Not So Basic Training: Shattered Hopes

+++Unimportant Transport Cruiser+++

In Atmosphere of Sepheris Secundus, Golenna Reach, Calixis System, Segmentum Obscurus, on the northern edge of the known galaxy.

It was clear from the tone of your master that you all were not the ideal candidates for this mission. Indeed, he seemed to hesitate as he gave you the rundown of the situation on Sepheris Secundus. There was a recent uprising that necessitated force to put down and so a platoon of Imperial Guard set down in the heart of the rebellion and silenced the mobs. Once the worst of the fighting had passed, they secured the area, which included an exploration of the Gorgonid Mine, where the fighting was the heaviest. The reports are murky, since a number of squads went missing in the dark, but suffice it to say, the Commissar sealed shut the mine and quarantined the entire region.

Under ordinary circumstances, the Inquisition would have looked into this matter at its own pace, but the damage to the world's economy and by extension the entire sector's economy could prove too severe if the problem was left unattended. Hence they sent you and your companions.

This is a bit unsettling since you are all raw recruits, bound for training at Scintilla, but you were the closest Acolytes and it was a small matter to divert your vessel to this harsh and frozen world.

The rumble of the lighter, the small transport ship that transplats you from the cruiser to the surface, is like standing inside a thundercloud. The rivets of the old ship shake and rattle against the friction of the descent approach. The bottom of the lighter is heated a bright red, and flames lick up the side of the ship, long ago the red paint that proudly adorned the ship was removed by so many similar landings. The drab metal-gray lighter holds a small crew of six, and one tech-pilot, a robotic automation that is attached directly to the lighter's control station. With little more room than to sit with arms and legs held tight you and the others race downwards through the rumble of the atmosphere. A small dataslate embedded in the wall of the lighter flickers a monocrome green and black screen. Quick enough, whether you like it or not, you will reach landfall...
+++PLANETARY DATA+++

GALACTIC POSITION: 52/34/CS/NNE.

CLASS: Mining World.

SUBSECTOR: Golgenna.

SATELLITES: Three moons, none inhabited.

POPULATION: 12,000,000,000.

PLANETARY GOVERNER: Queen Lachryma III.

ECONOMY: Chips or Lumps - In the mines and villages of Sepheris Secundus life revolves around endless mining, to the point where chips and lumps of ore are sometimes used as a default currency.

PRINCIPLE EXPORTS: Sepheris Secundus is the largest exporting planet in the Calixis Sector. Without its massive exports of ore, metals and fuel, the Trade of the Calixis Sector could not function.

Mirror Shield. Used by the Royal Scourges on Sepheris Secundus. The shield is a large rectangular shape that will cover about two thirds of a human sized body. The shield is made from layers of stained glass, a material used in large quantities by the barons of Sepheris Secundus, this gives the shield a mirrored effect that has been known to repel las-weapon shots of a low strength.

PRINCIPLE IMPORTS: Sepheris Secundus relies on imports of food from the sector's agri-worlds.

IMPERIAL GUARD RECRUITMENT: Its vast population makes it a potential supplier of Imperial Guard recruits, although a relatively small proportion of the population would be suitable because of universally poor health, along with the risk of exposing the subjugated masses to the possibility of life outside the mines.

CONTACT WITH OTHER WORLDS: Stable warp routes link Sephris Secundus to Scintilla, Iocanthus, Fedrid and Ganf Magna. Sephiris Secundus is one of the planets on the path of the Misericord.
Welcome to the Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy game! This is the first time I'm running this game and for many of you the first time you are playing it, so we will explore it together.

This is the Demo Adventure (plus my own alterations) called Shatter Hopes and it will help us ease into the system and the theme. Please take this opportunity to post your character's intro.

Ishmael is seated in the rickety ship, bouncing about as the transport descends to the surface of Sephiris Secundus. He has nothing of worth, really, his coveralls that he wore months ago is still what he is wearing today. His face is patched by white chemical burns, not so different, more than likely than the miners of this world. Ishmael knows he will see a similar sight when the transport touches down. He also knows their likelihood to succeed is close to nil. The man at least has his hand cannon. Though fitted across his fingers on his right hand is a set of brass knuckles, so he can lay a wallop on someone if needed with his fist. Tucked away in his old work boots is a simple knife. Ishmael feels his lack of training and equipment in his throat as they near a landing. He thinks to himself, "Was my life simply prolonged to be sacrificed here?" He keeps it to himself, however, and will meet his fate whichever way it comes.

Mir sits quietly as sweat pours from beneath his unifrom. He has faced many things that could have possibly taken another mans life. Yet it is the dropship that spooks him the most. His stomach feeling as though its in his throat as the G's increase. His hand rests on the head of his trusty axe lending him a small bit of calm. A reminder of Fedrid and its heavily wooded landscape, but never will he get used to the cramped craft as it plummets towards the planets surface.

In an attempt to give off a show of his confidence. He calmly pulls his hair back away from his face. Readying himself for whatever may be ahead. Wether it be blood, glory, or both...
...And the stone of the earth and the wind in the sky bowed before the wisdom of the Ancient One...

