BC2012: The Recap

Post by Vardaen » Tue Jul 31, 2012 7:18 pm

Here we have the recap thread for all that happened over the weekend.

I personally had a great time seeing everyone and playing a lot of games!

Folks came to my play Friday for some burgers and Nightfall game, we had the firepit going in the back yard and played some Werewolf around the fire. Then way too late we played some Space Alert!

My personal list of things I got to play:

Nightfall
Space Alert
Legend of the Five Rings CCG
Decent
Ascension
Lord of the Rings
Shadows over Camelot
Samurai
Cutthroat Caverns
Werewolf
Cards Against Humanity

"The Train Game" with Lil'V and Lil'JP -- that was fun!

I missed out on the Endicott Epidemic, ZOMBIES!!!!, and Ghost Stories, but all in all I played plenty of stuff!

Pic coming soon

I fulfilled my victory conditions and played every game that I brought. All in all, I played:

Cards Against Humanity
Space Alert
Legend of the Five Rings CCG
Decent
Pandemic
Lord of the Rings
Shadows over Camelot
Ghost Stories
Werewolf

More importantly, I got spiedies on both Saturday and Sunday nights. For those of you who don't know what spiedies are, you'll just have to come to Brencon next year to find out.

If I recall, these are the games I got to play. First time playing the game marked with *.

* Space Alert
* Werewolf
* Decent
* Shadows over Camelot
* Legend of the Five Rings CCG
Pandemic
Nightfall
* Ghost Stories
* Lord of the Rings
* Cards Against Humanity

Overall, I really enjoyed Space Alert. It's a nice (and somewhat short) co-op game. I'm not surprised that there was good communication and teamwork in all of the Space Alert games. I imagined that other teams playing that game might get into back-and-forth about who's doing what or they're doing something else, but in all of the SA games I played in, everyone really brought their teamwork abilities and cooperative skills to the table. I also really liked the real-time aspect of this co-op game. In many co-op games (especially with lots of first time players), it feels like your personal actions are more of a collective action since everyone can discuss and figure out the best move. Here in SA, your actions feels like your own since everyone else is racing against time to do their own tasks. There's some time to talk strategy/actions, but not enough time to debate once the clock starts ticking.

I watched a little bit of Decent getting played last year and wanted to try it out for myself this year. I also really liked this game. Although, it can be a very drawn out/long game. I think it would be fun to do a tabletop campaign series of games and retaining your character from dungeon to dungeon. I also think that this game would also be a good gateway for people who have never played RPGs to transition into an RPG.

The Shadows over Camelot co-op game was also pretty good. I think it plays a bit faster and easier with more people. I also thought LotR co-op game was okay, but maybe not as good as the other co-op games.

The L5R CCG game was interesting. I've never played a CCG before, so it took me a little bit to get the hang of it. Overall, it was pretty easy to play once you got familiar with the cards. I could see this being pretty fun once you became proficient in your clan's deck.

Of the group card games (Werewolf, Cards Against Humanity), I think Werewolf would be a great game for gamers/non-gamers to play around a campfire. The small deck and very simple rules for play allows pretty much all age ranges to play.

I'm still curious to find out who brought the WH40K Imperial Guard: Only War RPG books (x2) for the auction.

I think we also had lots of left over beer and cider, but that's probably just because TetNak wasn't there.

I enjoyed myself this year and got to play some things I hadn't before. By next year I plan to have my zombie scenario rebuilt and operational. For that tragedy I apologize to everyone...

Space Alert
Werewolf
Shadows over Camelot
Legend of the Five Rings CCG
Pandemic
Lord of the Rings
Cards Against Humanity
Endicott Epidemic
...And the stone of the earth and the wind in the sky bowed before the wisdom of the Ancient One...

I have a feeling those 40K booklets came from Pyg.

Oooh! Me Too!

Games Played (first time marked with *):
*Cards Against Humanity
Neuroshima Hex (w/ Brennor and MV)
WereWolf (w darn near everyone)
L5R CCG (Iron Crane racing to narrow defeat with 36 honor and 15 cards missing from its fate deck w/ Trogdor and Vardaen)
Ascension (Amaris, Vardaen, MadVlat, others)
Shadowrun TCG (w Brennor and Shadowkk)
Endicott Epidemic (w MadVlat, MaxPower, JP)
*Pirate Fluxx (w Brennor, Joni, Wayloss, Micro, Mat)
Ghost Stories (w MaxPower, Shurijo, Trogdor)
*Lord of the Rings (w MaxPower, shadowkk, trogdor, shurijo)
SmallWorld (w Joni, Robin, Alyssa)
*Bang! (w Joni, Robin, Alyssa, Lil' Bren)
Cutthroat Caverns (w Vardaen, Ed, Mike, Ed's remaining posse)
*Heroica (w Brennor, Lil' Bren, Lil' Joni)

Ghost Stories is always a good time, since there is a very real possibility that the players will fail, and well made decisions are rewarded.

Bang! is one of those games I've heard raved about, but never played. Now that I have given it a go, I can say that it's like werewolf, but with more cards, more thinking, and more lying. More cowboys, less burning wolf poo.

I did bring the "Only War" booklets, as they were provided to me through my local gaming store on Free RPG day. Enjoy!

Fun Facts:
- If your party can not rest to heal fatigue, eating 7 hamburgers and a half gallon of Dr. Pepper has the same effect.
- Sake, Souju, Mead, Cider, Beer. Yes, have some.
- 1836 was a very dangerous year for ungentlemanly behavior.

Lots of games, and lots of fun! :)

I'm not sure I can remember everything played (ie: I may edit list later):
Neuroshima Hex
Cards Against Humanity
Werewolf
L5R
Ascension
Descent
Pandemic
Union Pacific
Shadowrun TCG
Pirate Fluxx
Heroica

During some time while waiting for a spot to open up in a game, brushed up on Warhamster and Eclipse Phase, neither of which I could drum up enough players for when asking those that weren't in a game.
