Act 9 - Chimera Cove

The Age of Magic is ended, Bhall, the Goddess of Fire, has succumbed to the whispers of Agares and fallen into Hell. Her worshipers and creations driven mad, and fire, which has been a powerful ally to man, has turned against him. Each good god was charged with the opposition of an evil god. Bhall was responsible for balancing Mulcarn, the God of Winter. Finding himself unopposed Mulcarn has broken The Compact and moved into Creation.

Creation was on the verge of another open war between the gods, that which they had outlawed with The Compact. To keep that from happening a deal was struck and the gods agreed that one god would enter Creation to challenge Mulcarn. That was Sucellus, the God of Nature. The two gods battled across the face of Creation, entire civilizations still recovering from the Burning Skies that marked the fall of Bhall were destroyed by their power. In the end Sucellus was killed and Mulcarn remained.

The Eternal Winter has begun...

"That's a stroke of luck," says Dreams. "If I enrage and distract it by engaging it in combat, perhaps it will come to the surface and you two can remove the amulet while I fight it?"

The former soldier pats his trusty Musket. "My first thought would be to get close enough to try to shoot the thing. If I can shatter that amulet or whatever, hopefully the animation will cease. Personally I'm still a fan of searching for a way to stop the well from filling up, but if we have to engage at least we now have a target to try to take out."

The skeleton turtle dragon thing shifts, and you realize the amulet is on the bottom of the pit below the beast. Still it seems the key, you debate a moment on tactics, distract it, while someone goes to the amulet maybe, just maybe that will be enough.

Then a ghostly form steps from the far wall! It is the ghost of Pelastour, the man first responsible for trapping the beast here and saving the coast. His great grandson lies dead by your hands! Great another foe?

He floats across the gap of the pit and hovers just above the scene. "You must stop the Terraken! The amulet, yes, my old amulet! It is the key! QUICKLY! YOU MUST STOP IT!"

You realize in the few moments you've spent debating the water has now filled the pit by a third, and soon, far too soon it will be free. Nate is well within range, and a brave leap into the water would put you atop the rising creature! Its only some 50ish feet below you now, the pits bottom some 80.

Dreams shouts, "I'll distract the monster! You two get the amulet!" She leaps onto the back of the turtle, drawing her sword and shouting, "Junil and Lugus guide my hand!" as she attempts to plunge her sword into a vulnerable spot.
Oh, what the hell ...

Time seems to slow down for Nate, as the realization of what he must do comes upon him. His mind harkens back to his younger years, truly not that long ago. When he had joined the army, he was filled with notions of duty and service to Icatia. That what he did would have meaning, that he could do his part to keep the world together. But those days are cold memories, as cold as the Eternal Winter. But as he gazes into the turbulent water below, a spark of that feeling ignites in his core. He may not be able to save Icatia, he may not be able to save the world from Winter. But right here, and right now, he can make a difference.

He puts away his musket within the extradimensional spaces of his bandolier, and undoes the buckle of his sword belt, letting his burdensome rapier fall to the ground. The alchemically treated leaves and strips of darkwood that make up his armor will not hinder him, a fact for which he is grateful that he invested so much of his savings in such a remarkable feat of magical know-how. He is not a skilled swimmer, but in this moment all he needs to do is fall into the water below and sink down to the Amulet. If he can even temporarily stop the Beast, drowning will be a small price to pay.

With a small smile, he steps up to the edge, looks down at his fate, steps off, and falls into the roiling depths.

The Oubliette: Dragon Turtle Round 1

Post by Vardaen » Mon Dec 06, 2021 2:59 pm

Over the edge leaps Dreams, and Nate! Both plunging headlong into death and danger. Dreams crashes on the back of the undead dragon turtle, her wail and battle cry echoes through the great chamber louder than expected. Her blade smites the spine of the beast causing it to lash about and thrash among the water.

At the edge of the pit stands Torias, the dwarven cleric, whos hands are weaving to bring about a spell to cast. He's summoning a creature, his most powerful of prayers, the shimmering form of something is taking shape in the water near to the turtle, another target, another distraction even as Nate acts.

Nate, like a jackknife, cuts a narrow profile down the side of the shaft with a *splunk* into the water and plummets to the bottom. The great beast hardly even notices him. He is deep within the water now and kicking as hard as he might to get to the bottom. Turns out he doesn't sink as easily as he hoped, but he's moving now as quick as he can, the shimmer of the amulet just visible in the dark water deep below.

The great beast thrashes about, attempting to dislodge Dreams from its back, but it can't, not yet, so it crashes up against the wall like a bear scratching its back on a tree and the elven warrior is crushed between bone and stone and screams in pain but manages, by the Grace of Junil to hold on to her blade which is imbedded in the things spine like a handle for her.

Dreams whispers a prayer to Junil and Lugus, then tries to drive the blade deeper into the undead dragon turtle. As she does so, heavenly flames wreath the turtle, constraining it in its movement.
Drive the blade deeper in, if possible. I assume that counts as an attack.

Nate continues to hold his breath, kicking to get down faster, his ears complaining as the pressure increases the deeper he goes. His eyes lock on the glittering amulet, the most important thing to focus on in the moment.

Torias contols his creature, making it swim around the turtle's head to distract it.

Dreams cries out a prayer and a holy flame wreaths the beast limiting its movement, and making sure that Nate down blow is free from its attention. Dreams drives her blade deeper into the bone, but she can tell that these attacks are only minor wounds to such a massive creature. Torias's summons appears now fully formed and draws the ire and bite of the undead beast.

Nate kicks and now deep the dark water can see the glowing amulet, he puts his hand on it, and can feel the power in it, but he's nearly out of breath.

The Dragon Turtle's fin reaches up and bats Dreams up side the head, she's bleeding now from her ears and mouth, and may need to see a dentist after this as she spits out a bloody clump from her mouth. Another strike like that, another crush against the wall, and Dreams will be only a memory to the others as she's on her last moments of life now. This beast is no joke, and clearly there was little hope of taking it on toe to toe but she's doing her job.

Nate kicks off off the ground and is moving upwards. He is nearly back to the surface....
