Any interest in an ASOIAF game?

Post by Bohemond » Wed Jul 14, 2021 10:30 pm

Greetings!

I was just seeing if anyone would be interested in playing in a ASOIAF-themed game. The basic system would rely on the Green Ronin RPG system, with some home-brew rules to make the game a little smoother. I'm still in the early planning stages of the campaign, but I'm planning it to take place during the reign of the Targaryens (more Dunk and Egg, less GoT). I've always loved the setting, was a huge fan of TetNak's campaigns, and I felt the Green Ronin system handles certain aspects of RPGing a lot better than other systems. If you're interested, reply below. I'll answer questions in this thread or PMs as best as I can!

So, some updates on the campaign:

-The setting is going to be around 200 AC, after the First Blackfyre Rebellion. This allows us not be restricted by the GOT-era alliances and strictures, but also allows for the group to make plans without having to worry about a literal dragon dropping out of the sky and going Deus ex Machina on them.

-I plan on taking full advantage of potential of the game mechanics and the setting. This means more intrigues, battles and higher stakes. It also means less adventuring-style "let's go fight another group of bandits" style scenarios.

I'd be interested as well.

Idea spitballing of things that appeals to me without thinking too hard:
1. PC's house was on the loosing side of the war, but didn't suffer overly much for it, just is stuck with the wrong friends now.
2. PC's house were opportunistic bastards during the war, picked the right side and got rewarded for it (and made enemies of those who previously held the land so awarded).
3. PC's house were opportunistic bastards during the war, picked the wrong side but didn't get punished for it (and hated by all those who had hoped to gain some of it's lands as spoils).
4. PC's house were opportunistic bastards during the war, signed on with the Blackfyre's when that side seemed to be in ascension, but turned coats when their advancement on King's Landing was stalled for long enough for the forces of the Vale, Stormlands and Dorne to be brought in, hated by the Blackfyre sympathizers, distrusted by the rest.

General concerns with the system:
1. The idea of having houses and lands is great, it's execution? I haven't really succeeded at making a version I like better without adding in way too much complexity...but still don't like it much.
2. The system making combat/intrigue specialist steamroll anyone who isn't, it's fiendishly difficult to "dabble" in more than one skillset.
3. Rank 5 in any ability has a nasty tendency to just bullrush reasonable TN's, intrigue/combat defense or passive abilities it's tested against (ties in with the specialist steamrolling non-specialists).
4. Ability ranks costs way too little compared to Specialty ranks (the game is far too stingy with handing out the latter at start).
5. The Drawbacks pretty much all are in the category of "this I can take and it won't really affect my character much so free DP" or "If I take this, it massively cripples my character at something I want him to be good at". Personally in favor of custom drawbacks that gives the narrator hooks to mess with you, modeled on seven deadly sins (greed, wrath, lust etc) and the like basically.

Hey, quick update/feedback.

-Without going too much into detail, the group house is going to be extremely new (as in your characters are part of the founding event). So, any character ideas you are currently thinking about, you should assume their life up to this point has been with another house. My advice is to go through the existing houses in this time and pick one that appeals to you. awoiaf.westeros.org is a good starter resource.

-Again, is plan on taking advantage of the grand scale of this. One of the home-brews I'm probably going to implement is that PCs start at Status 3. You should consider being more concerned about aiming too low than too high. If you plan on playing the Lord or Lady, being a partial or full-blooded Targaryen is on the table. If your plan is to play Jimmy the woodcutter, I would advise:

-Please start sending me character ideas or questions. I know Zorbeltuss has some concerns about the mechanics which I'm cognizant of and looking to make less cumbersome, but I don't want to waste time developing home-brew fixes for things that no one cares about and won't come up during character creation or play.

Again, questions, concerns, and musings can be posted here or PMed to me as you prefer.
