Chapter Five - A Trip to the Tar Pits

The first Savage Tide has already touched the mortal world, yet none who live today recall this terrible time of red ruin. It swept over an ancient city, transforming beggar and noble, merchant and thief, resident and visitor, one and all into feral, ravenous fiends. What took the ancients hundreds of years to build came crumbling down in a matter of days. When the final ripples of the tide faded, only ruins remained.

Now, after a thousand years, the hidden architect of the Savage Tide gazes upon new targets. This time, the doom will not be limited to one hapless city. This time, all of civilization is perched on the shore, blissfully ignorant of what the tide is about to bring in.

Chapter Five - A Trip to the Tar Pits

Post by Trogdor » Sat Feb 15, 2014 12:16 am

The evening after the battle is a restful. Berek, Chanur, and Amella seek out the town's only tavern - the Last Coconut. The place is run by a charismatic and gregarious man named Malfus Fairwind, who often plays the mandolin and sings for the patrons' entertainment. There are a few local beers of moderate taste. But the true drinks of worth are made with locally distilled liquors flavored with tropical fruits. The newcomers to town are greeted with enthusiasm, and find themselves the recipients of many free drinks during the course of the night.

Daerith and Lavinia retire to the upstairs lounge, where they spend most of the evening catching up in detail regarding what has happened in the past several weeks. By evening's end, the elf suggests that the lady would be safer with him guarding her throughout the night. She replies with a heartfelt kiss, but says that she'll take the risk of sleeping alone. Apparently after most of three month apart from Daerith, Lavinia would like to be wooed a bit before she gives everything up.

By morning, matters are decided. The Sea Wyverns will head north to secure the tar pits, while Amella and a hand-picked crew will head north in the captured pirate ship to rescue the castaways from where the Sea Wyvern crashed. Preparations are easily made. A crew for the pirate ship is gathered, and the Sea Wyverns arrange for a fishing boat, the Dawn Mist to take them up to Tanaroa. Soon both groups depart for their separate tasks, pausing only as long as it takes to eat breakfast and have Fin say the necessary prayers to hallow the Farshore Cemetery. As they leave, they can see two large groups of colonists felling some trees for what will become two new watch towers for Farshore.

The trip north on the fishing boat is long, taking almost the entire time from dawn until dusk. But that's still better than the two days it took by canoe, so no one complains. Jeremy Cannisant and his son Frank are capable sailors and good company. They tell the group all about Farshore, and ask many questions about the Sea Wyverns' trip across the Isle of Dread. Still, everyone is happy to see the smoke from the cooking fires of Tanaroa in the fading light of day. The ship pulls into a sheltered cover and drops a small dingy to bring everyone to shore, though it will take more than one trip to move the whole group. The Cannisants will be staying the night in Tanaroa, and will leave in the morning. They have used this trip to carry some trade goods from Farshore that will be traded for some native goods in accordance with a long-standing trade agreement between Farshore and Tanaroa.

The Tanaroans are surprised to see the group so soon again, and are shocked to hear that Farshore was attacked. But they are very pleased when they hear that the Sea Wyverns intend to secure the tar pits from the thunder lizard that has taken it as its new home. They are perfectly willing to give the group a place to stay for the night, knowing that no one in their right mind would willingly set off through the great gates after the sun has gone down.
I'll pause at Tanaroa to see if there's anything you want to do there before moving you to the tar pits.

Oh, and FWIW, Fin casts Hallow on the graveyard before you go.

Daerith is not a little disappointed by Lavina's reticence, absence has made his heart (and his loins) grow fonder, but he respects her wishes, and plans to woo the pants off her. He stays in the manor, in a guest room, and in the morning enjoys breakfast with her and tells her he plans to make sure she becomes mayor. Then before setting off he kisses her, and hurries away before parting again to too much for him.

During the trip Daerith works on the boatmaster and his son, feeling them out, about who they think would be a good mayor for Farshore. He talks up Lavina, and tries to find out who in town is on the fence still, so he knows who to talk to later. Doing his best to be diplomatic he attempts to secure their votes for Lavinia.

At the Tanaroan's village Daerith arrives with open hands, and a few gifts, a dagger of steel he bought in Farshore before leaving, and a sack of iron arrow and spear heads for the tribes hunters. He tells them all about the attack, and warns that the Crimson Pirates if not stopped at Farshore will turn their eyes to taking slaves of the Olamani men, and women both. He lays the groundwork for an alliance between the two settlements, making sure to treat them as equals, and showing great respect to their leaders and their long traditions and heritage here on the Isle of Dread. Truly they must be great warriors to thrive as they do with so many dangers on the Isle.
Diplomacy for votes on the Boatman and Son for Lavina.

Diplomacy on the Olmani to work on the Alliance to have them help us against the Pirates. I would like to spend money on metal weapons as gifts, maybe 100gps worth of steel and iron weapons and tools to grease the wheels. Sheet updated -100gp

Daerith sounds out the fisherman and his son - apparently fifteen is old enough to vote in this election. Both are as-yet undecided about the election. He spends several hours with the two of them talking about Lavinia, what kind of a person she is, how she was clever enough to bring her house out of possible ruin, how she never even knew about Farshore since her parents died before they could tell her about it, and how truly devoted she is to Farshore now that she knows about it. The two are initially unconvinced. But as the morning turns to afternoon, Daerith is sure he's shifted them over to supporting Lavinia. It's only two votes. But every vote counts.

