Ring of Air - Stronger than Steel

Beyond the boarders of the Emerald Empire lies a vast and diverse world centered around the Burning Sands -- a place cursed by Shilah the Sun and Kaleel the Moon. For too long the Samurai in Rokugan have remained ignorant of the greater world around them.
A danger is rising, but is it too late for the children of the Kami? Only you know that answer.Run by the Game Master Moto Vardaen

Ring of Air - Stronger than Steel

Post by Vardaen » Mon Oct 27, 2008 10:51 pm

Image - The world is wind, immaterial and ever-changing. Not so terribly long ago, the Imperial City would have been a much different place. But then, supposedly that was always so. It was ever-changing, always shifting to adopt the mood of those within it. During the reign of the Emperor Toturi III it had been a center of progress and cooperation between the clans, for the most part. After his disappearance and death it had become a hotbed of political manipulation and quiet animosity. Now that the Phoenix Clan had assumed stewardship over the city, in the aftermath of what was being called the Battle of Toshi Ranbo, there was a quiet tension to the place, laced with an undercurrent of resentment.

Only a few months ago it was the deep of winter and the Unicorn Clan Daimyo, known as The Khan Moto Chagatai launched and unprecedented winter war to take the throne of Rokugan by force. With cover allies in the Mantis the Unicorn marched on the capital city of Toshi Ranbo deep with Lion Clan territories. Sacking Kyuden Ikoma as they went, the Unicorn then drew on the power of their Bauranghar, the army of Ki-rin Shugenja, to move the massive army through Lion territory virtually unopposed. Drawing on the kami to ravage the lands with winter storms the Unicorn arrived at the gates of the City of Violence Behind Courtliness in full fighting force.

Only the Akodo, and a small collection of allies from those clans who had troops in the city stood against the Unicorn. That is where the Ki-Rin cavalry advantage ended, and the battle was pitched and bloody. During the fighting The Khan and the Shogun Akodo Kaneka faced off, and it was the bastard son of Toturi I that died in that fight falling to the Khan's scimitar. Toturi Sezaru, the brother of the Shogun, driven mad by Tadaka's Last Wish, ravaged attackers and defenders from high above the city with magical fire until his wife stabbed him in the belly ending his life. With Toturi III already lost in the Shadowlands months ago (which precipitated the attack in the first place) the power base in Rokugan was quickly failing.

When the battle was over, the Empress Toturi Kurako was dead having taken her own life when she thought her guard at failed to keep the Khan's forces from taking her hostage. The Imperial Chancellor Bayushi Kaukatsu was also dead, killed by angry kansen of Toshi Ranbo awoken by the bloody battle. Dozens of other important political figures from all ranks of the state were also dead or missing. The Emerald Champion had fell in the Shadowlands at Toturi III's side last year, and the Jade Champion abdicated his post and fled Rokugan with the heir of Shinsei in secret leaving no one of true authority to left within Toshi Ranbo.

The battle ended, with the Unicorn not defeated, but not victorious either. For the Phoenix Clan arrived using magical travel to bring their Shiba samurai to bear on the conflict attempting to simply end it, and save lives. It was however the Dragon of Fire, the Celestial Manifestation of the Oracle of Fire, who came with the Phoenix that truly ended the conflict.

The Phoenix took stewardship of the city from all opposition, and declares the war over and none could contest them. They send Moto Chagatai and the Unicorn home with no further punishments, and did not allow the young Daimyo of the Lion Matsu Yoshino to challenge the Unicorn Khan. So the young Lion Daimyo swore an oath to sack Shiro Moto within one year.

That was then; this is now, months later. The winter is gone, spring has bloomed into summer and with nearly every single position of power left void in the empire, the scramble of courtier, samurai and shugenja to fill that void has begun. The Imperial City is packed to the gills with power players and those that want to be such. The Fire Dragon remains flying over the Imperial Palace declaring the Phoenix as the city's masters -- for now.

The Month of the Horse, 1169, Toshi Ranbo

For one reason or another you have come to Toshi Ranbo, perhaps the son of an important diplomat, or perhaps a samurai to be taught a lesson in the courts, or perhaps a shugenja who has rewarded with a comfortable posting or any of a dozen reasons might bring you to Toshi Ranbo. That is where the differences in our heroes' situation end. What they share in common is that there are many others of their clan with higher status and glory and there is only so much room at the clan estates. Many of the clan estates are destroyed still from the war; the Crane for example lost everything in the attack, strange explosions demolishing their holdings in the city. As a result you are forced one by one to find someplace to stay. Some of you are forgotten about, either by accident, or on purpose.

In the House of Lost Ambition you have managed to find a room, a place to eat and drink, and somewhere to spend some time. In a very out of the way portion of the Okura District an odd collection of Scorpion, Crab, Mantis, Phoenix and Crane have come to spend the night...
Welcome to the game all! Please don't post yet. I'm going to put up a second post then you can!

The House of Lost Ambition is a two story Tea House and Inn set in an out of the way corner of the Okura District on the north side of the city. The house is owned by a merchant company of insignificant reputation, and has been run by the middle aged man Kirita for the last four years. None of this however is important, and perhaps not even known by those samurai who are now forced to stay here. What is known is that Kirita's Inn is clean and had empty rooms. Tea as well as Sake is served in the main room, along with local foods of the region. Being land locked at the city is the seaweed is dried, the fish is freshwater, and the rice and soy sauce is plentiful.

