Book 5: Act 1 - The Borders of the Forest

It is the year 2946 of the Third Age, and the lands east of the Misty Mountains are astir. From the cloud-shrouded peaks above the High Pass to the spider-infested gloom of the forest of Mirkwood, paths long-deserted are trodden once again. Busy merchants carry their wares to new markets, messengers bring tidings from foreign realms, and kings send forth armed men to extend their influence and the rule of law. Some say that a new age of freedom has begun, a time for adventure and great deeds to reclaim glories lost in long centuries of oppression and decline.

But adventures are not really things that people go out and look for. They are dangerous and rarely end well. While it is true that a handful of valiant individuals set out to make their mark on the world, for others it seems that adventure chooses them, as though it is the path they are fated to tread. They are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers, and when they return successful, they call them heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names...

Aerth forces a smile as Borir and Freir talk about pigs in the field. It was nonsense of course, but Aerth didn't mind. He takes a drink of ale and leans back. "Borir is looking for a soulmate. Pig or oxen, either should do nicely."

Pipkin wanders in from outside with a pipe in his mouth and one hand tucked into his belt. He'd been staying at the inn for the time to take a rest from his adventures. But of late, a Tookish part of him had been crying out for more. He was starting to wonder just how much longer he could stay here.

"Good day to you both," he says to Aerth and Borir. "I hope you're doing well. I say, I never did hear of your last adventure. Was it exciting?"

"Master Brandybuck!" Borir beckons. "Join us. It's about time for your second dinner, is it not?"

"I do believe you're correct," Pipkin says, never one to turn down a meal. "I can always do to fill in the corners a little bit."

Pipkin takes a seat with Borir, Aerth and Freir. Freir, Borir and Pipkin have spent the last many months together working at the Inn the three have become close friends over the time. You sit and eat and drink and share your news about your summer. Aerth was with the Woodmen for a short while, but then the Beornings for much more of it. Borir and Pipkin where here, doing what they do to keep the Inn profitable and open. Borir in particular came into some money during his work over the summer.

You chit chat for a while when a you hear the dog start barking out side. A moment later few patrons arrive. They are men, haggered looking, tired and hungry. They push the door open with force and almost stumble into the Inn, "Water.... please." They don't have much gear with them, which suggests either they haven't ranged far or are missing it.

"Pipkin," Aerth says, "Good to see you. I hope your time here has been well."

Aerth is happy to see the hobbit, who were a breath of fresh air in the harsh Wilderlands. Later, when the men stumble in, Aerth is immediately out of his chair. He frowns and steps forward, scooping up his axe as he does so. "What is it?" he demands.

Borir, who's been at the inn a little longer than Aerth, puts his hand up to block Aerth and his axe. "Take a seat!" The dwarf booms as he steps in front of Aerth and moves towards the counter to fetch the men a pour of water from the water barrel.

"We'll get you some water." The dwarf says, sounding a little more like a shop keeper looking to intice a customer than his usual gruff warrior self.

Borir blocks Aerth from jumping to any conclusions and moves to get the pair of men some water. He pours some water for them and the eagerly drink it down. They look like they have been running for a while. After guzzling it down they start to calm down, one of them turns to Aerth, and mutters a single word no one wants to hear, "Orcs."

Borir takes hold of the man's clothing and pulls his head closer to his own, "Orcs! WHERE! Speak up!" The dwarf motions to Freir, waving him to go and secure the inn and smith.

The man spits out some of the water as he's dwarf-handled. "North of here, not far, we encountered them near the Forest Gate." He gasps for some air as he's still panting from the run, "They killed many of our caravan, and... well then we ran, for hours and hours. I don't know if they followed us."
