The Run to Baldwin

Three years after the zombie apocalypse, mankind has gathered in small pockets to form civilization anew. One such pocket is Castle, a tiny fortified community on the coast of South Carolina. Constantly in danger of running low on supplies, Castle leadership regularly sends out "runs" into the abandoned world beyond its walls to loot and to scavenge whatever they can find. Often the runs are for food, fuel, or medical supplies, but occasionally these runs are to collect vital information about the world that fell. These runs are the most dangerous of all.

The runners quickly made their way to all of the windows they could find in the immediate vicinity. The boards covering them were easily peered between or quietly pulled aside to facilitate seeing out.

The Zeds outside were scarce from what they could see. There were a few wandering around aimlessly on each side of the building, and a few more in the street beyond. The bulk of the hoard must still have been at the back of the building . . . where the runners entered, but without heading back through the library, toward the Woman in White, the runners couldn't tell for sure. That was, though, very Zed-like behavior. The animated dead might hover around that door all day without something else to distract them.

"There's only one over here," Books said as he returned from the windows in the archive room. "We could go out one of these, and then make a run for it. We'd be at the car before the street Zeds could catch up, and maybe before the hoard even saw us. That one Zed, though . . . we'd have to take it out nice and quiet."

"Sounds like a plan to me," Sandy said. "Would have been the perfect job for Hoss," she thought, and thinking it made her sick to her stomach. Sandy headed back toward the archive room to take a look out the windows for herself, muttering the whole way. "Maybe we could find the woman in white and throw her ass out the window. That would create a distraction, I think."

As she turned the corner, Sandy stopped. "Wait, we could start this thing up and toss it out the windows on the opposite side," she announced as she kicked at the generator. "Maybe I could rig it to explode. That would send the Zed's running for sure."

"Would be a nice idea, Sandy", Cap said, agreeing with the plan. "It would even distract the Zeds, when we're already leaving. Strap the white bitch on the generator, too. That'd be best."

Cap began removing some of the barricades from the windows.

Books eyes shifted back and forth nervously at the mentions of the woman in white. Hearing her joked about was clearly disturbing to him, but he shook it off when Cap started pulling at the boards.

"Let me help," he said and began working at the window with Cap.

Sandy got Books to help her cart the generator to the other side of the wing of the library. The hoisted the piece of machinery up onto a desk that was right against a window, and then set to work pulling the boards off that window.

As soon as both windows were clear of boards and opened (the window they planned to throw the generator out of to create the distraction, and the opposite window they planned on exiting through) Sandy called back to Cap as quietly as she could, "Get ready!"

When everyone was in place and ready, she shoved the generator out the window!

Right before they began their distraction, Cap has loaded the last shells and bullets into his guns got ready to leave. He tightened the strap of the rifle so that it'd stay right in front of his chest when he has to put his hands to other use.

Cap waited next to the 'exit' and intended to e the last one leaving the building in case he had to cover the runners escape. He only let loose of his rifle as he grabbed the edge of the windowsill.

The generator hit the ground with a resounding crash. Sandy waited for a few seconds for the explosion she had rigged to go off.

Nothing.

It was a dud.

The noises from the breaking window and the crashing generator were already drawing off a number of Zeds from around the building. The distraction wasn't a resounding success, but it was a success.

Cap watched carefully out his window. He saw several of the Zeds in the street lumber over to the building, following the sound of the crash, but the Zed just below his window didn't leave. It continued to mill about in an aimless semicircle.

"Son of a' "

Somehow, Sandy knew the rigged explosion wasn't going to work. It was just one of those kinda days. She raced over to the window where Cap was waiting.

"Didn't take the bait? Figures. I'll jump down and take off toward the street. As soon as it comes after me, you come down behind and dispatch it quietly." She shoved Hoss's ax into Cap's hand. "Books, you come down last. It's not that far, but be careful."

Sandy waited until the Zed was about as far away from the window as it was going to get and then jumped.

Cap just put the axe into his belt since he did'nt know how to secure it any other way. And as soon as Sandy was back on her feet, Cap waited until the Zed went after her and slid of the sill to get him.

Where Sandy landed graciously on the ground, Cap touched down hard and he audible exhaled as the impact forced him to his knees. As quick as he could he pulled out the axe and followed after the Zed who 'waited' on this side of the building.

As soon as Sandy hit the ground, the Zed let out a moan and began awkwardly running after her. She sprinted to the street, leaving the Zed behind. It clearly couldn't keep up.

Cap hit the ground just seconds behind. He was on the Zed in no time and dispatched it with speed and stealth. Hoss' ax cut cleanly through its rotten head.

With a grunt and a stifled cry of pain, Books was on the ground as well. He stood, made sure the papers were securely under his arm, and then began hobbling after Cap. He was moving pretty quickly for an old man, but not fast enough if any Zeds gave chase.
