The pirates had approached in the waning hours of the night and were upon them before their captain could do much more than beat to quarters. It was a brutal fight in which the captain and the first mate of the Oliphant were killed, and Fin and Wavedancer, along with many other crew and passengers, were captured. The Oliphant was stripped of its cargo and burned to the waterline, while the crew and passengers were taken to a hidden cove along Blood Bay that seemed to serve as a pirate haven. The sadistic crew of the Sea Wyvern were only too happy to inform the captives that they were now bound for a life of slavery from which there was no escape. But that was not to be the fate of Fin and Wavedancer.
Sailors, in general, are superstitious creatures. And these pirates were no exception. Selling a captured sailor into slavery was one thing. But doing the same to a priest of Procan was too much. A ship that did something like that was risking the wrath of the Storm Lord. And no pirate captain worth his salt would run that risk.
It was Wavedancer's family ties that saved him. The half-blood son of a sea elf and a human, he represented a tie to the local sea elves - a powerful friend and a dangerous enemy. It wasn't certain how close this half-sea elf's ties were to his underwater people. But it was clearly worth the pirate's while to find out before they did anything rash.
And so, while they watched their former shipmates get marched into the caves that formed the pirates' den, there to be stuffed into cages, Fin and Wavedancer were brought into another part of the complex and were locked in a storeroom. Ironically, it was a weapon storeroom, filled with swords, arrows, daggers, and the like. But the two were given dire warnings about what would happen if they tried to escape. And with the a pirate guarding their door, and dozens of pirates inhabiting the caves, they knew that escape was impossible.
Everything changed a few hours ago. All at once, a wave of shadow had passed through the walls and across the room. As it passed over the two of them, they had both felt incredibly sick, and a terrible pain enveloped them, as if they were being simultaneously crushed and pulled apart. It was several minutes before either could speak, much less move. And in that time they began to hear terrible cries and roars from outside the locked door. Soon, the sounds of fighting were added to this cacophony.
With no knowledge of what was happening, the two prisoners armed themselves and waited. Twice someone tried to open the door. And once someone even started battering it down. But in each case, something - it sounded like another attacker - pulled them away. It's now been several hours since the shadow wave passed over them. And finally the sounds of fighting have diminished, though the general din remains. It's clear that something terrible has happened here; and it's equally clear that dangerous or not, they need to get out of here.
