Book 1: Act 3 - Second Explore of the Greenbelt

Post by Vardaen » Thu Jun 30, 2011 10:50 pm

Image Be it so known that the bearer of this charter has been charged by the Swordlords of Restov, acting upon the greater good and authority vested within them by the office of the Regent of the Dragonscale Throne, has granted the right of exploration and travel within the wilderness region known as the Greenbelt. Exploration should be limited to an area no further than thirty-six miles east and west and sixty miles south of Oleg's Trading Post. The carrier of this charter should also strive against banditry and other unlawful behavior to be encountered. The punishment for unrepentant banditry remains, as always, execution by swod or rope.

So witnessed on this 24th day of Gozran, under watchful eye of the Lordship of Restov and authority graned by Lord Noleski Surtova, current Regent of the Dragonscale Throne.

21 Desnas, 4708 AR, Late Spring

The charter members of the group have now been out into the Greenbelt for one long explore taking up over a tenday. The venture took them south and east into the region on the nearside of the rivers Thorn and Shrike. During this trip they found and defeated a small bandit camp belonging to the Stag Lord but were not yet stong enough to tackle the Stag Lord himself. Further exploration of the Greenbelt turned up a war between the local critters of the region, the Mites and the Kobolds. Siding with the Kobolds the heroes soundly defeated the Mites slaying them to the last including their centipede breeding facility. After returning to the Kobolds with their sacred statue the group joined the Chieftain Sootscale in overthrowing the evil Shaman Tartuk and returned control of the tribe to the Chieftain. In the process of this they discovered the Kobold Shaman Tartuk was no Kobold at all but a reincarnated gnome with evil in his heart and was the cause of all the battles between the Kobolds and the Mite.

The heroes discovered many others things, including an undead bridge keeper, a gold mine, treasure cache, and other less than hospitable beasties in the region. Returning to Oleg's to resupply and to report in the heroes delieved Svetlana's wedding ring to a more than gratefull Oleg and earned a sizable reward for it.

Leaving a few letters withe Kesten Garress, and feasting with Oleg, Svetlana and Father Jhod, the group has resupplied and readied itself for a second long trip into the Greenbelt, this time into the western parts.

Gathered now after a long and hearty breakfast, Calanthir, Lem "Bearslayer" Lillywag, Arenhal the Bugkiller, and Valen stand at the gate out of the trade post. Horses saddled and readied by Colban, food stocked and stuffed in pouches, and the trade post inhabitants out to say good-bye, the heroes wave their final 'thank you' and good-bye as they mount up ready to fullfill their Charter from the Swordlords of Rostov.
Welcome to the next act! This act will, I suspect, be mostly you guys exploring the Greenbelt, doing side quests, and leveling up in anticipation of attacking the Stag Lord's hideout.

The previous thread is still open, but will quickly close as we resolve the last lingering RP "last night".

As he settles into Paladin's saddle, Corwin circling overhead, Cal gives a nod to Oleg and Svetlana and a salute to Kesten and Father Jhod. "We'll head west to the river this time," he tells them, "to see if we can get a halfway decent map of the local area up to the river. We'll keep a lookout for temples, fugitives, boars, and everything else people want us to find." Then he waves at the group and turns his horse. "Expect us in about a week or so, maybe as long as two."
I say we explore B4-B3-C4 (assuming the river lets us into B3 and C4, but not any farther west). We can then cross the river at D4 into D3, and work NW from there. Eventually we can get C5 on our way back to Oleg's

Lem Lillywag is ready and eager to get back into the woods. While he enjoins the time at Oleg's mostly for Ale and Svetlana's cooking being in human places for too long at a time is never good for a halfling. The wilds on the other hand are always an adventure. As he sits atop his horse. He nods to Calanthir.
"Good idea mister magic. But let's not rush things so much I'd like to take some time to look out for moonradishes and what's the stuff called the hermit is looking for?"

"Fang berries," Cal replies. "Don't worry, we'll keep an eye out for all those things. This is as much a survey mission as anything else, after all."

Arenhal sits astride his horse, nodding in agreement with Cal as well. "I'm not sure the Stag Lord would call what we've done so far surveying. If we can keep the pressure up, perhaps we can draw him, or more of his bandits out."
"I will always return."

"Let's not forget," Cal adds, "our charter is to explore this land as much as to make it safe."

The group rides out of Oleg's Tradepost and turns west. Calanthir has a strong opinion on which way to go and so far no one has debated the matter. There are half a dozen items on the todo list, but nothing is being forgotten or left off. So west out of the tradepost it is.

The trip is on flat fields all a bit soggy still from the spring rains. The horses are all in good shape the spider poison that was affecting Paladin had long ago worn off. A days's ride though the planes lands the party in the edge of the Narlmarches and the woods that from the western boarder of the land. The region is safe of trouble, and only a trapper's camp, old and unused recently is uncovered. So camping for the night in the eves of the trees the group continues to talk about their charter and the various goals.

** Desnus 22nd, 4708 AR, Late Spring, The Narlmarches west of Oleg's **

For now it seems that Cal's plan is a sound one, and so when morning arrives the quartet heads into the woods proper. The going is much slower, the thick forest, low branches, and brambles and thorn bushes that give the nearby river its name all cause travel to be less than optimal.

As the group is exploring into the forest you turn onto a deer run. The narrow path is better than nothing but apparently isn't without danger. There is a sudden and resounding *SNAP-CRACK* Followed by the scream of a horse so loud that Lem reaches to cover his ears from it. Calanthir is thrown from the back of Paladin and lands in the bush as the horse struggles against a massive iron bear trap that its stepped into! The horse's leg is likely broken, its flesh managed, and blood is pouring from the wound. Screaming and bucking against the bear trap the horse topples to the ground kicking and shaking its head in wild panic at the pain!

There is a cumulative 20% per hour chance you walk into a bear trap: Rolled 16 on the first hour. Then I rolled 1d4 randomly and got Cal. This poor horse! First spider poison now bear traps.

"Without missing a beat, Cal picks himself up and quickly casts a spell that bathes the horse in shimmering lights, hoping to stun it for a few moments to let Valan treat it. "This won't last long," he says, "Can you do something, Valan, or should I use a potion?"
Cast Color Spray over Paladin to try and knock him unconscious. Then either let Valan cure him or use a potion of CLW. Not that 1d8+1 will do a lot vs 26 points of damage. But it's a start.

Also, are still in the same square as Oleg's? It looks that way on the map.

Hitting the dirt and landing with a thump and a roll Calanthir doesn't miss a beat however. He turns his hands into a funnel and sprays his horse with a blinding collection of magical color that overwhelms the equine's senses. The horse goes limp, knocked out for a few moments thanks to Cal's spell. That's a prefect opening for Valen or anyone to try and help the horse who's leg is stuck in the bear trap.
I forgot the ride check for Cal = 21 Success no damage from the fall.

Color Spray: Fort Save "1" FAIL! Hey wow, Erastil protects.

Trog its 12 damage, not 26. FYI

"Someone try and pry that trap off his leg," Cal calls out, knowing full well his strength won't be up to the task.
