Chapter Four - Here There Be Monsters

The first Savage Tide has already touched the mortal world, yet none who live today recall this terrible time of red ruin. It swept over an ancient city, transforming beggar and noble, merchant and thief, resident and visitor, one and all into feral, ravenous fiends. What took the ancients hundreds of years to build came crumbling down in a matter of days. When the final ripples of the tide faded, only ruins remained.

Now, after a thousand years, the hidden architect of the Savage Tide gazes upon new targets. This time, the doom will not be limited to one hapless city. This time, all of civilization is perched on the shore, blissfully ignorant of what the tide is about to bring in.

Chapter Four - Here There Be Monsters

Post by Trogdor » Thu Jun 28, 2012 8:02 pm

For three months, the Sea Wyvern has been making its way east and south from the city of Sasserine to the outpost of Farshore on the Isle of Dread. Throughout this long journey it has encountered pirates, oozes, a giant magical sargasso, and other dangers that have threatened its very survival. But in the end, it was Nature itself that proved the one foe they couldn't beat. A first storm separated them from their consort, the Blue Nixie. Then a second, worse storm ended their journey altogether, casting them onto the northeastern shore of the Isle of Dread, closer to their ultimate destianation than they've ever been before, but still many long miles away from Farshore and the rest they so greatly deserve.

Morning light filters in through the eyes of the survivors of the wreck of the Sea Wyvern, waking them from their uncomfortable rest. The storm has finally subsided, leaving the air clean, if cloyingly hot and humid. As each castaway opens his or her eyes, they see a lonely beach, desolate save for the other survivors and odd pieces of wreackage. A few chests, a boat so badly beaten that it's clear it will never float again, and some odd pieces of wood, no doubt parts of the Sea Wyvern broken away and washed to shore.

Memories of those last furious moments fill everyone's mind. The crash of the ship hitting the rocks; being thrown to the deck and blacking out; coming to in the chaos of people rushing to the boats or jumping overboard; the smashing of the last throes of the storm making everything ten times as difficult. Even those who were in no danger of drowning were in real danger of being dashed to the rocks by the surf. The preparations for abandoning ship were helpful. But in the chaos of the wreck, even that could not save everyone. Some were flung overboard, likely to a watery grave. Others clung to broken spars in the water or worked like madmen to keep the boats upright. In the end, those that made it to shore collapsed from exhaustion, unable even to pull themselves into cover from the rain.

Now it is clearly hours later. The sky is clear and the surf is calm. Everyone is scattered across a long stretch of beach that meets up with jungle about forty feet inland. The Sea Wyvern lies about 200 feet offshore, tilting sideways on some visible rocks, protected by a sandbar from the worst of the surf, but clearly unseaworthy without major repairs, the likes of which those with skill know can't be accomplished with materials on hand. Like it or not, everyone is shipwrecked on the wrong side of the Isle of Dread, with miles of dangerous jungle between them and Farshore.
The adventure assumes that very few of the passengers and crew survive the shipwreck. Given the preparations everyone made, I'll give a everyone a base 40% survival chance with a bonus or a penalty depending upon certain factors.

Chanur opens his eyes and he feels battered and bruised. For as bad as his body feels his soul is even worse. His first command and he lost his ship. Standing up he wobbles and falls to one knee. Looking at who is on the shore he now realizes he lost much of his crew. Sea water and whats left of his last meal comes up emptying his stomach all over the beach. Long after he is empty the "Captain" continues to retch , his guilt trying to pour its way out. Finally his stomach sore he manages back to his feet.

Stumbling around on the beach he starts checking on those on the beach trying to wake them. He kneels down besides Amella checking to make sure she will live. He then stumbles around checking on everyone on the beach before collapsing again. Chanur sits staring out at the wreck of the Sea Wyvern his eyes roiling more than the sea.

Daerith dreams of terrible things, dark monsters, deep waves, and crashing rocks against his skin. He suddenly bursts awake with a scream of primal fear. Then he collapses back on the sand, soaked and water logged. "It wasn't a dream." His first words before he grabs for the cameo that Lavina gave him, reaching for that even before his blade Torothalion. He grabs for that next and finds both where they should be and he is relieved. He's alive and with what matters all else can be replaced. Rolling over to his belly he presses his hands into the sand and stands up slowly, on wobbly legs. The elf glances over and sees the "Captain" is awake. His eyes scan over the other bodies on the beach, most of them alive, a few dead corpses washed ashore or just barely bobbing in the water among eddies and tide pools. "We made it." Rubbing his face he calls to Chanur, "Captain, we need a head count." Then he sees her, The Sea Wyvern battered and broken on the reefs and rocks and he sheds a few tears for the good ship passing them off as just sea water running down from his hair.

Chanur sits staring out at their ship not seeming to hear his friend Daerith.

Berek had been safe in the guise of the manta ray feeling assured while the storm was thrashing the Sea wyvern over him but then everything went black. Now he woke on a beach, soked sandy and an Elf yelling next to him. Something was definetly awry, he rose and looked around seeing many lying on the beach, some dead in the water and ...

the SEA WYVERN... smashed and all but destroyed and there the captain wheeping for his, no their ship.

Fins hears the shouts of his companions nearby, despair and sad urgency filling their voices. At first he wonders if they all died in the storm, before realizing that his throat is too dry and his body too sore to be dead.

The priests eyes open and he slowly clambers to his feet with a sigh. He mumbles quietly to himself, "Not yet, eh? Still more to do."

He slowly shakes his head and ambles over to the remains of the crew. "It seems Procan yet has work for us."

Upon seeing Chanur's face, Fin smiles sadly.

"That's the point of it, captain. Some things are more precious because they don't last; life being chief among them. Do as much with yours as you can. You only get one."

Chanur seems to snap to a moment and looks up at Fin, the spiritual backbone of his companions. "They depended on me Fin, trust me and I killed them..." his voice trailing off as he starts to stare at the wreck of the Wyvern once more.

Fin frowns at this, reaching out and grabbing Chanur's shoulder with one hand.

"You had no greater hand in their deaths than I did. That's the way of the world. It is how Procan teaches us. Storms such as that are beautiful and terrible, completely without restraint and will take the young and the old alike, the good and the bad, the deserving and the not. The storm cares not for those it takes, as with so many other things in life.

"Misery will be brought to you and those around you by course of nature through no fault of anyone's. You must push through in order to make of your life what you wish it to be. Show strength of character and faith in Procan and he will help you in ways you might not have imagined. Aside from this, you must always remember: the world around you cares not for good or evil, it simply is. If you want the world to be good, you must make it so. It'd be a good start to put the wreck behind us and resume your responsibilities, Captain."

Chanur listens to Fin and he isn't sure why but it makes him feel better. He stands up and brushes himself off. Looks at Berek and is a bit embarrassed. "We need to check the beach area for anything that might have survived the crash. We need supplies." Putting his hand on Fin's shoulder he quietly says "Thanks Fin."
