Act 9 - Chimera Cove

The Age of Magic is ended, Bhall, the Goddess of Fire, has succumbed to the whispers of Agares and fallen into Hell. Her worshipers and creations driven mad, and fire, which has been a powerful ally to man, has turned against him. Each good god was charged with the opposition of an evil god. Bhall was responsible for balancing Mulcarn, the God of Winter. Finding himself unopposed Mulcarn has broken The Compact and moved into Creation.

Creation was on the verge of another open war between the gods, that which they had outlawed with The Compact. To keep that from happening a deal was struck and the gods agreed that one god would enter Creation to challenge Mulcarn. That was Sucellus, the God of Nature. The two gods battled across the face of Creation, entire civilizations still recovering from the Burning Skies that marked the fall of Bhall were destroyed by their power. In the end Sucellus was killed and Mulcarn remained.

The Eternal Winter has begun...

The Dragon - Where To Now

Post by ManWithDoor » Mon Jul 26, 2021 3:10 am

Nate stops for a second, the mental image that Dreams put forth arresting his movement. Trawling for fish, but instead dredging for giant zombies. Disturbing. He shakes his head, and moves forward again. "Agreed, at least on the destination. Finish scouting the western passage here, to make sure we're not missing anything important. Then on to the next island."

The group moves out of the chamber where Poltur lies dead, and finds the western passage accessible now that you've gone around the cave in.

There is a rumble and the caves shake. The strange pool in the chamber where the elemental was floods almost instantly from a crack in the side wall. It feels like a foreshadow. As Dreams looks to a possible exit and seeking options other than the dry waterway of the lower canal west Nate suggests a quick search down that passage. You recall the tale the villages told of the great beast being trapped under the islands, and presumable that means someplace down here. So you quickly press on.

The channel opens into a huge pit at least one hundred feet across. A horizontal geyser of water shoots from a fissure in the far wall thirty feet below the channel to blast into the opposite stone wall and fall into a swirling froth eighty feet below. The water level is rapidly rising. At the bottom of the pit drifts the partially decomposed corpse of an enormous beast!

Dreams says, "We need to figure out if it's dead-dead, in which case we can get out of here, or undead, in which case we need to do something." She gazes at the great corpse with the holy sight of the gods, looking for traces of evil.
Detect evil. If it shows up evil, I think we can safely assume it is undead.

Nate just stares for a long moment, completely overwhelmed by the size of the thing. "Um ... I could try shooting it once, and see if it ... bleeds? Or responds somehow?" He shakes his head. "By the Nine Hells, even if we wanted to fight something that size, how could we? My bullets might as well be mosquito bites." He looks around. "Maybe what we need to do is find a way to stop that water flow? So it can't rise up and snack on our delicious meaty bodies?"

While still focusing, Dreams says to Nate, "You're right. The size of the thing is a bit overwhelming. But enough damage could still overwhelm--and I can still wield the power of the gods against it. But it may be that we want make sure in remains imprisoned rather than slaying it."
I can still use Smite Evil against it.

Torias also casts a quick spell to find out more (Detect magic) and then examines the water pipe to see if they might close it somehow.

Dreams focuses her sight on the beast and it does in fact glow a dark black aura, it is evil and likely undead if she is right. Torias' spell detects magic, not that magic that animates the massive undead dragon turtle known as the Terraken, but something else. Something much smaller below the beast, visible through its rib cage.... he focuses harder and harder and the small device, an amulet or brooch of some sort radiates a enchantment power, magic of controlling powers! A few other auras appear as well as the water splashes down disturbing rubble at the bottom, but those are lesser magics. As the water sprays into the pit you watch as the beast stirs ever so slowly. Its been trapped here for ages, but in minutes the pit will be full of water and it will swim up into the channel you are now standing in. If that channel fills the beast will be free to swim down to the blockage, where it seems likely it will be able to dig free eventually to terrorize the free peoples along the coast once more.

Dreams says, "Well, it's pretty clearly already animated. I can use the power of the gods not only to strengthen my attacks against it, but also possibly to entangle it. But that's a strategy for delaying it." She looks around. "Does anyone have a way to cause a cave-in or something?"

"There is some sort of amulet on it! Maybe if we can remove or destroy that..." Torias points out the spot where he sensed it. "I think we cannot hope to kill this beast....."