Sitting beside the man named Ishmael is the young woman named Cambria. The albino woman is disconcerting to look at, what with her dead looking white skin, so pale that her blood vessels would be visible if not for the swath of black robe the covers her, head to toe. Wisps of white hair escape from the cowl pulled up on her head, and her red eyes are visible, along with the feral smile on here face.

She has a las pistol holstered at her waist, and a hunting rifle in her hand. Slung over her back is a primitive club for close quarters combat. She looks ready and capable on her first mission for the Inquisition.

"Let them burn, all heretics, xenos, and enemies of the God-Emperor," she thinks fiercely to herself. "Burn by the hand of the inquisition,"

Across from Ishmael and Cambria sits a brown-haired man who would be considered of ordinary appearance, but for two things. The first thing is the scar that stretches across his face - a relic of a long-past injury, but instantly noticeable to anyone who sees him. The second thing, and this is usually what people notice first, even before the scar, is the brown Administratum robes he wears that marks him as a part, however small of the Administratum.

The man, whose name is Jericus, carries a staff lying across his knees and has a pistol strapped to his waist. He seems lost in thought as the ship descends. Knowledge casts light upon the darkness, he thinks, glancing at the dataslate. But I fear what we've learned so far won't give us much light at all. He shakes his head. But better to have a single candle than total darkness.

Even in the cramped spaces of a dropship, Iorgo can feel the heat, the light, the everburning glory that is service to the God-Emperor of all mankind! He smiles to himself, thinking of the honor bestowed upon him by being given yet another chance to walk amongst the non-believers and either convert them in the name of The One or send them to Hell, screaming and begging for forgiveness. The latter being in somewhat short demand these days. His robes hide the chain shirt he wears, but not the stub gun in the shoulder holster, the crossbow on his back or hamer at his side. One last time, he pulls the stub free and checks the clip. Each bullet contained within, blessed and prayed upon to ensure their aim. He smiles to the men and women around him, momentarily warping the tatoo on his forehead, all of them faithful servents of man. He basks in their Faith and knows that it will be that alone, Faith, that carries the day. His eyes rest a moment on the albino. He can sense something about this one, but what, the God-Emperor has not made clear yet.

Xanthia is by most standards very pretty. She wears very tight leather clothes to show of her physical... "assets". Her shoulder length blonde hair is dyed black at the very ends. On her arm is an electoo of a single black feather, a memory of her dead sister.

She doesn't like waiting, especially not for trouble. She remembers the day this all started... How her beautiful sister was taken by a high ranking lecher of a lord. How at night she sneaked into his estate and murdered him in his sleep. How moments before she was to be hung the man with sparkling black eyes saved her life... on the condition she serve him... she reluctantly agreed, after all death didn't suit her liking, and the promise of honing her skills was very likable.

While she is waiting for the ship to land she examines both of her laspistols, her sword, and even her knife gets a quick examination for rust. After her weapons check is done she looks around at all of her compainions, her purple eyes glistening in the dim light of the compartment of the transport.
Hows that for an intro post... more to your liking ""V""? :)

The lighter rumbles as it breaks into the lower atmos and then goes steady on the final descent toward the Imperial Guard camp located in the middle of all the trouble that this planet has been facing.

The transport blasts its retro rockets and comes to a jarring halt twenty feet above the ground. At the feet of the group of Acolytes a hatch opens and a ladder drops to the ground below. One by one you exit the ship climbing down to the ground below. One by one you set foot on the cold planet's surface, ready in your own way, to carry on the will of the Inquisition and by extention the God Emperor of Man.
Image
Having disembarked from the lighter, you watch as its engines roar, carrying it upwards towards the cruiser that floats in orbit around this wretched world. As it shrinks away and vanishes, you take in your surroundings. All around you is an Imperial Guard encampment, filled with scores of grimfaced men and women, some bloodied and bandaged, all wearing the grey uniforms of the 97th Battalion. The camp is mostly a sea of tents positioned around smoking craters, steam vents that belch violet clouds of stinking gas into the air, and the wreckage from the recent conflict.

A walker screeches as it patrols the perimeter, its pilot deftly manoeuvring the vehicle through the wreckage of old buildings, smoking cars, and unburied bodies. At the camp's centre there stands a rust-red hab-block bearing the eagle symbol of the Imperium on its exterior.

Beyond it is a range of low mountains covered in ice and the sprawl of industry. Flames belching forth from smokestacks, storage containers, great bubbling vats issuing toxic steam, and more combine to make the structures look like some vast metal insect straddling the peaks of this rugged range.

"It would seem that the God-Emperor has much work for us. This piece of dirt, floating haphazardly through the universe screams for even a semblence Order. What say all, does your Faith in our Lord steel your nerves for the onslaught to come? Mine does..." Iorgo smiles a brutal smile, one almost like a Hive ganger and starts walking toawrds the hab-block, holding his icons aloft and blessing the troops of the Imperium as he goes...

Jericus leans on his staff and looks around the encampment. "I stand ready to help shine the light of Truth into the darkness of this world." He glances back and forth. "And from what I can see, we have our work cut out for us."
