Act 9 - Chimera Cove

The Age of Magic is ended, Bhall, the Goddess of Fire, has succumbed to the whispers of Agares and fallen into Hell. Her worshipers and creations driven mad, and fire, which has been a powerful ally to man, has turned against him. Each good god was charged with the opposition of an evil god. Bhall was responsible for balancing Mulcarn, the God of Winter. Finding himself unopposed Mulcarn has broken The Compact and moved into Creation.

Creation was on the verge of another open war between the gods, that which they had outlawed with The Compact. To keep that from happening a deal was struck and the gods agreed that one god would enter Creation to challenge Mulcarn. That was Sucellus, the God of Nature. The two gods battled across the face of Creation, entire civilizations still recovering from the Burning Skies that marked the fall of Bhall were destroyed by their power. In the end Sucellus was killed and Mulcarn remained.

The Eternal Winter has begun...

Nate wasn't caught by complete surprise, but he wasn't expecting a ton of tentacles to suddenly burst out of the water, waving at them in a very non-friendly manner! The gunslinger already had his weapon ready, so he lets off a trio of bullet barrages at one of the slimy arms.
Can I stay Prone and shoot without penalty? If not, I'll stand up for my firing.

Lineos draws his sword, deeply wishing that he was wearing his armor currently, he takes his stance and attacks the tentacle in front of him.

Prone
The character is lying on the ground. A prone attacker has a –4 penalty on melee attack rolls and cannot use a ranged weapon (except for a crossbow). A prone defender gains a +4 bonus to Armor Class against ranged attacks, but takes a –4 penalty to AC against melee attacks.

Standing up is a move-equivalent action that provokes an attack of opportunity.

I think a firearm is close enough to a crossbow to allow the 0 penalty as if it was a crossbow. So Yes, Nate can kneel/prone and attack.

Fighting in a small boat is difficult, even in calm waters. Anyone standing in a boat is effectively balancing, which means they are flat-footed unless they have at least 5 ranks in Balance or Profession (sailor). Anyone who takes damage while standing must make a DC 10 Balance check to remain standing. An alternative to the Balance checks is to fight while prone, although this carries the usual –4 penalty to melee attacks.

Prone = Blue Boarder
Grappling = Maroon Boarder
Round 1 Nate 24, Torias 12, Octopus 11, Dreams 10, Lineos 9

Round 2 Nate 24, Torias 12, Octopus 11, Dreams 10, Lineos 9

Nate takes aim as the massive squid thing moves under the boat. The moment it erupts from the water he unloads into it. The weapon blows the top of the tentacle clean off spraying blood and goo all over. However the weapon isn't designed for water, and the salt water and blood spray clogs up the action of the musket and causes Nate no end of trouble now!

Torias shouts at the thing, it doesn't listen of course, but the dwarf fires down through the long depth two rays that strike the massive body of the Hand of the Deep. They give it pause, the whole thing seems to shudder, but it fights on from the depths.

The long arms reach up and out and lash about. Torias ducks one arm of the beast as it slaps the water nearby, but as a second reaches out he's plucked from the deck of the boat and now dangles over the water even as he's squeezed and he can feel paralytic poison attempting to creep into his body. He resists that for now, but dangles out over the water.

Nate and Lineos both avoid separate tentacles that strike at them. Nate is crouched down prone, while Lineos nimble jumps up and about. Both are luckier than they realize.

Its Dream's turn now, and two tentacles slam into the Paladin at the bow. She is stout and strong, and as she's certain the first blow breaks a rib she holds her ground refusing to fall, refusing to give into the poison coating her shoulder, and as the arm around to wrap her she shoves it clear. The second has about the same effect, she's knocked bout and bruised, and this time topples to the deck of the catboat prone, but manages to squirm out from under the grabbing appendage preventing herself from being grabbed.

The last of the tentacles cracks against the side of the boat sending boards flying about at the stern.

Lineos, blade in hand slides with it with a powerful arc into the tentacle near him. The blade slices through the thing hacking the top 2 thirds of it clean off. It retreats below the surface of the water blood clouding the sea. He has to catch his balance before he can make a second swing unfortunately.

"Torias!" Dreams shouts in alarm, but there's nothing she can do from where she's standing. Instead, she throws back her head and lets out an ear-splitting wail of grief and rage, to strengthen her own and the others' resolve. She stands up, draws her sword and hacks away at the nearest tentacle.
Swift Action: Battle Cry
Move Action: Stand fron Prone.
Free Action (Quickdraw): Draw elven curve blade
Standard action: Attack vs. tentacle #4. Power attack.

"I'm doing great, really great." Torias yells down. "Never been better." Then he realizes he is still holding on to his axe, and hacks at the tentacle holding him.

Lineos you jumped he gun, you should wait till have the Octopus acts to post for Round 2
Dreams cries out from the decking of the boat, she flips up to her feet as she draws her blade. At that moment one of the tentacles collides with her side, and she manages to duck under its grabbing tip. Her curved blade hacks into the side of the large arm and opens up a huge gash but does not lop it in half yet.

Torias struggles calling out...

Nate slams the palm of his hand sharply against the side of the rifle, trying to clear water and such out of the mechanism. No dice. Well, it hasn't fully jammed yet, so he'll keep chancing things until it does. Seeing Torias get into a bit of a mess, he flips over, using his heels to secure his position in the boat. He aims as best he can in this chaos, then begins firing again.
Same full firing pattern, this time targeting #7. Trying to free Torias.

Hand of the Deep: Round 2-3

Post by Vardaen » Wed Feb 05, 2020 3:36 pm

Round 2 Nate 24, Torias 12, Octopus 11, Dreams 10, Lineos 9

Round 3 Nate 24, Torias 12, Octopus 11, Dreams 10, Lineos 9

Things are happening so fast, plans for attacks are thwarted. Nate spins in the boat and lines up a shot banging on the side of the gun. He fires the Icaitan Musket and puts a duo of bullets through the arm of a tentacle ripping it half apart. That tentacle then lets go of Torias who is promptly dropped into the sea water like a dwarf sinker. He go down some 8 feet before resurfacing and swimming one handed to the side of the boat, the other hand holding the Glint Axe.

Before he can recover the five remaning arms of the massive squid monster attack again. Nate and dreams both manage to duck under an attack, while Lineos is hit and grabbed up -- plucked from the boat to dangle over the side bruised lightly. Torias is about to call out when he too is grappled and grabbed, this time instead of going up, he's pulled DOWN under the water and he can see the maw of the beast below as he holds his breath.

Dreams and Lineos, moments before Nate and Torias...
Some actions have voided others.

Combat Round 2
Nate: Full Attack #7: 14 Miss, 18 Hit, 22 Hit = 47 - 5 DR = 42 = DEAD
Torias: Dropped into Water: Swim: 10 Success
#1: Attack Nate 13 Miss
#2 Attack Lineos 22 Hit for 3 + Poison 25 Success + Grab 31 vs 28 Grappling Lineos
#4: Attak Dreams 14
#5 Attack Torias 25 Hit for 5 + Poison: Fort Save 21 Success, + Grab 36 Success - Grappling Torias
#8 Attack Boat 6 Dmg
