Pipkin "Oddfellow" Brandybuck

Post by Trogdor » Tue Sep 24, 2013 10:31 pm

Name: Pipkin "Oddfellow" Brandybuck
Race: Hobbit
Culture: Hobbits of the Shire - Hobbit-sense
Background: A Good Listener
Calling: Treasure-hunter
Vital Stats: 3'10"; 3 stone, 2 lbs.; fair-haired
Standard of Living: Prosperous
Standing: 0 (he's considered an 'adventurer' back at home)
Traits: Cooking, Smoking, Burglary, Fair-spoken, True-hearted

Motivations/Background: Pipkin Brandybuck was born to a well-to-do hobbit family in Eastfarthing. From a young age, he was always interested in new things and new places, perhaps too interested, so far as his family was concerned. It might have been the summers he spent with his Brandybuck cousins in Buckland. (They were a bit queer in those parts. Why, some of them even lock their doors at night!) Or it might have been a Tookish part of him coming out. Regardless, as a child, he was always running about, exploring, and generally trying new things. Once, he even swam across the Water in Budgeford, just to see if he could do it. (Can you imagine? He actually swam across a river!) It didn't take Pipkin long to acquire the nickname "Oddfellow."

When he was still reckoned an older child, Pipkin started hanging around his uncle who was one Eastfarthing's shirriffs, even going to far as to follow the hobbit on his regular rounds - which, admittedly, most often brought him to the local pub. But there Pipkin listened to all sorts of stories. Most were conventional hobbit fare about how cousin Bungo's mushroom harvest was last month, or what kind of pies Aunt Dahlia was going to bake for the dance on Saturday. But a some were tales about visitors, or things that happened outside of the Shire. A few were even about elves and dwarves. And one - not generally believed to be true - told of a great battle and a dragon's treasure.

If a hobbit is ever to wander and not lose his reputation completely, it's best done in his tweens. So it was that when he was only twenty-three Pipkin determined that he was going to make the trip around the Old Forest and visit Bree. (Beyong even Buckland, if you can believe it!) By this point, his parents had come to understand his nature and didn't argue. Instead, they gave him a sturdy walking stick and a pouch of coins and wished him luck. Their dearest hope was that he would get this wanderlust out of his system before his coming of age, so that he could settle down and become a respectable hobbit gentleman.

Pipkin traveled to Buckland to visit family, and then onward to Bree. But once there, he heard even more stories at an inn called the Prancing Pony, many of them more fantastic than he had ever heard. Some of the people he met even claimed that the stories about the battle and the dragon horde were true! They spoke of a far off place called Dale and a mountain called the Lonely Mountain, beyond the Misty Mountains to the east. It was foolhardy, he knew. But Pipkin was determined to see Dale and hear the stories they told about the battle and the dragon. And maybe, just maybe, he'd manage to have an adventure of his own and come back with a piece of a dragon horde.

So, he found a group of dwarves that were headed east to visit relatives at the Lonely mountain, and he was off. Since then, he's learned how to travel, and even how to get by on only three meals a day. (Not even a second breakfast or a mid-afternoon snack!) But he has yet to have a proper adventure, or to find a really great treasure to bring back and show the people of the Shire. And until he does, he's not ready to head home again.

Varuthil

Post by Muskrat » Wed Sep 25, 2013 2:54 am

Character Name: Varuthil
Player Name: Muskrat

Culture: Elf of Mirkwood - Folk of the Dusk
Background: Envoy of the King
Calling: Warden
Standard of Living: Martial

Gender: Female
Age: 152 years
Appearance: Varuthil, like all elves is tall, slim and attractive. Her hair is white-blond in color, her eyes a bright green. She is rather grim in disposition and rarely smiles. She wears a long, green dress, with the skirts divided, to better meet the needs of travel on the road. She keeps her clothes simple, with little embroidery and wears little in the way of jewels. The exception is a necklace worn by her mother, which she wears as a reminder of her parents' death.

Character History: Varuthil's early life was tragic--when she was only thirty-eight years of age, her parents were in a party that ambushed by orcs and both were killed. Although adopted and raised by relatives, this early sorrow left its mark on Varuthil. Her personality grew grim and she rarely smiled. While others among the Mirkwood elves would take time away from their battle against the Shadow to make merry, she immersed herself in her studies, particularly the lore of the Enemy and his servants. She was driven less by a desire for revenge though than the wish that no one else would have to suffer the way she had. Being extremely focused, she has taken up the mantle of adulthood at a relatively young age for an elf. Underneath her grim exterior, Varuthil is actually soft-hearted. She has studied the arts of healing and is quick to help those in need. On the other hand, she keeps much of what she knows to herself. She knows that knowledge of the Enemy can be corrupting and does not want to expose others to it; she is abstractly aware that she too could be corrupted, but thinks that she has enough self-discipline that she need not fear this greatly. Although primarily a scholar by training, she has traveled as well with her foster father, her uncle Eällandor, an envoy for King Thranduil, visiting the Woodmen of southern Mirkwood and the city of Dale. Given the traditional antipathy of the elves for the dwarves, she has less to do with them and tends to believe the stereotypes that dwarves are especially prone to greed, but she has no particular personal dislike for members of this race and will treat those she meets respectfully.

