Book 6: Act 2 - Men-I-Naurgrim

It is the year 2946 of the Third Age, and the lands east of the Misty Mountains are astir. From the cloud-shrouded peaks above the High Pass to the spider-infested gloom of the forest of Mirkwood, paths long-deserted are trodden once again. Busy merchants carry their wares to new markets, messengers bring tidings from foreign realms, and kings send forth armed men to extend their influence and the rule of law. Some say that a new age of freedom has begun, a time for adventure and great deeds to reclaim glories lost in long centuries of oppression and decline.

But adventures are not really things that people go out and look for. They are dangerous and rarely end well. While it is true that a handful of valiant individuals set out to make their mark on the world, for others it seems that adventure chooses them, as though it is the path they are fated to tread. They are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers, and when they return successful, they call them heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names...

Tauler the Hunter: Round 1

Post by Vardaen » Thu Sep 14, 2017 3:55 pm

Round 1 Fin, Borir, Varuthil, Rathar, Dwarves, Tauler
Finn, blade in change charges forward swinging it about. He hope to break its moral, but such an ancient creature is not so easily frightened by such a little man. Yet Finn does not relent, he has a fire in his eyes that the spider has not seen in a fly in many and age. There is shift in its body posture, it is on edge with so many brave foes about.

An arrow whistles over Finn's head, Varuthil's shot goes right toward the massive spider, but it lifts a long harry leg and knocks the arrow out of the air before it can do it any harm.

"Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu!" Borir leaps forward and with all his might lands a blow on the leg of the great attercop with a truly powerful strike. Any orc would have lost its head, perhaps even a troll or olog too. Yet this thing, this spawn of Ungoliant, is not so easily wounded. The axe sinks into its flesh, but it rears back, and what could have severed the appendage turns out to just be a glancing blow!

Rathar, now with allies, and the dwarves charging in behind Borir...

Tauler the Hunter: Round 2

Post by Vardaen » Tue Sep 19, 2017 5:37 pm

Round 1 Round 1 Finn, Borir, Varuthil, Rathar, Dwarves, Tauler

Round 2 Round 1 Finn, Borir, Varuthil, Rathar, Dwarves, Tauler
Rathar just holds his ground and swings his axe. He glances off the large spider, cracking a bit of its hard exterior joint on the knee of Tauler, but its hardly a wound to write home about. The dwarves race forward, Bofir and Brok in the front, and they swing axes and hammer, and connect with the great spider landing a few minor blows. Nalir, holds back, throwing an axe that misses wide.

Then Tauler rises up and hisses, "You are foolisssh fliessss! You will know my ssstrength!" It rises up to its full height, and the sight of such a creature is awe inspiring. Its belly is actually encrusted with gems here and there, and there is a lack of light around it, it consumes the light about it, drinking it in, like its broodmother did in the First Age in the Light of the Trees. Tauler shakes the dwarve's valour, and reminds the elf Varuthil of so much lost lore and times gone by. Then it strikes Rathar!

The blow of its beak is like a thunderbolt. It snaps down so hard that Rathar is thrown backwards, his chest pierced, and in the wound is pours the foulest of poisons! The Woodman's body goes ridged almost instantly. His limbs burn, his body convulses, and he flops to the ground in a seizure of movements that suddenly end with such a jerk that you fear he is dead! He is as pale as death, and foam drools from his mouth as he lays there. "DIE ALL OF YOU!"
Rathar: Open Stance Attack: Rolled: Feat Die: 1* Success Die: 2,3,2,6t Totaling: 14 with 1 success = Great Success: 13 End - 1 Hate = 3 End

Tauler: Strike Fear: Valour Test: TN16: Finn 21 Success, Rather 21t Success, Borir 20t Success, Varuthil 13 Failure, Dwarves 15,10,6 Failures -- FAILURE MEANS YOU CANNOT SPEND HOPE

Varuthil looses another arrow, while calling out, "We need to rely on our wits, not brute force! We need to look for a weakness!" She wondered if they could find some way to loosen the jewels from Hauler's belly--then he might be vulnerable and unarmored there.

Tauler the Hunter: Round 2

Post by Blubbo_Baggins » Wed Sep 20, 2017 10:20 pm

What happened to my post? I posted already but it is gone!

I wrote: Isn't it possible for Varuthil to spend Hope on the Valour test to avoid becoming afraid? I think it makes sense for her to do that. Muskrat, of course you can object here...
Finn continues to distract Tauler from the fell axes of the Dwarves. Unless there is an opening to the Spider's soft abdomen, their axes would do far better against its legs and armor than his sword.

He stares at the Spider's eyes and jabs his sword toward them. "The light of Elbereth take your sight!"
Intimidate Foe again, use Battle. If Finn gets hit by an attack, and it's a pierce use his bonus die. If the protection fails, use Hope if needed.

Tauler the Hunter: Round 2

Post by Vardaen » Mon Sep 25, 2017 7:44 pm

Round 2 Finn, Borir, Varuthil, Dwarves, Tauler

Round 3 Finn, Borir, Varuthil, Dwarves, Tauler
Finn leaps forward, his blade pointed at the great spider's eyes. It moves however, twists, and now Finn is showing at its belly. He shakes his blade and calls out the name of Elbereth, but the great thing laughs, "There is no light here! Only darkness now!"

Varuthil's arrow whizzes over head and misses the great spider by an arms' length vanishing into the forest.

Borir, with the other dwarves, raises his axe and aims for a leg. He connects, its a light strike, it hits the leg and Tauler howls in pain. Blood sprays the dwarven smith in the face, hot and foul making him choke. He turns away a moment choking as Nalir misses, his stroke only half hearted. Borfi too right in the fray manages to miss, nearly connecting, but he's a bit defensive in his stance. Then Brok Ironfist leaps forward once again and cleaves off the lower half of one of the Tauler's eight legs! Its a strong and powerful blow that the massive spider isn't able to resist or turn away. Brok cheers, "Khazad! Khazad!"

Then he's about to shout a third time when Tualer spins on him, and slams his poisonous beak through Brok's neck! The dwarf is lifted into the air, pierced through the neck from the great spider's beak. Hoisting him up into the air Tauler then begins to laugh, and the opening of his maw, is like a great lever that rips Brok's head from his body! Brok's corpse, split in two, tumbles to the ground causing all that see it to feel woe and shadows setting in on them! "I am unstoppable!" hisses the beast.
