Chapter 6 - Burning the Midnight Oil

Eberron is a new world described as Pulp Noir where swashbuckling and intrigue run rampant. The Last War is over, the war to end all wars, but many say the fighting has simply shifted from the battlefield to the shadows. Starting during the final years of The Last War, this Eberron game turned back the official clock to a time of warring nations on the verge of disaster. Now with the Last War over the memories and shadows of it linger on.

Chapter 6 - Burning the Midnight Oil

Post by Vardaen » Tue Nov 11, 2008 1:07 am

Someplace on Khorvaire

For time uncounted the aged magician has worked and lived in his private study isolated from the rest of Eberron. The old man Aughsamver Alemormortankel sits at his workbench, books open, pens in hand, and scrolls scattered about. He has been working on his research for so long now he has forgotten how long, but he must unlock the arcane secrets he seeks.

So he works, and works more, hopeful he might make that breakthrough...

The chamber is simple, a small bed and table, a work bench for alchemical testing, and several shelves full of all manner of books, and seated on a stool is Aughsamver Alemormortankel pouring over his tombs...
This is a solo intro thread for Cohobin. Welcome to the game!

Focusing deeply into 'œAncient History', he mumbles to himself '˜Yes, Yes'¦ I've heard of this before somewhere' '¦ his words tapering off into thoughts, pulling and twisting some stubble on his right cheek. 'œWhere have I heard that '¦ ah Yes, I remember now' '€" Aughsamver pulls his left hand away from his book and quickly contorts it in a series of gestures, leading up to a gripping gesture, a pull, and a half-handed attempt to grasp and rotate his hand. Simultaneously, a book is pull from one of his bookshelves, levitates across the room and sets down in front of his current book, opened about halfway through the book.

'œHmmm' he mutters to himself, 'œI knew I heard it before'; but before he can do anything further his eyes look up, suddenly realizing that he has to relieve himself. Another few contortions of his right hand and another grasping gesture brings a bedpan to him, allowing him to relieve himself. After finishing, he intricately interweaves both of his hands '€" making the bedpan disappear and re-appear moments later, empty, next to his bed. 'œThere's a better way to do this too,' he says to himself.

Without waiting another moment he turns on his stool, making more hand gestures, pulling a few books from the shelves, as well as a leather bound book with the markings '˜AA' imprinted in thick capital letters diagonally across the front in glittering green ink. These books land open on top of his other books at his desk. Quickly mumbling to himself, 'œMagical Devices, Creating A Magical Device and Spellcrafting' as if he is checking off a mental list in his head. 'œOh' he exclaims as another thought entered his head. Moving down to the right side of the desk, he opens a drawer and pulls a fine case out engraved with writing on all sides; carefully opening it to reveal a plain looking quill; acting as though he didn't trust himself enough to handle this item with magic. Another few hand movements later, and another leather-bound book appears, this one obviously being a personal journal of his. He says a word under his breath, and the quill springs to life, floating up and to the journal, as if ready to write.

He quickly starts to dictate: 'œDay 913: Creating A Prestidigitation Amulet', in which the quill writes his words in neat, black, cursive ink. Flipping through his spellbook, he reads through his spells, the quill writing down notes in the journal as well. Some notes include 'œMajor Creation, Prestidigitation, Dancing Lights, Mending, Open/Close, Arcane Mark, Light, Summon Mug and Read Magic; among others'. Getting up from his desk, he moves to his work bench, clearing a spot for his new work by just forcing everything currently on it to the side. 'œYes, Yes, I should create the amulet, engrave it, imbue it with magic then make it permanent... that should make all this easier... hmm... and I should be able to control it with thoughts...." halfway through he stopped talking and when into thought, though all of the steps are neatly recorded in his Journal as a numbered list. 'œNow, just to figure out what it should look like' he mutters as he absently thinks, pulling his chin hair again; his quill eagerly anticipating it's next task...
I just assumed a year was 365 days in the game, He's been around for about 2.5 years.

The ring I want to create will have a permanent prestidigitation, Summon Mug, Dancing Lights, Light, Arcane Mark, Open/Close and mending imbued in it - all 0th level spells that he uses on a day to day basis.

Planning on using Major Creation to Create the metal amulet necessary to start, as I don't have blanks available.

Alot of this detail was handled during Char Gen and on Chat. For the curious the Amulet is

Aughsmver's Amulet (of Laziness) '€" This amulet was crafted by Aughsmver himself during his years after the Last War. He was prone to needing alot of cantrips for his daily use so he wouldn't have to leave his desk and so he crafted this amulet to do those things for him.
'¢ Once Per Day the User Can Cast the Following Spells at 1st Level
'¢ Arcane Mark
'¢ Dancing Lights
'¢ Light
'¢ Mending
'¢ Open/Close
'¢ Summon Mug
The old wizard makes liberal use of Mage Hand to gather books, and bed pans, that he needs. The old man is not too fond of getting up from his chair and desk if he doesn't need to once he's in the middle of something. Calling a few books to him he sets his autoquill to writing as he dictates his notes. At some point he changes his mind from a ring to an amulet, and considers the next stage of causing the amulet to form via his magical powers...

Scratching his head, he thinks for a moment, using his hands as if though he were designing something using his hands as a template and his mind to fill in the details, as he works into the night, a final shape finally takes place in his mind. Almost as if to say something, but then at the last second deciding not to, he makes a small nod to himself as though he is satisfied. He leaves the workbench, returning to his desk to pull out and open a few of his many bottles of different inks.