Wren - Elf of Mirkwood

Post by Eilandor » Wed Sep 25, 2013 5:10 am

Name: Wren
Race: Elf
Culture: Elves of Mirkwood - Folk of the Dusk
Background: Wild at Heart
Calling: Wanderer
Vital Stats: Age - 125, Height - 6'2", Weight - 165, Hair - Dirty Blond
Standard of Living: Martial
Standing: 0 - Adventurer
Traits: Mirkwood-lore, Woodwright, Keen-eyed, Nimble, Folk-lore

Motivations/Background:

Wren is as committed to preserving their hidden realm as the next Wood-Elf. For a large portion of his 125 years he has helped to do so, but lately he yearns for more. The world is large and Wren has seen but a small portion of it. Clearly there was more to this extended life granted by being Elven than just protecting a forest for 500 years. When Wren caught word of the rebuilding effort going on in Lake-town he gathered his belongings little as they were and set out of the forest. For the next several years Wren split time between his duties in Mirkwood and putting his woodwright skills to use for the rebuilding effort.

Folk of Wilderland

Post by Vardaen » Mon Sep 15, 2014 9:59 pm

Folk of the Easterly Inn

You learn the following either from interacting over the time with them or from Dody's constant conversations.

Dody Brandybuck: The owner and bartender of the inn, Dody is exceptionally gregarious and friendly, even for a Hobbit. He could talk the hind legs off any creature in Middle-earth; if Dody had ended up in Gollum's cave instead of Bilbo, then he would have lost the Riddle-Game, but the Dwarves would have found Dody by following the noise of a drunken Gollum singing about fish. He is everybody's best friend.

Dindy Brandybuck: Dody's younger and more nervous brother. Unlike his garrulous sibling, Dindy never wanted
to travel in the Wild. He always dreamed of opening an inn, but assumed it would be in Buckland or maybe the Eastfarthing, not over the edge of the Wild. Still, if things keep going smoothly, then the Easterly Inn could make the fortune of both Brandybuck brothers, and he could move back to the Shire in a few years with chests of silver and gold, just like Bilbo Baggins.

Last spring, Dindy returned to the Shire to obtain vitally needed supplies, such as handkerchiefs, umbrellas, spiceracks, silverware, barrel-spigots, feather-bolsters and round doors, as well as trade goods like pipe-weed and Shire-beer (which, to be honest, could also be counted as vitally needed supplies').

Agatha Brandybuck: Dody's wife, a quiet woman of Tookish blood. She is much more sensible and hardworking than Dody; she lets him keep the customers entertained while she organises the rest of the business. For example, she buys supplies off the Woodmen and the Beornings and even, rarely, the Elves and sees to the security of the inn. Underneath her businesslike, bustling demeanour, she's absolutely enchanted to be out here in the Wild meeting all sorts of strange folk.

Her two sons Dando and Rodry both run wild around the inn and the surrounding countryside. She intends to send them to foster with relatives in the Shire in a few years.

Frier: Frier is a Dwarf tinker-smith who has travelled the roads between the Misty Mountains and the Iron Hills for years. He helped build the inn, and has signed on as their carpenter/blacksmith/farrier/assistant bartender/woodcutter and general axeman in residence. Frier is fond of the Hobbits and fonder still of the money they pay him. After many years of wandering, the Easterly Inn is a good place for him to rest his feet.

Shadrach: A stray dog that was 'adopted' by the Hobbits or, more accurately, that adopted them.

Folk of Wilderland

Post by Vardaen » Mon Sep 15, 2014 10:28 pm

Folk of the Woodmen

Chieftain Ingomer Axebreaker: Aerth explains that the Woodmen of the forest have no king. Each House has a council of Elders, and important decisions are voted on by everyone who meets beneath the roof of the Great House. In time of need, the Woodmen follow the traditions of their ancestors and elect a war-leader, but he who is chosen remains in charge only for the duration of the threat he is no chieftain or lord.

Ingomer Axebreaker of Woodland Hall, then, is no more important than any of the other old men who sit on the dais near the council fire. His words are given no more weight, his wisdom is not counted as any greater than the rest but everyone east of the Great River knows that Ingomer rules the Hall. He is an old warrior, in his sixtieth summer, but he is still canny and brave. Few among the Woodmen are as respected as he is, and none have as much support among all four Houses of the people.

