Book 7: Act 1 - A Darkness in the Marshes

It is the year 2946 of the Third Age, and the lands east of the Misty Mountains are astir. From the cloud-shrouded peaks above the High Pass to the spider-infested gloom of the forest of Mirkwood, paths long-deserted are trodden once again. Busy merchants carry their wares to new markets, messengers bring tidings from foreign realms, and kings send forth armed men to extend their influence and the rule of law. Some say that a new age of freedom has begun, a time for adventure and great deeds to reclaim glories lost in long centuries of oppression and decline.

But adventures are not really things that people go out and look for. They are dangerous and rarely end well. While it is true that a handful of valiant individuals set out to make their mark on the world, for others it seems that adventure chooses them, as though it is the path they are fated to tread. They are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers, and when they return successful, they call them heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names...

Panting, Varuthil asks, "Is anyone badly injured? I can treat anyone who is, but those who are still healthy should wake the guards and do a proper search, to make sure no more orcs have snuck in to attack anyone else."

"I'm ok," replies Finn, "I will go." He nods at Varuthil's suggestion, heading off to investigate the presence of orcs elsewhere in the town.

"I am wounded," Glirion informs Varuthil with a grimace. "That orc gave me quite the blow," he added, groaning with pain."

Those able, Finn, Borir, Gerwald, take off into the village, they find that the Woodmen are already rallied, and have killed a handful of snaga archers here and there among the buildings. Hartfast, dressed in his sleeping clothing, and holding a long spear leads a small group who were heading for your quarters to give you aid. "Orcs inside Mountain Hall, these are dark days, dark days!"

Varuthil kneels before Glirion and tends to the other elf's injuries, they are serious, but not beyond the skill of the Wood Elf. Soon Glirion's bleeding is stopped and he's able to move about the village once more.

Mountain Hall is secured, the village is safe, and it seem that any threat that might have remained has fled with Ghor's defeat and the danger of the coming sun. So you find yourselves in the morning, seated in the great hall with those of importance in Mountain Hall once more. It is decided that after a rest you must leave here, and return to Rhosgobel and speak to Radagast the Brown in person. So you make ready to depart, you rest and restock your dwindling supplies with the blessing of the Chief.

The next morning you are on your way, looking back at the fading sight of Mountain Hall and the Misty Mountains as you travel East in search of the Brown Wizard.

As they leave Mountain Hall, Finn's feeling of restlessness returns. The burden of their task done and the danger passed, his mind began to return to the things he had been thinking about before they had met with Radagast.

First and foremost, he thought it would be good to stop at the Easterly Inn. He wanted to see how the Brandybucks were doing, support them if he could and spend a week or two there working. Then he would return down the Elf Path, and home to the Lake. It has been a very long time since he had been there. Maybe the restlessness was homesickness - he couldn't tell.

"What brings you to the Anduin Vale?" he asks Glirion and Gerwald. "And how did you come to know one another, and poor Everard? You seem as unlikely a company to exist as Varuthil, Borir, Hild, and I."

Hild has been her quiet, usual self; she had fought alongside the Woodmen elsewhere in the village. As for where she wanted to go next, she said nothing. Her presence with Finn was a bit of a mystery; most assumed they were betrothed, but it was a false assumption. Her stern countenance didn't typically invite such questions.

"My people do not oft go abroad, but the Lord and Lady do at times have need of emissaries or those who would gather word from neighboring and even distant lands. It was on such a venture that I met Gerwald and Everard," Glirion answers, smiling.

Borir leads the group in their march. As he walks and listens to the conversation, he is curious and concerned for his raven companion, Black Wing. Although, he would never admit it, he was starting to become fond of the annoying talking bird.

Gerwald nods at Glirion. "He looked so helpless and alone, we invited him over to join us at our fire and decided to keep him", he laughs. "Everard, well that rascal was always getting in trouble. I first met him when he had gotten nabbed by some goblins I was tracking. I believe he said he was 'Just trying to borrow a few of the things they had looted.' The poor fellow looked quite miserable tied up in their camp. I thought he was a small boy at first. Reminded me of my son. I dealt with those goblins and set him free. We made quite a team. Only hobbit I had ever met at the time. He was a good friend and I will miss him."
