Chapter Three - Sargasso

The first Savage Tide has already touched the mortal world, yet none who live today recall this terrible time of red ruin. It swept over an ancient city, transforming beggar and noble, merchant and thief, resident and visitor, one and all into feral, ravenous fiends. What took the ancients hundreds of years to build came crumbling down in a matter of days. When the final ripples of the tide faded, only ruins remained.

Now, after a thousand years, the hidden architect of the Savage Tide gazes upon new targets. This time, the doom will not be limited to one hapless city. This time, all of civilization is perched on the shore, blissfully ignorant of what the tide is about to bring in.

Chanur has lashed himself to the wheel area, he knows there can be a lot of waves during bad weather and does not want to get washed over board and leave the ship not being steered. He focuses on getting the ship back on coarse, knowing the consequences if he does not.
Not sure if its possible to take 20 here if so I will , but trying to get the ship back on coarse.

Wavedancer rummages around in his scroll pouch and looks for something that might help the ship survive. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the proper spells to do anything in this instance. So instead, he does what any good sailor does. He grabs his gear, makes sure that his things are stowed in his rooms and goes about the regular duties as a crewman.

Grabbing the bag of holding back from the navigator, he says "I'll guard this with my life, Daerith."

After that, he readies himself for the worse.
I thought I had something that might help us steer this rig...but it doesn't appear so. I'll do what I can to help where ever I'm needed.

Masher Reef

Post by Trogdor » Mon Jun 18, 2012 6:54 pm

Things are not looking good. The ship is heading toward the deadly cliffs to the northwest, not the sandy beaches to the west or the safe harbor to the southwest. Chanur knows that he can't let this go on much longer or the entire ship is doomed. So with all hands on deck, he uses every trick he knows to push the bow southward. Mari, Lirith, and Anya are aloft, along with an invisible servant summoned by Daerith, all braving the wind and rain to keep the sails trimmed just so. Daerith, Berek, and Gaed are on deck pulling ropes, taking depths, and helping Chanur with the wheel. Fin is on the mid deck chanting a prayer to Procan, while Konrad, Helgar, and Dolan work the pump. Below, Kurt and Palan do what they can for the inevitable leaks that occur in the ship. Waves crash over the side occasionally threatening to knock someone overboard who isn't properly secured. But they've had fair warning of this storm, and guide ropes have been strung. Besides, Wavedancer remains at the rail, ready to jump in should someone be swept away.

Over the next hour, the ship slowly, ever so slowly, begins to turn southward. Soon it's facing the right direction, though it's far closer to land than Chanur would like. Still, at least it's in no danger of hitting the cliffs. And despite spending a great deal of his attention on steering, the captain of the Sea Wyvern manages to keep the ship from rolling or washing as well.

Another hour passes amid the chaos of trying to keep the ship safe and on course, and by now dusk has fallen - a dusk almost as black as night. Thankfully the ship has a few eternal lanterns, as well as several light spells cast by Daerith, Fin, Wavedancer, and Anya. It's enough to keep the ship well enough lit that the storm is no worse than it was during the day.

Unfortunately, a little after sunset the Sea Wyvern's luck runs out. As it passes through the waves, ship lurches and comes to a sudden stop, the sound of splintering wood filling the air. She's run aground on Masher Reef, about 25 miles northeast of the island. Everyone on board either falls to the deck or nearly so. Standing, they can see that waves crash against the ship, which leans perilously to port. And all the sailors on board know that unless they can get the ship off the reef soon, wave and wind with smash it to flinders before long.
Daerith makes a Prof(sailor) check to Aid Another for Chanur: 21; success
Berek makes a Prof(sailor) check to Aid Another for Chanur: 11; success
Fin casts Prayer for a +1. Even though this is a short duration spell, I'll let it work. It is a prayer to the Storm God during a storm, after all.
Chanur makes a Prof(sailor) check (DC 30) to get back on course (+5): 31; success, back on course.
Alas, it's not possible to take 10 or 20 on this check.

Chanur makes a Prof(sailor) check (DC 15) to keep from washing or rolling in the first hour: 17, success

Chanur makes a Prof(sailor) check (DC 15) to keep from washing or rolling in the second hour: 15, success

Alas, there was no way to avoid the reef. Still, it's better than heading toward the cliffs.

It's technically a DC 12 Reflex save to stay standing. Feel free to roll it yourself if you want to see if you fell down or not.

