INTERLUDE - Pirate Captives!

The first Savage Tide has already touched the mortal world, yet none who live today recall this terrible time of red ruin. It swept over an ancient city, transforming beggar and noble, merchant and thief, resident and visitor, one and all into feral, ravenous fiends. What took the ancients hundreds of years to build came crumbling down in a matter of days. When the final ripples of the tide faded, only ruins remained.

Now, after a thousand years, the hidden architect of the Savage Tide gazes upon new targets. This time, the doom will not be limited to one hapless city. This time, all of civilization is perched on the shore, blissfully ignorant of what the tide is about to bring in.

INTERLUDE - Pirate Captives!

Post by Trogdor » Fri Sep 24, 2010 4:27 am

The past several days have not been good for Fin Madarin and Alaenae Solgiven, Wavedancer to his shipmates. A week ago, the two had been working on the Oliphant, a trading ship heading to Sasserine with a valuable shipment of silk and spices. Fin, a young priest of Procan, the god of the seas, had been acting as part ship's chirurgeon and part chaplain, while Wavedancer, a water sorcerer, was engaged as a ship's mage. They had enjoyed an uneventful journey until three days ago when, as they were little more than a day out of Sasserine, they were taken by the pirate ship the Sea Wyvern.

The pirates had approached in the waning hours of the night and were upon them before their captain could do much more than beat to quarters. It was a brutal fight in which the captain and the first mate of the Oliphant were killed, and Fin and Wavedancer, along with many other crew and passengers, were captured. The Oliphant was stripped of its cargo and burned to the waterline, while the crew and passengers were taken to a hidden cove along Blood Bay that seemed to serve as a pirate haven. The sadistic crew of the Sea Wyvern were only too happy to inform the captives that they were now bound for a life of slavery from which there was no escape. But that was not to be the fate of Fin and Wavedancer.

Sailors, in general, are superstitious creatures. And these pirates were no exception. Selling a captured sailor into slavery was one thing. But doing the same to a priest of Procan was too much. A ship that did something like that was risking the wrath of the Storm Lord. And no pirate captain worth his salt would run that risk.

It was Wavedancer's family ties that saved him. The half-blood son of a sea elf and a human, he represented a tie to the local sea elves - a powerful friend and a dangerous enemy. It wasn't certain how close this half-sea elf's ties were to his underwater people. But it was clearly worth the pirate's while to find out before they did anything rash.

And so, while they watched their former shipmates get marched into the caves that formed the pirates' den, there to be stuffed into cages, Fin and Wavedancer were brought into another part of the complex and were locked in a storeroom. Ironically, it was a weapon storeroom, filled with swords, arrows, daggers, and the like. But the two were given dire warnings about what would happen if they tried to escape. And with the a pirate guarding their door, and dozens of pirates inhabiting the caves, they knew that escape was impossible.

Everything changed a few hours ago. All at once, a wave of shadow had passed through the walls and across the room. As it passed over the two of them, they had both felt incredibly sick, and a terrible pain enveloped them, as if they were being simultaneously crushed and pulled apart. It was several minutes before either could speak, much less move. And in that time they began to hear terrible cries and roars from outside the locked door. Soon, the sounds of fighting were added to this cacophony.

With no knowledge of what was happening, the two prisoners armed themselves and waited. Twice someone tried to open the door. And once someone even started battering it down. But in each case, something - it sounded like another attacker - pulled them away. It's now been several hours since the shadow wave passed over them. And finally the sounds of fighting have diminished, though the general din remains. It's clear that something terrible has happened here; and it's equally clear that dangerous or not, they need to get out of here.
Welcome Max_Powers and TetNak to the Savage Tide game!

You are in a cave complex in a storeroom filled with weapons. There is one sturdy door out and it's locked. You don't really know your way out of the cave complex, since the pirates put hoods over your heads when they brought you in here and went to efforts to confuse you.

I hope to link you up with the others soon. A word to the wise, though. Be careful about engaging in combat if you can avoid it. The encounters around you are calibrated for the whole group. They are not tailored you the pair of you. But I wanted to give you guys a little bit of fun while the others were approaching.