Very quickly the pen jumps into action, sketching out a disk in 3/4 view, with a fine chain attached to it. The pen starts filling in the disk initially with the letters 'AA' in bold, capital letters on a diagonal in green ink, with writing in the background complementing the letters in metallic blue ink. The backside of the amulet is then drawn, which includes more metallic blue text against the metal background.
upon closer inspection, anyone that can read magic should be able to determine that the background text is excerpts from the spells imbued into the amulet
He looks closely at his handy work, making a few touch-ups and from the look on his face, can tell he is pleased with his handiwork.

He turns to an empty spot in his room, and starts into an intricate hand movement, ending on a hand gesture that looks like he is opening a closet and finishing with an arcane word. A Hanger rack appears with a single set of clothes on it - an Artisans outfit with a leather apron covering the front of the body, tying in the back. He quickly removes his clothes, throws them on his bed, and changes into this outfit; making a final movement as though he is closing a closet door -- making the rack disappear. "That'll do me much better" Aughsamver says, turning his attention now to the empty table in front of him.

He moves the green and metallic blue inks onto the work table, being sure to cover them so they don't go dry. He pulls another book out, this one leather bound and having 'AA' imprinted in thick capital letters diagonally across the front in glittering metallic blue ink. "Must make preparations, must make ... " he says as he drifts off into thought, reading through his spellbooks for some additional spells he may need.

The quill returns to his journal, writing in black ink 'Additionally Required: ' with the pen writing down Fabricate, Arcane Mark, Shrink Item, Permanency; adding another section below that: 'Possibly Needed: Mnemonic Enhancer'
Going to use the some of the green and metallic blue ink in the creation of the amulet, which upon closer inspection reveals that the text in the background is excerpts of the spells contained in the amulet.

Using major creation / fabricate to create the amulet and the chain, Arcane Mark to make my 'AA' mark and the writing on both sides (embedding the ink), and finally shrink item to make the amulet about 1/2" in diameter, with a fine chain; then imbuing with the spells, and finally casting permanency to make the changes permanent.
He continues to flip through the books for anything additional he may need. As well as the order in which he should start fabricating, noting to himself that he'll start later, in order to prep the spells he needs.

Keep in mind that while we are doing alot of the flavor, that some things do need to be actually on your sheet to make this work. I'm not sure where the magic clothest came from, for example.

Technically you can't cast Permancy on Major Creatio or Fabricate, but since this is all based on char gen, letting it fly. After this, we will have to use the strick rules from the book.
The old wizard continues to work on his amulet, drawing it out in detail, and then using his magical abilties to form the image into an actual amulet that he can hold on to. Unforunately for Aughsamver he is no sculpter, and while his drawing is nicely done, his ability to turn the image into an item is not as good as it should be. The amulet forms of gold from a small piece he has, but it becomes all lumpy and disfigured. The amulet is lopsided, and looks sort of half melted, like a thrird grader was working with clay. The writing is smugged, but readable, and the amulet is very very ugly to look at!
Craft: Sculpter: 11 vs 15 Failure! Its crafted, but UGLY!

"Hmmm.... not quite what I expected... but meh." he says as he sets the chain around his neck, "As long as it works", he takes off his leather work clothing and gets changed into his normal set of clothes. He quickly goes through each of the abilities that he imbued in his amulet, testing to make sure everything is working properly - using creation scraps and such.
Tests all of the spells for the amulet for that day
"... seems like everything worked alright" as he finishes the last test of his amulet, "this will do" Aughsamver says as he turns to his bed, exhausted from the days work of crafting, passing out almost the moment he lays on his bed.

He mutters something about the fabrication space/time, the wars and houses as he drifts off to sleep for the night... he last words before passing out are "... soon ..." then he falls into a deep, snoring slumber.

The amulet works, the various cantrips on the amulet seem just fine, and will make his life a bit simpler later on. He changes clothing and then passes out on his bed. He slumbers for a long while eventually waking up and looking around the room, and then falling back to sleep.
He Cohobin, we never did your Familiar! Maybe now is a good time to summon it.

Aughsamver wakes up the next morning, and seeing all of the scrap material lying around he gives a slight sigh. He looks to be concentrating for a second or two, then a great metallic sheened scarab with aquamarine gems studded into its back appears. "There you go Bob, up on the desk there, take care of those scraps for me". There is a moment of silence in which there seems to be non-verbal communication, and the scarab takes off, taking the long way from Aughsamver's bed, up the wall, across the room, and finally dropping down on his table. The scarab starts to pickup and eat the metal scrap on the table.

Aughsamver makes a gripping hand motion and pulls a book off the shelves entitled 'Known Artifacts & Legends' and starts to read. "Bah, I know most of these books inside and out. If nothing is working, I wonder what the hell happened out there" he says as he looks to Bob, "Well, at least we've been lucky, in some sense of the term Bob". Aughsamver then buries himself inside his book, looking for the finer details and interactions of objects that he might have missed previously.
He is looking for artifacts that lay within or close to the area that he was at before

The wizened sage wakes and realizes the place is a mess from last night. He grabs a book off the shelf with a mage hand, and sends his familiar off to clean up the scraps of metal. Its true things could be worse, but boredom and routine are starting to drive the old man a bit batty.

Scanning through the book of legends and lore he settles in for another long day of doing nothing but reading and studing his magics.

Thoroughly bored today, the mage reclines on his bed, casting random cantrips on his hands, the bedposts and bob. Soon, the entire room is dancing in a symphony of multi-colored flames and lights. He picks up the beat from the lights, and starts to hum a tune... slowly lyrics form as he hums along.
