Taking Improved Natural Attack (unarmed strike) and Superior Unarmed Strike from the Book of Nine Swords nets you the unarmed strike damage of a Large monk of your level +4. A monk's belt boosts that to a Large monk of your level +8.
You can deliver some really potent beatdowns that way. If you've got a nice, permissive GM, play a warforged, get a battlefist, and get the Monk's Tattoo from Unapproachable East to get the damage of a Huge monk of your level +12.
A monk purpose-built for the purpose can even get the Giant's Stance of the Stone Dragon discipline by 20th level, pushing his effective size up to Gargantuan. From there, an item of Enlarge Person a few times a day is cheap, and can push damage up to ludicrous levels.

In terms of a non-monk, any of the martial-maneuver classes from the Book of Nine Swords make effective and flavorful unarmed fighters.
