Book 8: Act 1 - The Troubles of Men

It is the year 2946 of the Third Age, and the lands east of the Misty Mountains are astir. From the cloud-shrouded peaks above the High Pass to the spider-infested gloom of the forest of Mirkwood, paths long-deserted are trodden once again. Busy merchants carry their wares to new markets, messengers bring tidings from foreign realms, and kings send forth armed men to extend their influence and the rule of law. Some say that a new age of freedom has begun, a time for adventure and great deeds to reclaim glories lost in long centuries of oppression and decline.

But adventures are not really things that people go out and look for. They are dangerous and rarely end well. While it is true that a handful of valiant individuals set out to make their mark on the world, for others it seems that adventure chooses them, as though it is the path they are fated to tread. They are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers, and when they return successful, they call them heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names...

As Finn walks through the chamber he sniffs, then looks for wet footprints on the floor leading to one of the side passages or to a side door.

Speak with Stone: TN 14 vs 18 Fail
Varuthil reaches down and listens to the stone, but its slow and soggy here. There is a taint here, a feeling of dread and the stone will give up nothing here but silence.

Moving about the chamber there are several passages, two to the left lead to what look like long rows of cells. Two to the right appear to be the same as well.

The decorated arch leads to a small short flight of stairs.

While the passage nearest to the entrance seems to lead into a tight confining passage that twists out of sight. Finn notices wet foot prints leading this way.

"Which way friends?" Gerwald asks the others. He glances around the room. The cells could hold the missing dwarves. He walks toward the archway and examines the stairs to see where they might lead.

Varuthil stands up from where she was kneeling. "I can get nothing from the stones except the taint of evil. This is a wicked place."

Finn looks around the chamber for Hild, "Let us find her, and then be out of this place," he adds in reply to Varuthil. "There is no need for us to linger here."

The stairs lead up a short way into some chamber perhaps, clearly there is something important that way.

Varuthil whispers, "Shall I scout the way ahead or does someone else have more stealthy feet than me?"
I'm not sure who's still active in the game, but Varuthil has Stealth 2.

Finn nods at the Elf's suggestion, "We won't be far behind."

Heva steps forward, barely whispering "I've hunted since I could walk"

"Most of us should do well here, though I am your scout," Glirion offers.
If someone else wants to scout ahead, that's fine. I do have a 3 in Stealth and the Keen-Eyed and Folk of the Dusk traits, which lets me use my favored attribute for something. It's been so long since I read the rules I don't remember how that works, hah.
