Book 3: Chapter 2 - Into the Cold North

It was in the beginning of the reign of Malvegil of Arthedain that evil came to Arnor. For at that time the realm of Angmar arose in the North beyond the Ettenmoors. Its lands lay on both sides of the Mountains, and there were gathered many evil men, and Orcs, and other fell creatures. The lord of that land was known as the Witch-king, but it was not known until later that he was indeed the chief of the Ringwraiths, who came north with the purpose of destroying the Dúnedain in Arnor, seeing hope in their disunion, while Gondor was strong.

Ruins of the North is a game set in the north of Eriador in the ruins of Arnor between the years of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Using the One Ring RPG system the game will explore the legacy of the Dunedain and the dangers returned to that part of Middle-earth.

"Perhaps we should have tried our luck sneaking," he whispers to Hugo.

Hartley looks to draw his bow and loose an arrow at the goblins is he can, otherwise he is ready to draw his short sword and charge into the fray.
Hartley will fire his bow if an opening volley is allowed. Bow 4+3
He will remain rearward if possible and continue firing the bow or go open with his short sword. Short Sword 1

A Goblin Frenzy: Round 1

Opening Volley

I'll ask you post again for Round 1 cause I got a bit lost. You can have 1 Big Folk or 2 Hobbits in Rearward cause of the conditions.

Round 1 Heros, Goblins
The room is flooded with silver light as Telurin pulls off his lamps hood. That lights the way for your opening volley against the mustering goblins. Bows twang, and spears whistle through the air. Halleth's arrow strike a goblin in the chest knocking it down, but it scrambles back to its feet. The goblin a few marks away takes a spear against its leg grazing it making it stagger and falter but it too stays in the fray. Hugo's shot goes high as he fires over the head of Halleth. Yet Hartley's arrow pierces the eye of one of the goblin snapping its head back and felling it in a single blow.
The seven goblins, two of which are wounded, drive forward gathering weapons and screaming against the lamp light. Hwalda grabs Eysslt by the sleeve, "Come girl, time to run, Freach guard our rear!" The three hill men retreat back down the passage hoping to get clear of the battle.

The heroes....

Telurin does still have Great Spear (which he cannot throw). He does carry the small Spear for throwing, which as you said, is gone for now.
Telurin holds his Great Spear steady, waiting for the charging goblin to fall upon it.
Open, Spear 5 (k4).

Halleth draws his sword, moving forward to engage the goblins in hand-to-hand combat, trying to take advantage of having momentarily taken them off guard. He tries to discern which one is in charge and attack that one.
Stance: Open
Action: Attack with long sword vs. the goblin that looks like they're in command--or the nearest goblin if that's not appropriate. Spend battle die.

A Goblin Frenzy: Round 1

Post by Vardaen » Wed Feb 12, 2020 5:33 pm

*Whizzz*

*Thunk*

Hartley puts an arrow into the chest of a goblin leading the charge. The little hobbit's aim is perfect, and the shot hits the goblin in its cold dead heart slaying it. The bad news is Hartley realizes he only has 5 arrows left!

Telurin spins his great spear into play, one hand on the spear's haft, the butt against his boot. The other hold up his silver lamp. A goblin charges him and he lowers the point at the last possible moment tricking the goblin into spitting its self a foot up the shaft before it slows from its charge very much dead.

Halleth and Hugo turn from bow to blade and charges forward infront of Telurin, side by side the Ranger and Hobbit strike out at various foes. Halleth cuts down a wounded goblin, and Hugo's blow is something of a miracle as he drives it up under its armor and rib cage until the point of his short blade pierces its stomach and liver. Both foes fall.

With four dead goblins in the blink of an eye, not to mention the others from your volley, the three that remain stop in their charge, they howl and scream for more, turn tail and go to fetch others screaming and shouting about you.

For the moment you have driven them back, can you capitalize on it?
Hartley: Rearward: Rolled: Feat Die: 10* Success Die: 2,5,3,2 Totaling: 22+4 = 26 HIT for Piercing Blow: [Pro: 11 vs 14 Fail] DEAD
Halleth: Open Rolled: Feat Die: 9* Success Die: 4,3,3 Totaling: 19 Hit for 5 End DEAD
Hugo: Open (Battle Die 1): Rolled: Feat Die: 9* Success Die: 6t,4,6t Totaling: 25 with 2 successes ExtraO Hit for 13 End = DEAD
Telurin: Open Rolled: Feat Die: 9* Success Die: 3,2,3,(2),3 Totaling: 20 Hit for Piercing Blow: [Pro: 14 vs 18] = DEAD

Goblins turn and rally more

Halleth shouts at the slaves, "Alright you lot, if you want to get out of here and escape to freedom, this is your chance! Follow your fellow Hill Men out through the tunnels!" He turns back in and calls, "Freach, Essylt, we've driven off the goblins for now. Come here and talk to your people--they'll trust you more than those of us out here. And tell us if there's anyone missing who we should keep looking for." He turns his attention to his companions. "We still haven't found my liege Arphan--I don't intend to retreat unless I must. We may not have another chance to find our way into these caverns. We were lucky to make it this far without raising an alarm along the way."

Telurin considers dimming his lamp, so as to draw less unwanted attention, then remembers the alarm has already been sounded. "Follow the lamp" he says to the women and children and other slaves, as he prepares to follow their trail back to the warg, dog, or whatever it was, entrance.

Halleth looks at Telurin with surprise. "I thought you were going to help me find Arphan. If we leave now, we will likely never have another chance to get back in, what with the place being on high alert for intruders."
