Capitulus Primoris: Edge of Darkness - Hab 7-17

Post by Vardaen » Fri Jul 18, 2008 5:03 pm

Arrived in Coscarla District via the old rail system only a few minutes ago the Acolytes have choosen to split up during the Day Cycle. Xanithia and Solaria have remained behind in the open air market in the center of the distict while Jericus and Haxtus have started off toward Hab Block 7-17 where Saul Arbest, the dead man, once lived.

The brothers pass through the area of teh market. Occupying the area of the Square furthest away from the Enforcer Station, the ragged sprawl of stalls, pedlars, open-air cook shops and scavenger piles is now what passes for open commerce in southern Coscarla. At any time during the day cycle, fifty to a hundred hab-citizens, as well as reclaimators, dregs and a handful of cocky gang blades, will congregate here to do business. The goods on offer are such things as salvaged and ill-repaired household items, patched clothing, food rations supplemented with barely edible cooked vermin.

Slipping through the market the two are out passing between two massive burned out hab blocks. Debris litters the street, and passing down the road anyplace but in the center of it is a danger. The pair travels into another square, the lighting here seems better somewhat, and a few extra lamps flicker and buzz with power around a stand alone building that is marked on your name as the The Third Tantalus Workers' Union. The shuttered windows, the solid door closed and unwelcoming, does not invite outsiders into the building. The pair continues on past this toward the Hab Block where the Arbests were said to live. The road leading to the Hab-Stack is like the others, wide enough for a rover or other vehicle, but so far you haven't seen a single auto on any of the streets. The gutters are clogged with debris, including a few nests of Grump Rats and a bum here or there. After thirty minutes the pair reaches 7-17.

Hab-Stack 7-17 is a boxy, grey ten-story block decorated with arched window surrounds and stacked tiers of carved scarab blazons. The stack sits about twenty minutes walk along one of the main roadways from the square. It can be identified by what's left of the roadway signs that haven't been vandalised or burned. Despite a generally dishevelled appearance, it seems outwardly to be in as good an order as any in the area.
This thread is for Jericus and Haxtus only.

Haxtes moves along with Jericus. They really do not look much like each other, especially now, with the Tech-Priest wearing the respirator. "Jericus," Haxtes begins, "Do you have a strategy? I find it unlikely that proper records are stored on Saul Arbest." Haxtes looks around, never idly, searching for any signs of what they seek, or generally anything out of place.

"I do have a plan," Jericus replies. "I hope it's a good one. But time will tell." A wry smile forms on his face.

"Arbest was out of work for several months," Jericus explains. "That means he should have been running out of money. He wasn't, of course, no doubt because of whomever he was working for. But all his landlord and neighbors will know is that he somehow had enough money to live on. Their natural assumption will be that he either had some unofficial work - probably illegal - or that he went to a loan shark of some sort. That's where we come in."

"We'll go in pretending to be the people he owed money to. Half the criminals around here are as much bureaucrat as anything. So we shouldn't draw too much attention. We'll come in saying that we want to recover our 'investment' from him. We'll be vague about the details, letting the people we talk to fill them in with their own imagination."

"I'll be the bean counter; you're the guy looking for where Arbest might have hid the money he owes us. If pressed, we can even agree to cut the landlord in on a small percentage finder's fee for helping us. I can't imagine he'll have much loyalty to a dead tenant."

"The beauty of this cover story is that it fits Solaria and Xanthia in perfectly, should we need to bring them in. If the landlord or the neighbors aren't cooperative today, we come back tomorrow with the two of them as the 'enforcers.' Typical business operation. Send the technicians and bureaucrats first. Then follow up with muscle only if there's trouble."

Haxtes stands in silence, listening to Jericus' plan. "I am a Tech-Priest, do you believe they think me a probable thug?" Jericus' brother turns, giving him a strange look, hard to read because of his mask, then shrugs. "If is as the Mechanicus wills, so shall it."

The two men are getting closer to the Hab Block and are standing right infront of the building as they finish speaking. Its easy enough for Haxtes to cover up some of his devices, and plenty of men have implants on this planet. The pair should be able to pull off a convincing lie, espcially with the cognomen of the Coblast Assay they have proving who they claim they are. An old woman sits on the stoop of one of the many doors and smiles up at you with a toothless grin, "Gelt for the poor?" She holds her hand out for a coin or two.

"A thug?" Jericus asks, rhetorically. "No." He shakes his head slightly. "We'd neither of us pass for thugs. But then," he adds, "we're not the thugs in this story; we're the credit pushers who try and get the job done without having to bother the thugs. We're the front men who try and make it all look legit." He gives his brother his best fake smile. "But we bring with us the threat of thugs if the people we talk to aren't cooperative. And the best part is, we can back that up with the help of Solaria and Xanthia. They can pass for thugs." His next smile is much more genuine.

As they get closer to the hab block and see the old woman, Jericus looks at her for a moment, his mind calculating as he does so. He was supposed to be a criminal - or at least an illegitimate businessman. His kind typically had more money than respectability. And they often tried to gain the latter by expending the former.

"Of course, mother," he says, taking a few small coins from his pouch and giving them to the poor old woman. "Your misfortune pains me." The fake smile returns. "After a life of toil, you deserve a rest - or at least a good meal."

"The Emperor bless you my boy, the Emperor bless you." She scoops up the throne gelt and pockets it away. "Welcome to Corscarla." She can see you aren't residents of the district, you don't have that 'lost all hope' look on you yet. The main doors to the hab block are broken open and vandalised, the same can be said for the bit of the foyer that you can see from here.

"We're looking for Hab-Stack 7-17," he asks the woman. It was clear which building it was. But no doubt the woman would appreciate being asked. With little enough advantage, a person in her position might find refuge in the power granted a gossip. "Is this it?" He gestures at the dilapidated building.

The old man nods at Jereicus, "This little piece of hell is 7-17, if you're looking for a place to stay there' some vacant rooms up on the higher floors, but you won't find the land lord hanging around here." She starts to cough, and the coughing wracks her body for a few minutes. Holding her coins firmly she pushes her self to her feet.
Oh -5 throne gelt, sound reasonable.

"We are not interested in rooms," the Tech-Priest says, looking down at the woman. He is surprised his brother gave her anything, it would have been much cheaper to torture the information they need out of her, but that would take time, he computes, and decides Jericus has made the correct decision. He is happy Jericus has such a logical mind. He says nothing, however, allow the Adept to continue speaking.