When they arrive at Tanaroa, he provides the chieftain with gifts of metal. It's not as impressive here as it might be with other natives, since the Tanaroans are in trade relations with Farshore. But the metal weapons and tools are definitely appreciated. Daerith knows that it will take time to convince the Tanaroans to help. But these gifts will lay a good groundwork.
Because I'm a total over-the-top idiot, I have names, professions, and political leanings for all of the residents of Farshore done up in a spreadsheet. (I did this for my table-top game, but it works here too.) So I could tell that the boatman and his son were undecided.

Daerith's Diplomacy check (DC 20/25): 26 (take ten); success - convinces both to vote for Lavinia.

Convincing the Olmans to help is the effort of days, not hours. But the gifts and the initial Diplomacy check will give a bonus.

Wavedancer tries to help Daerith in swaying the father and son team when possible. He tries to nod at all the right times and adds reassurances when he can.

Once landed, he accompanies the Sea Wyverns as they meet with the tribal leaders and offers his assistance at the tar pits. Still heated by Manthalay's ignorance when it comes to the Olmani people, Wavedancer produces his magical dagger and gladly hands it over to the chieftan proclaiming that if the Olmani tribes ever needed help after the support they showed to the Sea Wyverns, Wavedancer would gladly be there to give aid. He tries to discuss the defense of Farshore as well hoping his natural charisma will aid him in convincing the Olmani that if Farshore falls, the rest of the island may well follow.
I wanted to do this earlier but didn't get the chance. This feels like a better time anyway. I'll donate my +2 dagger to the highest ranking person in the tribe in hopes that it'll help our cause to get them to fight with us in defense of Farshore.
Who's the more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?

Had planned to get a holy symbol of Procan at Farshore. Oh well when we return.
As the wander the village Chanur says to Fin"I think I would like to be blessed into the faith of Procan. He has watched over us so many times. I think I would like to make it official just in case this big lizard eats me. I can stand before him with my head held high. I meant to get a symbol of my faith in Farshore but did not have a chance with the attack and our sudden rushing out."

Fin smirks at the captain and shakes his head.

"I can say some flowery words if you like, but the only person that can make your standing official is you. Your soul has likely been in his keeping through action and belief for quite some time. It's my assessment that Procan accepted you as a follower the second you first whispered a prayer in his name and stepped foot on a ship.

"But don't take that as admonishment, lad. The God of the Seas is a mercurial deity, much as are the seas which he commands, and demands the constant reaffirmation of devotion. Your admittance would be pleasing to him."

Fin lets Daerith do the talking, not knowing much about politics he figures the only thing to add would be that Manthalay is an ass, and that is something these men either already know or choose not to see. Likewise in the village he remains quiet, not knowing any Olmani himself.

Chanur nods and grins a little at Fin. "Wise counsel as always Fin." The captain then falls in with Fin and lets Daerith be their envoy.

The Sea Wyverns spend a pleasant evening in Tanaroa. They are not treated as princely as they were a few days ago. Then again, they haven't just wandered out of the jungle on the Isle of Dread either. They are greeted by the chieftain again, though when the gift of a magical dagger is offered, they are introduced to an elderly woman who serves as the village's zombie master. The Tanaroans note, in a matter-of-fact way that their ancestors fight on in the defense of their homes, even after death. The old woman accepts the gift on behalf of the tribe, and seems to approve of the newcomers. But this whole situation shows an odd kind of power-sharing in Tanaroa. The chieftain certainly seems to be in charge in a day-to-day sort of way. But it's clear that even he defers to the village zombie master.

But such are considerations for another day. By morning, everyone is given a meal of fresh fruit and smoked fish, and is escorted to the great gates into the Isle of Dread proper. The Tanaroans are very impressed that the Sea Wyverns would venture back into the jungle so soon after finding their way out. But they are just as clearly thankful that someone is going to take care of the problem at the tar pits.
FWIW, Chanur would probably have to commission a holy symbol to be made. It's not hard, and wouldn't take long. But they probably don't have those lying around. The real question is what would he like it made out of, and how nice will it be?

Berek spends his time in the village of the Tamorans boasting of his skill at slaying Dragons as he calls them and has the tooth of a thunder lizard which he slew on a leather strap around his neck. He's not sure if such boasting might be perceived as arrogant or bragging by the tribesman and woman, but actually he doesn't care all that much and seeing they are rather impressed with what the Sea Wyverns have accomplished up until now they will likely remain impressed once he brings back the head of Tangothowhatever.
Did Daerith just give away a+1 Dagger? I'll need that to cut my way out of a Thunderlizard Stomach...

No! Daerith did not. Chanur did! He's back 2 days and giving away +2 Daggers! Damn man!
Daerith almost considers stopping Chanur, that is a mighty gift, perhaps put to use against their foes, but if it helps bring the Olmani into the fold, so much the better. Daerith tries to learn about the dynamic of the Chieftain-Zombie Master, and keeps an open mind about zombie warriors, for now.

When its time to go he says his farewells politely, and then points into the jungle, "Let's go!" Off they head into the Isle of Dread.