The downstairs is worked by Kirita's daughter Etsuko who tends to the patrons needs as a waitress and when possible entertainment in the form of her biwa playing. Kirita spends most of his time in the kitchen cooking, and so the older hemin is rarely seen or bothered by the samurai of the common room.

With low beams, thick support posts and a few shoji sheens the main room is easily divided up if need be, or it can seem more open if the tables are pushed together in the middle. Paper lanterns hang from the beems and give off a soft glow this evening, for the Hour of Bayushi (or among the hemin the House of the Rooster) is now half way through and Lord Yakamo the Sun is thinking about retiring for the day.

Seated in the common room, on the mats at various tables are a handful of hemin merchants and farmers who had come to town to sell their things and found a place to eat and sleep for the night.

Seated in the room are a few samurai while others are returning from court or activities in the city back to the Inn for the evening.
Please begin posting. The samurai mentioned in the room are you guys, a few of you can post being in the room, others can post arriving in the room. Feel free to use your immagination and spice things up!

In a corner of the common room in the House of Lost Ambition sits a young man eating a simple meal of fish and rice. Doji Kijuro, as he is known, though not to anyone here, sits there dressed in a light blue kimono, with his long bleached white hair flowing softly down his back. A quick look at the man, and his slightly effeminate facial features, would give most people the idea this man is soft, and weak. Though the Dashio belted to his waist would beg to differ.

Softly, Kijuro sets down a bowl of rice on the table, turning it afterwards so that the side of the bowl with the most rice is to the man's left. Kijuro then sets down the pair of chopsticks on the table above and to the right of the bowl, pointing them towards the other side of the bowl. Looking around the room Kijuro straightens his kimono, and lifts a glass of water to take a drink, though sets it back down before drinking, to adjust the position of the chopsticks. Picking up the glass once more Kijuro drinks deeply, and places the cup back on the table, in the same place he had picked it up from.

Kijuro, picking the chopsticks, and bowl of rice back up looks around the room again before going back to eating.

What a task this is... He thinks to himself. Walk a few days with a Courtier, only to be set on my own and told I wouldn't be needed in town here anymore... I was hoping for a chance to prove myself, not sit around by myself...

Bayushi Seirei is entertaining a group of small children with a story of how he lost his left eye. "And then he launched the firework. And it caught me right here." He points to his eye patch. just then some one walks in and he immediatly looks up. He turns his head back to the children after realizing it is just another heimen. He take another drink of sake. "He took my eye that day. But I shall take his head."

The Children giggle at the story from the Scorpion samurai until that hemin that just entered turns toward the crowd of young boys and girls, "Ichiro, and the rest of you, go home. You are to be in here! This is not a place for children!" He bows a half dozen times to the Scorpion samurai applogizing for the distraction of the hemin kids. The children groan and cry out sad they have to leave, but then scamper out of the building with their father slapping them on the head and shoulders as they go, "Hurry hurry!" He bows again and chases after the gaggle of children that pour out of the building.

The other patrons show a sign of relief at the leaving of the kids, at this hour those kids should be going to bed.

Another young samurai sits in the Tea House called the House of Lost Ambition, sitting at one of the tables with better light, eating some fish and rice, with a cup of tea beside him.

He is a small man, but fit, wearing a orange and red kimono with a wakizashi at his side, and on the other side is a satchel bulging with what looks to be rolled scrolls proclaiming him to be some sort of shugenja of the Phoenix Clan.

His head is shaven in the manner of a monk, and he has piercing black eyes. As he sits, he uses his chop sticks to gather up some fish and rice, bringing the food carefully to his mouth, and then chewing slowly before putting the chopsticks down and taking a sip of the local tea.

The tea house is full, and easily he might be passed over as nothing special when eyes scan over him. Tsuruchi Tokugawa sits quietly in the corner, his meal finished, and day drawing to a close. He has traveled far in the last few days, and for one, does not mind the simple relaxation the common room offers.

He wears the green and yellow of his clan, the Mantis, though half his chest is exposed. Leaning backward, he simply scans the room, while his massive longbow sits idly beside him.

"Etsuko-san come I need another drink." "Hmm I see a crane, perhaps a doji..." He strains his head to get a look at the man's mon. "Yes definantly a Doji." He turns his head a little more and looks around his one eye making it difficult to tell the phoenix's mon. he quickly thinks about it and calls out to the Doji; "Doji-sama Ippai Nomo Ka?"(Shall we have a drink?) he waits for a response.

Kijuro looks up towards the Scorpion that hailed him across the room, then back down to the bite of fish he was lifting towards his mouth. Setting the food back down, and placing his chopsticks back properly before looking back up to respond to the Scorpions request.

"Hai Scorpion-Sama," Kijuro replies standing up, and moving towards the Scorpions Table. "Sumimasen, Bayushi-Sama." He corrects himself, noting the other mans mon as he approaches the table. Kijuro takes a seat across from the man, taking a moment to straighten his kimono as he sits down, and speaks to the Scorpion again.

"So Bayushi-Sama, Tea or Sake?"
"Sumimasen" - Excuse me

He speaks to the man his voice cordial; "Ahh you are my guest Doji-sama. Therefore it is your choice." the Bayushi looks the man over once before asking. "Would you happen to know a man by the name of Kakita Kenmai? For I would dearly like to repay him for something he did for me." He lets out a small but notingly maniacle smile as he speaks...
