Book 3: Act 1 - Of Leaves and Stewed Hobbit

It is the year 2946 of the Third Age, and the lands east of the Misty Mountains are astir. From the cloud-shrouded peaks above the High Pass to the spider-infested gloom of the forest of Mirkwood, paths long-deserted are trodden once again. Busy merchants carry their wares to new markets, messengers bring tidings from foreign realms, and kings send forth armed men to extend their influence and the rule of law. Some say that a new age of freedom has begun, a time for adventure and great deeds to reclaim glories lost in long centuries of oppression and decline.

But adventures are not really things that people go out and look for. They are dangerous and rarely end well. While it is true that a handful of valiant individuals set out to make their mark on the world, for others it seems that adventure chooses them, as though it is the path they are fated to tread. They are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers, and when they return successful, they call them heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names...

"That would certainly make it easier to guard them," Pipkin agrees. "And make them less able to try anything funny."

Rhosgobel - The Brown Hay

Post by Vardaen » Wed Mar 04, 2015 1:20 am

Finn Heal: 2 - 7,3,5= 15 + Hope 7 = 22 Success
Finn relents and stops playing the tough guy and becomes a good patient for Varuthil and the pair pack his wound with bandages and stop the bleeding. He bound up as good as he's going to get now here in the wild.

The group decides its good for the prisoners to carry the litter, and with rope at work you are soon moving off again south to Rhosgobel where Radagast the Brown lives.

After several hours, and no more appearances of Dagmar or their hounds you spy in the woods a house up ahead...

Radagast the Brown has dwelt here for many years. The name Rhosgobel means Brown Hay or Hedge, referring to the thorny barrier that protects the village from the evils of the forest, and that makes Rhosgobel one of the safer settlements in Mirkwood even when the wizard is not at home.

Radagast is something between an eccentric old great uncle and a living god to the people of Rhosgobel. Most of the time, the wizard is just another old man snoozing in the sun or telling stories of the old days, but everyone in Rhosgobel has seen him performing little magic tricks or healing sick children. Sometimes, though, Radagast puts forth his power, and reminds the Woodmen that he is a wizard of great potency. All of the Woodmen are utterly devoted to him and would do anything for him.

You come to the Brown Hay. This tall hedge surrounds Rhosgobel on three sides. On the fourth side, facing west, the Woodmen built earthen banks and walls of wooden stakes to defend themselves against attack. The hedge bristles with thorns and stinging weeds, and is strong enough to entangle the biggest, nastiest boar or even a Troll so they say. As the Orcs of Dol Guldur discovered on past raids, the hedge is also too wet to burn easily, even in the height of summer.

The only gap in the hedge is a little door, the Hedge-Gate, carved with the image of a grinning face. Radagast made the door himself, and placed a great deal of his magic into it. If any enemy touches the door, it shrieks a warning. Some Woodmen insist that the door has been known to quietly eat smaller Spiders and other trespassers! So Aerth tells you from what Lore he knows.

When he sees the door, Pipkin pulls himself a little taller, clears his throat, steps up and knocks on the door. "Hello the village!" he calls out. "You have some visitors come a calling."

Varuthil calls out, "We have injured, one of whom is Radagast's messenger! And prisoners, who I suspect Radagast himself may well wish to question!"
The thought on using Merciful is that it doesn't just apply to enemies. In addition to saying, "You show forgiveness to enemies," it also says you "are quick to pity, as the hurts or sadness of others deeply move you," which would seem to cover anyone injured.

My suggestion: during the Fellowship phase swap one of your Distinctive Features (not Traits) with Herb-Lore - that will/should grant auto success with most Heal checks.

Borir continues marching alongside the others. As they draw closer to town, he keeps his eyes on the prisoners knowing this will be their last chance to escape.

"Let us get him inside," Aerth says of Beren, "So long as we mean no ill, we shall enter unmolested." He looks at the prisoners as he continues forward, happy to be so close to Rhosgobel and Radagast.

Pipkin stands a bit taller and knocks on the door calling out to those inside. Having been spotted nearing Rhosgobel the Woodmen who call it home are present and open the door when hearing the calls. The men are smiple Woodmen, as you'd find in Woodland Hall or Woodman Town, they bare different heraldry here, but are of the same stock as the rest of the Woodmen, save they live under the care of Radagast the Bown.

"Come in come in. You are welcome here if you bring no evil with you. If you have wounded and sick we will help." The men at the gate, for there are three of them, help you through the hedge-gate and then close and lock it behind you. One of them notices your prisoners and grows concerned, and takes up his spear from the wall, "What is going on?" Another spies Beren and knows the man, "Its Beren, look, and he's sick!"

Your prisoners, bound, make no move to escape with Borir close at hand and now that they are inside the hedge any hope of escape is completely lost to them. Their hounds however are lost outside, left in the woods, and not brought through the gate.

"Aye, Beren found us on the trail. He collapsed almost immediately when we found him." He nods to the prisoners, "These two, with a gang of others, drew weapons on us when we refused to let them take Beren." He takes deep breath, "We must see Radagast at once."

Wren focuses on their bound captives best he can as Aerth has charged him with shooting them should they act up. As they approach the door to Rhosgobel, he all but forgets they have captives as the wonder of the place draws his interest. Wren nods at the three men who have greeted them at the door.
Number Two: "You are number six."
Number Six: "I am not a number, I am a free man!"
Number Two: "Muh ha ha ha ha!"