Also, I understand that Max will not be able to post much tomorrow until the evening. But at least Tet can start things off.

Wavedancer has been somewhat silent during their captivity. He has felt caught in a fisherman's net. The experience is overly traumatic for a creature such as himself. He fights against the urge to scream out in panic, attempting to escape every way possible. "Has the fighting passed?" he finally asks, moving to the door and listening intently for a few moments. He attempts to push the dread, pain, and sickness from his mind.
Do we have all our specific equipment?
The acquan elf tests the door, attempting to push it open ...

Your specific equipment was taken from you. You think it was put aside somewhere nearby to be returned should you be properly ransomed. However, you have blankets, clothing, crossbow bolts, swords, pole weapons, axes, and even some wine, rum, and dry goods.
Wavedancer listens to the door and it seems as if there is no active conflict outside the door. There is still a lot of screaming and screeching and growling in the general area. But it seems like the coast is clear outside the door.

He pushes on the door, but it's still firmly locked. And it's a good thing too, or one of the earlier attackers might have gotten in.

Is the door locked from the inside or outside?
Wavedancer turns to the priest, "We may be safe, for the moment." He looks over the general supplies, grabbing up anything he can in order to defend himself. He is decent with some weapons, even though he is a sorcerer by trade.
I'd prefer to grab a spear if available.

A quick inventory of the weapons shows a dozen clusters of crossbow bolts, three short swords, five rapiers, two long swords, two scimitars, a glaive, a guisarme, a halberd, a couple of light crossbows, a heavy crossbow, two battleaxes, nine throwing axes, and a great axe. The complete lack of any uniformity in the weapons leads you to believe that they have been taken from previous victims of the pirate's rapacity.

Fin walks over to the weapons and takes a short sword and hooks it into his belt.
Fin turns to Wavedancer,"I think we need a bit more force to open the door, so we should try to push it open together."
Fin walks to the door and starts pushing at full tilt.

I don't know if I can use the spell Bull's Strength on both of us.
If this isn't possible I only use this spell on myself.
Use Bull's Strength on my own and if possible on Wavedancer too.
After that start pushing at the door.

"We could chop the door down," Wavedancer says, indicating the axes amongst what they had found. The elf frowns, not very well versed with any of the weapons they have found.

He looks to Fin, "I do not think we will be able to force the door open, that is, unless Procan sees fit to grant you a boon ..."

Fin calls upon the power of Procan to grant him strength. And the God of the Sea responds. With his new-found strength and assistance from Wavedancer, the young priest slams into the door with his shoulder several times until the hinges pull right out of the cave wall and the door collapses at his feet. Of course it was never really the door that was meant to hold you in there. You could have escaped from the storage room at any time with a little effort. It was always the horde of pirates outside that stopped you. Of course now staying put seems more dangerous than leaving. And so here you are.

The door opens to a short corridor, and it's here that you wait for a moment to see if anyone - or anything - has taken notice of your smashing down the door. A few moments of listening to the cacophony of yells screeches and growls echoing through the caves tells you that any noise you made was lost in the din.

Creeping carefully out, you see that the corridor leads to a large sandy-floored cavern that seems to be some sort of trophy hall. The centerpiece of the displays is an enormous reptilian skull, nearly six feet in length, mounted on a wooden display. Other trophies line the wall - nameplates from ships, battered sea chests, mounted heads of sea monsters, and weathered figureheads, each doubtless carrying a sordid history of theft and betrayal.
Fin casts Bull's Strength on himself. (He's the stronger of the two.)
Strength Checks to push down the door:
Wavedancer check to assist: 19, success
Fin's check: 23 (+1 for assist, +2 for Bull's Str)
Door is busted open

"I think we should take the biggest alley," says Fin, pointing to the right. He draws his short sword and makes his way to the right. After a few steps he turns to Wavedancer," Are you coming as well?"

The elf allows an eyebrow to rise. "What else would I do?" he asks. He grabs up a sword off the ground and prepares to push forward. "Any way, at least right now, seems as good as the other." Wavedancer looks around, attempting to spy anything out of sorts in their environment. Whatever passed over them, he does not wish to meet that again ...
