Diplomacy 1: Learner Game

Diplomacy is a strategic board game. Its main distinction from most board wargames is negotiation: Players spend much of their time forming (and betraying) alliances with other players. Set in Europe just before the beginning of World War I , Diplomacy is played by seven players, each controlling the armed forces of a major European power.

Russian colonists spread vodka and fur hats around in Prussia, "Comrades! Do you not wish for equal wages, and bread on every table? We gladly welcome our comrades into the brotherhood!"

...Bulgarians, ignorant peasants who forgot their place within my empire. But I am a forgiving ruler, and so will allow them to remain as citizens...

Rules question.

If a unit is set to Hold, and another attacks that space. So you have 1 Defending and 1 Attacking, what is the result? Does the attacker bounce, or do both units retreat, or is the attacker defeated? I'm a bit lost still.

What happens if two units attack each other. Say for example Serbia Attacks Bulgaria and Bulgaria Attacks Serbia?

If one unit attacks another unit (both have 1) nothing happens. Both stay at their place. This means with a move order you can enter a free space, but if it is occupied, you need support from at least one unit. If the defending unit gets help with its holding, you need more etc.

If two units attack eachother, with no support, nothing happens ;-) Both stay.

What happens if 1 unit attacks a place with 1 unit in hold and one unit supporting the hold? Is the attacker disbanded?

I'm so not used to this game yet, sorry for all the dumb questions

No, if the defender wins, the attack is repelled, and the attacker does not move. A unit is only disbanded, (a) if the nation controls to few supply centers or (b) it must retreat but cannot (if the ruler then controls enough supply centers in the fall, he/she can build again.

Keep in mind you can also support or convoy units from other nations (you just need to harmonize your orders...). Forming alliances is a crucial part of the game.

So on the flip side of that, if 1 unit attacks, 1 unit supports the attack, and the denfender has only 1 unit, that 1 unit retreats.

I'm well aware we have to ally, this thread just doesn't seem to see any of the talk.
