L'Nardo Miklanjo Donetallo Raf'Ael!"

An immense war-turtle the size of three elephants manifests in a puff of lime smoke. From it's sharp snapping beak it roars an ear-piercing battle cry!

Are there any magicians powerful enough to oppose such a mighty enchantment?
There are only three rules to this game. You can't specify the result of a spell targeting another wizard or creature. For instance you can say "I shoot a fireball at that guy" but it's up to this guy whether they block, teleport, turn the fireball into ice, etc. Likewise if I order that turtle to attack, I can say attack X but it's that wizards prerogative how to respond.

Only one spell per post and take turns in posting. If you have several spells attacking you at once, or you need to do multiple things, think of a single casting that will deal with everything at once (for example creating a stone wall to block several projectiles, or turning yourself into a choking mist to avoid harm from phantom arrows and attack at the same time.

#3 Don't leave the ring.

Crepeticia the flighty enters the ring, and without hesitation cries out "Clattu, Verata, Necktie", known to many as the curse that causes immediate profuse turtle diarrhea.

Magnus, the Blue Mage, enters the ring and with a wave of his hands causes some small stones lying around the ring to rise up in the air. While the others are distracted with the giant turtle, he makes a casual gesture and the stones rocket off with the speed of sling stones, aimed at the two defenseless mages.

"All too easy," he mutters.

Maladictian mutters a curse upon hearing the Chelonian Bowel Charm. He's seen it before and it's not pleasant. Still, this can be turned to his advantage...

"Upsy daisy!" the wizard commands his summoned pet and it leaps into the air and lands in a new position between him and Magnus. The stones heading his way bounce harmlessly off its thick shell.

More notably, the turtle's backside is now pointed directly at Crepeticia, and the ominous rumblings indicate a world of unpleasantness may soon be launched at the spell slinger.

Olipad the wanderer steps into the arena.
"This will be fun."
He waves his hands and sends a swarm of beetles to swarm Magnus.

Grubitus Maximus shimmers into being in the middle of the arena. As he comes into being he summons up a giant concave shield right infront of Crepeticia the Flighty. The sheild is angled just so that the stones flying at her from Magnus the Blue Mage are scooped up and deflected at the anus of the gastormically distressed giant turtle. "Plugus Upus Bowelcus!" That should put a cork on that!, he thinks to himself.

Grubitus glances at the female wizard, winks.

"Magnus is not impressed," the self-proclaimed Blue Mage says in a stentorian tone as the beetles fly towards him. He raises his hand and speaks a single word of power. Instantly the swarm of beetles all turn into gray butterflies. As the butterflies continue forward, it quickly becomes clear that they are actually made of smoke. Each of the tiny creatures continues to beat its wings in an effort to get to Magnus. But with each flap, more and more dissipates into trailing wisps. By the time they reach Magnus, they are nothing more than a small puff of smoke.

The turtle cries in alarm as stones speed towards one of its few vulnerable areas. What few combatants are fluent in reptile understand it to mean "Not a compounding of the unhappiness!"

Maladictian stamps his foot, enacting a mighty tunneling spell that pulls the turtle underground and out of harm's way. As the beast moves through a steep furrow on the arena floor there is a terrifying sound of gastric distress, thankfully contained deep beneath the sand.

When the monster bursts out of the ground next to Grubitus, the look on its face as the sharp beak swoops downward in attack is more sheepish than menacing.

Into the ring comes a once well respected mage. Unfortunately everyone recognizes him as the Nameless one. Now, in most self respecting mage circles such a title would be impressive, unfortunately this mage sold his name to an entrepreneur for 47 cents worth of bus fair. The Great Gregorus Cola has since seen record sales.

The Nameless one glances around the ring and then points up into the air at the sun. At first it seems nothing is happening until a meteor begins to plummet from the sky, directly towards Olipad.

Crepeticia winks back at Grubitus, thanking her lucky stars that her savior for the moment didn't recall her stealing his favorite enchantment (The Truffle Shuffle), and choose to allow her to become doused in runny turtle excrement.
"Chitty chitty bang bang" she utters, powerful words that are capable of transforming the malevolent turtle into a happy green roadster.
The sky darkens with the approach of the meteor.
