Book 2: Act 1 - Words of the Wise

It is the year 2946 of the Third Age, and the lands east of the Misty Mountains are astir. From the cloud-shrouded peaks above the High Pass to the spider-infested gloom of the forest of Mirkwood, paths long-deserted are trodden once again. Busy merchants carry their wares to new markets, messengers bring tidings from foreign realms, and kings send forth armed men to extend their influence and the rule of law. Some say that a new age of freedom has begun, a time for adventure and great deeds to reclaim glories lost in long centuries of oppression and decline.

But adventures are not really things that people go out and look for. They are dangerous and rarely end well. While it is true that a handful of valiant individuals set out to make their mark on the world, for others it seems that adventure chooses them, as though it is the path they are fated to tread. They are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers, and when they return successful, they call them heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names...

Borir states, "Find somewhere to hide. We don't want to spook them off in a different direction. Best for them to not see any of us until they are within range."

"I don't think they mean to push more deer this way. I was given a horn to use if we were separated from the other group, likewise for them."

Wren puts the horn to his mouth and mimics the call he just heard.
Number Two: "You are number six."
Number Six: "I am not a number, I am a free man!"
Number Two: "Muh ha ha ha ha!"

Wren blows on the horn to answer the call. The stag doesn't come running, and no more deer arrive, but you do hear another blast on the horn. This time you hear one hard blast, then a second starts but it is cut off short, and then you hear nothing more.

"That didn't sound right," Pipkin says, a worried look starting to cross his face. "You don't suppose that something happened to the other group, do you?"

The fact that the second sound from the horn was cut off doesn't sit will with the elf. He drops the horn as it dangles from around his neck, "Come on! Something may be wrong."

Wren takes off running in the direction he thinks the sound came from.

Borir rushes along behind Wren. The dwarf runs as fast as he can as he skips over rocks and carries his axe in his hand. Hoping for the best, thoughts of battle and darkness soon begin to creep into his head.

Varuthil's face also shows alarm. She says nothing, but sets off urgently running with the others in the direction of the call of the horn.

"Oh dear, oh dear," Pipkin mutters as he too follows the crowd of people to see what might have gone wrong.

Orc War-band!

Post by Vardaen » Wed Mar 26, 2014 7:41 pm

The company leaves the deer, and moves through the forest toward where the horn blasts had come from. It doesn't take long before the silence of Mirkwood is replaced by the echoing cries of battle! The hounds are snarling and barking in the near distance and you turn to follow the noise of them. The shouts of the men in battle is mixed with more guttural war cries, and at once your heart sinks as you hear the voices of Orcs!

A band of savage goblins is attacking the hunting party on a track in the dense woodland. Amalric stands over his brother Evoric, who is lying unconscious with several black arrows in his chest. He is wounded and desperately trying to keep two snarling Orcs at bay. Heva and Thorismund face three Orcs and are sorely pressed.

Another three Goblin archers are firing steadily from where the track ascends a gentle hill. As you take in the scene, an arrow screams through the air and strikes Thorismund down!
The Orc-band is composed of 5 Orc soldiers and three Goblin archers.

Do you want to charge right in, or do something else?

Can I use "Enemy-lore (Orcs)" for any useful information? Or is that basically like a gather info/knowledge skill?
"Hey!" Borir shouts as the elves and elf-man quickly move past him. He's running as fast as he can, but his legs are nearly half the size of the taller folk.

Once they finally see the situation, Borir shouts "Orcs!" The dwarf doesn't let up as he continues running and now he holds his axe high above his head. "Foul goblins and orcs! Hurry, to battle!" he cries.
