Book 2: Act 1 - Words of the Wise

It is the year 2946 of the Third Age, and the lands east of the Misty Mountains are astir. From the cloud-shrouded peaks above the High Pass to the spider-infested gloom of the forest of Mirkwood, paths long-deserted are trodden once again. Busy merchants carry their wares to new markets, messengers bring tidings from foreign realms, and kings send forth armed men to extend their influence and the rule of law. Some say that a new age of freedom has begun, a time for adventure and great deeds to reclaim glories lost in long centuries of oppression and decline.

But adventures are not really things that people go out and look for. They are dangerous and rarely end well. While it is true that a handful of valiant individuals set out to make their mark on the world, for others it seems that adventure chooses them, as though it is the path they are fated to tread. They are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers, and when they return successful, they call them heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names...

With the orc nearly on top of him, Aerth is forced to drop his bow and take up his axe. The half-elf slips it off his back, and with a great doublehanded swing, he tries to take off the head of the creature before him.

Varuthil watches in satisfaction as the orc goes down with her arrow in its eye, then coldly and methodically looses another at another wounded orc.

Attack on Woodland Hall: Round 4

Post by Vardaen » Thu Jul 10, 2014 6:01 pm

Round 4 Aerth, Varuthil,. Wren, Borir, Pipkin, Orcs

Stances:
Borir & Aerth: Close Combat
Var, Wren, Pip: Rearward
Aerth is forced to drop his bow into the dirt and dust of the road. His long halfed woodsman axe springs into his hands. With a strong double handed swing it slams it into the armor of the orc knocking the thing backwards, renting its armor, and causing a spray of blood to erupt from the wound.

Arrows whizz through the air from the two Wood Elf bows of Varuthil and Wren. Both strike home, landing in flesh and muscle. Varuthil's nearly cripples her target while Wren's punches deep into another's shoulder. The Orcs are howling in rage and pain but look now desperate to fight on.

Borir, flanked by a pair of Orcs, and Pipkin as far as he can be from the middle of the fight....

Borir remains in the thick of it or as he would say, "actually part of the fighting." As the others strike from afar, the dwarf continues to swing his axe at the orcs. Having no allies nearby, he begins to swing recklessly and wildly hoping to strike down the orcs.

Round 4 Aerth, Varuthil,. Wren, Borir, Pipkin, Orcs
Borir, the only one in the fight, as he would put it, is a bit weary, his heavy armor helps protect him from the blades and arrows, but is slows him down. His axe chops recklessly about swinging hither and yon knocking the orc about as he connects with the dwarfish weapon. Blood, black blood that will stain the ground here for months to come, is spilled. The orc lays in the pile at Borir's feet as life drains as freely from it as its black blood does now as well.

Just then a swarm of black velvety butterflies descends out of the trees around one of the spear wielding creatures. So great are they in their suddenness that they blind the orc for a moment as it screams dropping its weapon to the dirt. Hands held to block and swat at the flock of butterflies the beast is ill prepared for what happens next. For a volley of Woodmen arrows from the wall is turned inwards and the orc is pierced in many places by the shafts of the Woodmen. As the body of the beast topples to the ground the butterflies take once more to the air and swirl and swoop like a black cloud racing the wind into the cover of the nearby forest from whence they came.

Pipkin...

Victory at Woodland Hall!

Post by Vardaen » Fri Jul 11, 2014 9:50 pm

Round 4 Round 4 Aerth, Varuthil,. Wren, Borir, Pipkin, Orcs
Pipkin stays put, even rolling about to avoid being hit himself. He fires his little bow at an Orc near Borir and strikes it in the leg. The arrow opens up the artery and the black creature grabs at his leg as it topples over dying of blood loss not long afterwards.

Then the remaining Orcs press. There are only three, but as the one facing Aerth swings at the Half Elf it suddenly throws its weapon to the ground looking terrified at Aerth inexplicably. The creature turns to flee.

At that moment day breaks sudden and unlooked for like a trumpet blast from a golden horn. With the dawn comes Radagast the Brown his staff held high and the sun appears perched atop it. "Dawn comes and with it your doom!" As he utters his words the Orcs break and scatter fleeing back to the gate and wall. All around the cheers of victory go up for with the dawn the enemy is broken. The orcs are routed and as they flee the Woodland Elves of Thranduil's host give chase for many hours killing them and chasing them into the dark corners of Mirkwood so that only a rare few survive the day and slink back into dark places in the night.

The echoing cheers of the Woodmen's victory rings out in Woodland Hall for many long minutes.
Pipkin: Shoot #12: 7+2,3=12 vs 15 Fail + HOPE 5 = 17 Success for 5, DEAD
Orcs: 8 Attack Aerth vs Open Stance: Gandalf Rune!
Orc 9: Charge Borir = 5 Miss
Orc 11: Throw at Pipkin = 7 Miss

The battle has come to an end. It seems that night has lasted but a few hours to you, but now it is dawn, regardless of what you might have thought otherwise to be the time.

Varuthil blinks, surprised so much time has passed. She looks curiously at the wizard, wondering if he somehow managed to manipulate the flow of time. No matter, she thinks to herself. Out loud she says, "Well, we have beat them back, but there are doubtless many wounded. I am going to go see to them." Her voice is as dour as any dwarf's.

Borir leans on his axe as he takes off his helm with his other hand. The dwarf looks exhausted and covered in sweat. His brow is stained with the dust and dirt of the battle combined with a hefty sweat.

The dwarf nods towards Varuthil and only grunts. He then takes off in the opposite direction to inspects the downed orcs.
