Book 1: Act 1 - Oleg's Tradepost

Post by Vardaen » Thu Jul 08, 2010 11:09 pm

Image Be it so known that the bearer of this charter has been charged by the Swordlords of Restov, acting upon the greater good and authority vested within them by the office of the Regent of the Dragonscale Throne, has granted the right of exploration and travel within the wilderness region known as the Greenbelt. Exploration should be limited to an area no further than thirty-six miles east and west and sixty miles south of Oleg's Trading Post. The carrier of this charter should also strive against banditry and other unlawful behavior to be encountered. The punishment for unrepentant banditry remains, as always, execution by swod or rope. So witnessed on this 24th day of Gozran, under watchful eye of the Lordship of Restov and authority graned by Lord Noleski Surtova, current Regent of the Dragonscale Throne.

1 Desnas, 4708 AR, Late Spring

Two miles outside Oleg's Trading Post.

Your stay in Rostov was short and not very eventful. The Lord Mayor was true to his word and within an hour you were visisted by his loyal subject a halfling named Jamroar Falconsflight. The young halfing carried with him the charter for the group sealed with the Lord Mayor's personal seal and authorizing you to seek your destiny in the southwest region known as the Greenbelt.

It didn't take long for Kullok and Jorina to split from the group and seek a warm dry play where the sick young woman could find healing in peace, healing that Kullok couldn't manage. The two have promised to catch up with you, and Kullok's tone almost made it sound like a threat. A good nights sleep, some restock of supplies, and you've set out once again from Rostov traveling back through Nivakta's Crossing along the South Rostland Road. It takes about a week to make the trip from Rostov to the semi-tamed lands north of the Greenbelt and your first stop Oleg's Trading Post.

The rain of spring has let up and the last three days have been cool and breezy and thank Erastil dry, making travel pleasant and enjoyable. Your small group of three has been bolsterd by the fourth, and so far Jamroar hasn't been too overly talkative (for a halfling) sizing up in his new partners and showing a bit of a shy side, but hopefully all that will change.

In the distance a few miles ahead you can spy the old fort that is now Oleg's Trading Post. The land around is mostly rolling plains that lead up to the thick forests and hilly regions to the south known as Narlmarches and the Kamelands respectively. The old road will take you right to the trading post and its ten foot high wooden palisade, and to your destiny.
Welcome to Act 1 - Stolen Lands!

We say good-bye for a bit to Kullok and Jorina who remain in Rostov seeking healing for Jorina's illness. We also say hello to Jamroar the Halfling helper that Lord Sellemius has sent along with you.

He has already given over your charter, and the text of it is the opening of this post! Please do some getting to know RP with the new guy as you travel the last few miles until you reach the Trade Post that we'll use as your base of opperations in the area for now.

Everyone has 3 days of rations left, or gained, at this point. I'll update your sheets.

"So that's our new home-away-from-home?" Cal asks, looking out at the fort that is the center of Oleg's Trading Post. He glances over at Jamroar. "You know anything more about it? Is the eponymous Oleg still a going concern?"

Looking around him at two halflings and a gnome, the sorcerer tries to quell the slightly unnatural feeling of being a giant.

The halfling shakes his head. "My first time here, too. I'd say he has to be a fairly significant concern. That Charter of yours would be totally null and void if the bandits managed to burn the place down. At least by some interpretations."

Cal nods, "I was just curious whether we could expect to meet a guy named Oleg or whether he's long gone and his name's all that's left. Never been here either and didn't know how long the trading post has been here."

Gazing at his surroundings in an approving manor, Tusker finds the path to the Trading post to be sufficiently rural for his tastes.

"A suitable place to make a waymark, I'd say"

Producing a piece of chalk, Tusker chooses an out of the way tree and traces a simple glyph on it the size of his outstretched hand

Image

Producing a sheet of parchment, the doodling map tinkerer sketches the same glyph in charcoal, and labels it "Oleg's trading post" with a tiny arrow pointing in the cardinal direction of the structure in the distance. Blowing gently to remove any excess dust, young Slough replaces the parchment and his writing instruments into his water proof bag.

"Well, it's official, this is where we start. Our first and only waypoint!"

Mr. Dawes fails to share the enthusiasm of Tusker, however, longing for the fattening scraps of civilization that the past few days have provided him. A small grunt escapes the small boar as he trundles along slightly behind the two-leggers.

"As good a place as any," Cal agrees. "And I hope, by the gods, that it's the first of many."

In their travels south Lem enjoys the comany of another halfling although sadly this one does not proove all too talkative. None the less Lem decides that sharing is caring and thus let's his new found friend be part of the trial and tirbulations of his young and rough life, a life that the young servant apparently did not need to share. During their travels the skilled yong halfling hunter is more than able to provide his companions with plenty of fresh mushrooms, game and fish eventhough his cooking is not as exquisite as one might hope.
As he now stands before the high walls of Oleg's trading post he loks at the others before stating plainly. "Hey why don't we go and pay Oleg a visit. He might have some things we can use. Perhaps he has a cookbook some nails and a hammer!"

Jamroar is also not terribly talkative, but he does get a full account of Lem's escape from slavery. He's in the business of freeing slaves... or at least he was, and anything that he can learn of how other people got out might come in handy.

Overlooking the trading post, he nods. "At the very least, it'll be good to know whats available. It's the only civilization in sight. Gotta check it out, right?"

Mr Dawes snuffles through the detritus and undergrowth of the forest floor, turning up the soft loam in search of a few tuberous roots.
Mr. Dawes makes a survival check for finding food
(10:38:39 AM) MUSH: +ROLL: Pyg@IRC rolls 1d20 and the dice show: 13
for a total of... 18!

Of course, this is all just for window dressing... I'm sure we've got eats a plenty.

Can this count as part of Tusker Training Mr. dawes to "WORK" as a learned trick?
Taking any acorns or grubs found along the way as a finders fee, the little hog leaves any large starchy roots he finds atop the soil.

Tusker Slough nods at Lem's suggestion "I wonder what they've got to trade... and how much of it is crooked. If this is a land of bandits, then a trader's shelves probably see the same goods more than once." Eyeing the outpost with a scrutinizing eye... Slough nods resolutely "Still, a trader must trade, and he's probably wise concerning who to avoid... and if he knows he'll get our custom, perhaps there's an ally to be made!"

"With luck," Cal offers, "Oleg has deals with the government of Brevony and is more honest than most." Not that Oleg was likely to be totally honest. What trader was? But more honest than most was something they could hope for.

"This is the only place we're likely to be able to get real supplies in the Stolen Lands. And it's the place we have to meet our contact with the mayor. We'd best make nice with the locals here."
