Re: Maccabeus Quintus - The Bridge
Damien's eyes get extra focused, then relax again. "Nope, there are definitely alive men in that group. How friendly they are or not is a different matter." He waits for the truck to get closer before trying to hail the troopers.

As they draw nearer Rego draws the stormchild from his hip and checks to make sure it is loaded before putting it back in the holster. "I must say that I don't like the looks of this. Could be rogues playing dress up, so stay sharp brothers and sister"...

Haxtes tenses, mumbles a quick mantra to the machine spirits in his weapons and then waits to see what will happen.

Re: Maccabeus Quintus - The Bridge
Your truck rolls up closer and closer, Solaria brakes a good 20 meters away as Rego pulls out his gun. "Hmmm, one way to find out. She hits the horn a few times and leans out the window, "Hail guardsmen! We need access over the bridge, please!" She sort of half waves out the window.
The guardsmen at the bridge make a bit more of a showing of themselves, one by one popping their heads up over the Rhino parked across the road. One of them calls out, "There is a toll on this bridge. You know to keep our troops well supplied. How about... 300 gelt for the lot of you."

Rego counts as the soldiers emerge from their hiding places taking special note of their locations. Then he looks over at Solaria, "What do you think, friend or foe"? His thumb gently pulls back the hammer with and audible racheting. "What say the rest of you brethern?"...

"We knew this was going to be expensive" Jericus replies. "And they have us over a barrel. I doubt there's any negotiating. I'd say we take it, given what we've seen on the road. And if they'll take the toll in trade goods, all the better."

Damien shrugs. "A few extra Thrones here and there were part of the cost of the trip. As long as they don't start aiming lascannons our way, I'm happy."

Re: Maccabeus Quintus - The Bridge
Jericus and Damien both say it was going to cost, and so why expect it not to. Solaria nods in agreement with her "sweet", "He's right, give them some of the cargo in payment and let's move on."
Rego leads the group in negotiating a trade, a partial crate of goods, prayers are offered but the men don't want those. They want either weapony or cold hard gelt. So Rego hands over some gelt instead, you have plenty, and the PDF forces move their Rhino out of the way and your truck rumbles across the bridge. Those on the back of the bridge can see over the side, its not very wide or stable, and down below you glimpse the bodies of dead men, and a still smoking husk of some form of truck similar to your own. It seems this bridge has seen plenty of fighting recently. You make it half way across when you spy more men on the far side, and they have a barricade of cinder blocks and barb wire. One of the men, his helm and face wrapped in a scarf shouts out, "There is a toll for leaving the bridge! 400 Gelt for a truck that size." A heavy stubber swings around from the pill box on that side, and trains on you.
Looking back at the first group of men they have their weapons trained on you as well, it would seem you are sitting in the middle of a bridge, solider on both sides, heavy weapon teams and lasguns trained on your front and your rear. "Let me repeat that, 500 Gelt to get off the bridge", the man says. The more you look at these men the less you like them, and notice they don't wear uniforms or any insignia of a PDF force.

Re: Maccabeus Quintus - The Bridge
"We're not here to clean up this corner of the galaxy," Jericus says calmly and in a low voice. "Right now they're what amounts to authority around here. They've got control of the bridge that we need to use, and they've got us at a severe disadvantage. It may well be different on the trip back." He glances around gauging how quickly he could draw his weapons and who his best targets would be, just in case things went south. "I say pay the man."

Re: Maccabeus Quintus - The Bridge
Damien rubs his psy-focus, for a moment wishing he had focused on pyromancy instead of biomancy. He could simply call down fire from the sky, erasing these thieves from the face of this planet. But he chose a different route, which has been useful in previous circumstances. "We brought plenty of Gelt. Let's not let them in on that fact, and pretend to be bitter and impoverished by their graft. We can deal with them on our own terms at a later time."
