Game Chatter
So Varuthil's action, just want to chit chat before we get into this.
Merciful can't be used for an auto success here. However it can allow you to make a check not normally allowed in this case.
I feel like the check should be Inspire not Persuade.
Awe = Intimidate (Body)
Persuade = Trick Them (Wits)
Inspire = Charm Them (Heart)
Inspire (Heart, Personality)
A hero able to Inspire others can instil positive feelings
in others, urging them to act on the matter at hand. This
is a feat achieved mainly through example, charisma and
personal conviction, rather than through the effective
use of words (which falls under Persuade, below). It
can be used on individuals, but is especially effective in
influencing crowds. Heroes with high Inspire ratings
can be forceful orators, passionate agitators, and well loved
leaders of men.
A successful Inspire roll awakens a chosen feeling in the
subject, so long as it is not in opposition to their current
mood. A great success is enough to influence wholly
disinterested individuals, and an extraordinary success
may turn rivals into supporters.
Persuade (Wits, Personality)
This skill allows a hero to apply his or her reasoning to
convince another individual of an idea or course of action.
It can be used to influence small groups of listeners, but
only if used in an appropriate context, such as a common
hall. An attempt at persuasion requires more time than
other Personality skills, but can have a more lasting
impact on other characters' actions. A high Persuade
score denotes an uncommon eloquence, a love of speech
and knowledge of its proper use and its effect on listeners.
Wise men, advisors to chieftains and kings and their
messengers all share this passion for the spoken word.
The successful use of the skill lets the hero convince his
audience of the flaws in their current position. A great
success convinces the subject of the quality of the hero's
stance, while an extraordinary success may turn the
subject into an ardent believer.

Re: Game Chatter
That sounds fair enough, being able to make a check one wouldn't normally make. And I guess Inspire does make sense--unfortunately, it's also the Personality skill Varuthil is weakest in, with a 0. Even spending a hope point to add her Heart score probably wouldn't help that much, since it's just a +2. But I would be willing to spend the Hope point to do so--it feels in character for Varuthil.

You could, and I almost did it but was waiting for more posts, use awe for intimidate. Like what borir staryed

Re: Game Chatter
OK, that makes more sense. I'll edit my post and do that. If I phrase it correctly, could I still invoke Merciful for an auto-success? If it doesn't seem to fit, that's fine. The rules do seem to encourage being creative in applying the traits in non-obvious ways.

Re: Game Chatter
I don't think so this time, but it can give you a bonus, not sure how intimidate is merciful, but you could convince me with a good post.
I have to read again on the auto success. When it comes to confrontations it might be harder to get auto, but a bonus success might work, as if you had rolled a "T" on one die. This is why I wanted to chat this out, new system for everyone, trying to sort it out myself.

Re: Game Chatter
Yeah, a bonus might make sense in a situation like this. It seems like the use of the Traits is very much left to the discretion of the players and GM, so I think we all need to get a sense of what might be reasonable. The rules actually encourage the whole group to discuss whether they think the application of a Trait is reasonable.

Re: Game Chatter
I made a slight error on the location of the scene. You are on the edge of the old Desolation, not on the edge of Mirkwood, but there were some trees, etc there. But you were still a good way from Mirkwood proper. Basically just an out of the way area, slightly isolated from the fields, etc.

Re: Game Chatter
@Vardaen, should I have Varuthil just show up at Finn's doorstep or will you want me to role play dealing with the guards?

Re: Game Chatter
Yes, it might be fun to RP with the guards. Since I've posted my arrival, I'll wait for you to post for the guards.