"Well I be damned..." Berek mutters as he dawns his manta ray cloak which he will need to further investigate the situation of the reef. Then the valiant Dwarf jumps overboard to see what he can find out.
I'd like to check out how far we're stranded on the reef and whether there might be the possibility to manuallly move the ship and or destroy corall to get the ship back off the reef

Daerith slides two feet to the side as the ship hits the reef, he's screaming over the noise of the storm, "MASHER REEF! I THOUGHT WE CLEARED IT ALREADY!" He curses himself for not directing Chanur to miss the reef, this one he feels is on him, but he doesn't dwell on it. "WE ARE GOING TO CAPSIZE IF WE CANT GET OFF THE REEF!" He looks up at the sails and those in them, he doesn't know if the sails should be pulled up or left, they might help tug the ship off the reef or might help capsize the Wyvern. Daerith's never been in this sort of situation, this is his first long sea voyage, he looks to the Captain for orders.

Then he summons a floating disk, it can work as a life boat, or to ferry tools down to Berek (and presumably Wavedancer) at the reef. "Orbus no magus."
Daerith is out of his depth now, plenty of book learning and excitement but the best course of action now? He doesn't know.

Chanur nearly loses his footing as the ship runs aground. Luckily he is fleet of foot and was holding the wheel helping to keep him standing. The wind howling and the rain drenching the Captain shouts his orders. "Hurry the ship will be crushed if we are not quick! MARI, ANYA, LIRITH FURL THE SAILS! PALAN AND KURT! BEING MOVING AS MUCH WEIGHT TOWARD THE BACK OF THE SHIP AS POSSIBLE! AMELLA GET THE ANCHOR DEPLOYED, WE MAY NEED TO PULL THE SHIP OFF THE REEF. WORK QUICK!"

The captain unties himself and begins to over see the work checking to see if the ship has broken free.

Wavedancer was too occupied with watching the rest of the crew, waiting for somebody to fall overboard, that he wasn't paying any attention to the reef coming up fast...not that he could do anything about it anyway. But when the Sea Wyvern catches hold and stops dead in its sea tracks, Wavedancer is caught mid-step and loses his footing. He slams hard against the railing, nearly flying over the side with the impact. It takes him several long moments before he catches his breath and attempts to stand as the wind was knocked out of him.

Fin is thrown to the floor as the ship finds the reef. He hauls himself up and immediately begins to help in any way he can.

The Defender of Masher Reef: Round 1

Post by Trogdor » Tue Jun 19, 2012 9:56 pm

The Sea Wyvern is stuck on Masher Reef, and it's only a matter of time before it's battered into small pieces by the waves. Chanur and every other sailor on board know that they have to get the ship freed before too long or there's no hope for any of them. So Chanur quickly begins issuing orders. Get the sails down before they push the ship farther on the reef; someone tell the crew below to all move aft, and damn what Avner says about people invading his cabin; start weighing the anchor; start pumping water to the aft tanks, and even overboard if necessary to shift weight aft. And by all that's holy, find the carpenter to see how much water is in the well.

Tavey runs below to get people moving aft. The ladies up top furl the sails, with Mari and Lirith riding the ratlines down to the deck afterward. Amella and Gaed tend the anchor while Konrad and Fin start pumping water. Dolan and Helgar head below to assist Palan and Kurt with the repairs. Wavedancer checks for damage at the fore-peak, as Daerith prepares to assist with repairs from on deck. And Berek dons the cloak of the manta ray and dives overboard to see what he can of the damage from the outside.

Suddenly the water next to the Sea Wyvern churns and a huge serpentine form bursts forth. It is a masher - a worm-like fish that measures thirty feet from tip to tail. Its face is a terrible circular maw of grinding teeth with two beady eyes peering out from the crown if its head. Large spines rise from its sinuous back, shuddering and rattling with menace. Catching everyone by surprise, the masher leaps out of the water before anyone can react, taking half of Lirith Veldirose into its mouth and neatly biting her in two. As the shocked onlookers watch, the bottom half of the unfortunate adventure seeker falls limp to the deck, while the masher falls back into the water with her top half firmly in its maw. After three months of sailing, the Sea Wyvern has finally suffered its first casualty.

Everyone then has a chance to react before this horrible creature strikes again.

Daerith stands there stock still as the rain pounds down around the ship. He watches with a blank face as Lirith is bitten in half. "BY THE GODS!" It only takes a few seconds more before Daerith snaps into action. He can't help move the ship off the reef but he can try and hurt that thing. So he darts forward and down the stairs to both close in on it, and get off the bow. As he moves Torothalion is draw and the weapon bursts into flames that refuse to be doused by the wind or rain. He points the weapon at the Masher and lets a blast of flame snake out from the sword at the large beast without a curse or shout only a strong chanting of his spell. "Igneus manebus inflatus vetorum."

He then realizes just what they are fighting, a Masher, "Beware its poison spines! Stay clear of them and its teeth. This thing EATS coral!"