The Hermit of Mirkwood: Living in a hollowed out tree in Mirkwood near to the Elf Path is an old hermit thought at first perhaps to be the son of Ingomer. It turned out the mad hermit was not however, but did know Ignomer's son when the pair were imprisoned in Dol Guldur together. It is from him the party received the axe shard of Wolf's Bane.

Amalric: The leader of a hunting party that the Fellowship joined in on. A true hunter he was focused on the hunt and spoke mainly of such things with the group and knew well the deer, wild pigs and rabbits that are commonly hunted near Woodland Town.

Evoric: Amalric's younger brother is far more out going and still enamored of strangers and elves and dwarves. He is more light-hearted than his brother and in fact is a better tracker as well. He was badly wounded in the skirmish with the Orcs of Mirkwood during the hunt. Because of Varuthil's healing skill he was saved.

Heva: Is a female warrior, talks on a range of subjects. She is of a similar mindset to the Fellowship members, seeing the possibilities in the world now that the Necromancer has been vanquished and the Orcs are diminished following the Battle of Five Armies. But her focus is very much on the Woodmen, rather than the wider Free Peoples. - Heva died in the first skirmish with the Orcs of Mirkwood that would later lead to the all out assault on Woodland Hall.

Thorismund: Had lost his wife to a malady during the previous winter when an ill wind from Dol Guldur hit their lands, and was reluctant to be drawn into conversation, and you learned little about him. He was badly wounded in the skirmish with the Orcs of Mirkwood during the hunt. Because of Varuthil's healing skill he was saved, only to die later during the Assault on Woodland Hall.

Imnachar: A friend of Wren, who during the summer of 2947 went on many hunts with the Elf into Mirkwood. The pair learned a great deal of hunting and bow work from one another.

Folk of Thranduil's Kingdom

Elfking Thranduil: Thranduil the Elvenking sits on his throne of carven wood, the ruler of his realm since the end of the previous age of the world. A prince of lofty lineage, he is a survivor of cruel wars that have had an enormous effect on his personality and outlook. Obeying his own foreboding heart's counsel, he long ago resolved to forsake the light of the stars and build a strong fastness under the earth to guard his people. The Fellowship stood before him, after his disguise was removed, in the Forest Citadel and turned over letters from Radagast the Brown. They eurged him to come to the Woodmen's aid at Woodland Hall, and he was swayed to do so. He personally lead a war party south and stood in battle against the Orcs of Mirkwood a shining example of his people's prowess and skill.

Siruviel: This elven guide met the Fellowship near the Forest Gate when they sought out King Thranduil's aid for the Woodmen. The elf was skilled in the way of the woods and took the group to the Forest Citadel in the north, and not to Thranduil's halls. He was later seen during the Battle for Woodland Hall singing loudly as he fired his bow at the orcs.

Aerandir Helyanw: The chief courtier and counselor of the Forest Citadel. He left no good impression on the Fellowship, and his obvious distaste not those not of Sindarian birth was clear for all. He did not however betray the group, but was less than polite for your liking.

Gwaenor: A messenger that came from King Thranduil with gifts for Varuthil and Wren from the Elfking for their part in defeating the Orcs of Mirkwood during the Battle of Woodland Hall.

Legolas: Is an elf of the Woodland Realm of Mirkwood. He was of Sindarin heritage, being the only recorded son of King Thranduil. The most important events of his life are surrounded by the War of the Ring, during which he was the Elven representative in the Fellowship of the Ring; his Elven characteristics were a valuable asset because of his superior sight, hearing, lightness of foot, and unrivaled archery.
Image
Galion: King Thranduil's former cup-bearer (the one and the same from the Hobbit book). He has acted as liason for the Fellowship while in Thranduil's hall from time to time.

Lady Ireme of the Noldor: She wears a gown of shimmering white and cloud-grey silks. Her face is hidden by a grey veil, but her arms are adorned with silver bracelets, and upon her finger a ring glimmers with its own inner light. She must be one of the Noldor, of whom but a few remain in Middle-earth. The pair, her and Legolas, spend a few moments greeting one another in the Ancient Tongue.

She then turns to you, her light and radiance as a Noldor of Valinor washes over you. “I am Irimë of the House of Gil-Galad. Elen sila lumenn’ omentielvo. I have been told that you shall be my escorts to the West so I might depart Middle-earth."

Folk of Wilderland

Folk of Dale

Baldor: He was once a rich merchant of Lake-town, but he lost a great deal when the dragon fell on the city. Not only was his fortune destroyed, but his wife Halla also perished. He carried his young son out of the flames, but could not find his wife. While others have found prosperity in the years since the Battle of Five Armies, he has not been so lucky. He moved to Dale when its reconstruction started, but he has yet to rebuild his former wealth. The group joined him as caravan guards as their first venture together and have remained a loyal Fellowship ever since.

Belgo: He is Baldor's young son, a good lad, and his father's pride and joy. However when Baldor lost his memory to an enchanted stream and forgot his son a great strain has been placed on the two's relationship.
