Book 5: Act 1 - Those Who Tarry No Longer

It is the year 2946 of the Third Age, and the lands east of the Misty Mountains are astir. From the cloud-shrouded peaks above the High Pass to the spider-infested gloom of the forest of Mirkwood, paths long-deserted are trodden once again. Busy merchants carry their wares to new markets, messengers bring tidings from foreign realms, and kings send forth armed men to extend their influence and the rule of law. Some say that a new age of freedom has begun, a time for adventure and great deeds to reclaim glories lost in long centuries of oppression and decline.

But adventures are not really things that people go out and look for. They are dangerous and rarely end well. While it is true that a handful of valiant individuals set out to make their mark on the world, for others it seems that adventure chooses them, as though it is the path they are fated to tread. They are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers, and when they return successful, they call them heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names...

Book 5: Act 1 - Those Who Tarry No Longer

Post by Vardaen » Thu Jan 14, 2016 8:42 pm

Finn keeps fighting as he breaths in deep after the hit. He continues to press his attack, and strikes the wounded orc in the belly opening up a big wound that sends it toppling over into the dark leaves of Mirkwood never to rise again.

Varuthil lashes out as well, a slender blade, a simple strike that slices a wound across the orc's arm. It won't stop him but it might slow him down. It does slow it down, it turns and strikes, but she lifts her blade and easily parries the attack.

Now out numbered the Orc is flanked by Finn and Varuthil, the pair both land blows that finish off the orc, neither one could clearly claim the killing blow. It drops to the ground dead and for another moment all is silent in Mirkwood.

Tom lays there, arrow in his chest....

Finn moves quickly to Tom to get a gauge of how bad the wound is, though the Lakeman knows little about healing. He looks up at Varuthil. "You know far more than I; tell me how I can assist you."

Finn rushes over to Tom and looks down, he's no healer, still something seems...

"OUCH!"

Tom screams out as he sits up suddenly, the arrow falls away from his chest and he grabs down at himself checking for holes. "That really hurt." He then reaches into his tunic and pulls out a two inch amulet he is wearing, it was a gift from Finn's mother with the markings of the house and Lake-town on it. It has a very large dent in it now where the arrow made impact.

"You're lucky kid!" say Finn, puzzled and frustrated for showing concern when it was unnecessary. "Well, stand up", he adds, grabbing his hand to stand him upright.

Book 5: Act 1 - Those Who Tarry No Longer

Post by Vardaen » Fri Jan 15, 2016 6:41 pm

Tom is pulled up to his feet, "Thanks...I hope that never happens again."

The Lady then holds her hand up, and once more Legolas returns. "We've killed many orcs to the north. Come we need to keep moving." The Lady Irime delays Legolas and speak to him in the ancient elven speech. The two begin to argue for a moment, Legolas showing great concern, but eventually he relents to do as the lady insists.

The Prince turns to the group, "We shall make for the Forest Gate and the Easterly Inn first. But we shall not leave the forest. Varuthil may then find her friends to assist us." The entire group then moves off to the south through the woods.

Before long you hear noises, sounds of screams, human screams, and the cruel laughter of orcs up ahead....
I couldn't resist the classic trope with Tom. :)

I need to see what the party in the other thread does. Depending on their action the next scene will change.

Varuthil is simultaneously relieved and annoyed that Tom is all right--annoyed because of the needless fear he caused. She, however, says nothing.

As they move forward and hear screams, Varuthil turns to Legolas and says, "Your grace, I know our mission is urgent, but those could well be Woodmen, our allies. Surely we should go to their aid." It doesn't look like Varuthil is actually going to wait for Legolas' permission as she knocks an arrow in her bow and prepares to move.

Finn waits, hand upon sword hilt, for Legolas' orders. He looks toward Irime and wonders what she said to the Prince.

Legolas nods, "Agreed, come! To battle."

The Prince leads you all now, on the elf path itself charging west to see what is happening.
You guys will join the other thread after the opening volley, on round one. As a nice surprise! Watch that thread for your heroic intro.

Book 5: Act 1 - Those Who Tarry No Longer

Post by Vardaen » Thu Jan 28, 2016 4:10 pm

The trio raced through the woods to join a battle in progress with a broken caravan and slaughtered men. Orcs and goblins were at work, and after a quick fight they were slain and dispatched. Among those facing the Yrch were three well know folk, Aerth, Borir and Pipkin along with a fourth unknown, Rathar the Wood-goer.

The company has begun to share its introduction, with tensions high between dwarf and elf prince.

Yet as Borir and Legolas banter back and forth everyone's speech comes to a halt. For the Lady Irieme, and her two guards, arrive. Behind them loaded with gear is Tom Lumpyface of Bree.

The Lady Ireme is a radiant beacon of light and sorrow. She is one of the Noldor who sat in Tuna in Valinor and was witness to the Simarils of Feanor. She is starlight on two feet, splendor that breaks all tension and anger among the dwarf and elf prince for the moment. Thousands of years old, she spoke with Manwë and Varda and sat in the light of the Two Trees Telperion and Laurelin. All bickering ends, all conversation stops as all eyes turn on the beauty and the melancholy that is Lady Ireme.
Image She speaks, her voice filled with far away wonder, and a sorrow for the fading world. "Aaye vedui' il'er." She gazes through you, far away, but her eyes met your and then dift on to the West.

Legolas is the first to react, he turns and bows once more, "Lady Ireme, we have cleared the way and have encountered Varuthil's companions that she spoke of."
The game returns from this thread here after a battle and a uniting of the Fellowship.

Finn tells the others that he and Varuthil have volunteered to escort the Lady to the High Pass, where others are to meet them and continue to help her on her journey West. "The Lady has requested that we remain within the eaves of the Forest, as we go south toward the Old Ford. We were hoping you all might be able to join us; we could use the help. Though I expect that once we turn into the Anduin Vale our road shall be far easier than what we've had this last day," he says, smiling.
