Soaked to the skin, Dolneril, Dobbin, Orin and Torwald huddle round the small fire that the Barding set for the party. Boots are removed and other gear is laid out by the fire in an attempt to dry it out before the journey continues.

While it is spring, the Long Marshes aren’t renowned for their warmth and everyone is shivering and stamping their feet with the chill air on their wet clothes and skin. All in all, a thoroughly unpleasant river crossing.

Dolneril, Dobbin and Torwald – any food carried in your packs or on your person has been ruined by the water.

Orin shudders a bit from the cold. Even Dwarves got cold from time to time... nothin' to be ashamed of! He however is more concerned as he pours out the content of his pack, finding his food rations still intact, but those that had taken a splash around in the river would find theirs ruined.

"Looks like we'll be relying on our 'unters ever more." He notes, teeth chattering,"Will share with I've left, but it won't last forever with all of us eatin' it."

Really All of it? Its not like you don't boil meat for stews or wash veggies off. Torwald wasn't under long. I can see things like bread being crappy now, but Cram was made to resist these things, and if a bit of water ruins it, that sort of seems over the top to me.
Torwald keeps adding wood to the fire. "We need more wood, we'll never dry off at this rate."

Slowly your clothes dry out, at least to the point where you aren't dripping water everywhere...

True, I guess trail rations are designed to last... Half lost, half survived. Does that seem more reasonable?

During the drying off Torwalf checks his rations, "There is mud in here, check your packs. We likely lost some of the Cram and other food. We are going to have to forage a bit if things start to get tight." He flicks out hunks of waterlogged bread and Cram and tosses them out into the swamp for the critters (not too close!)." Warmed up and dried off, relatively speaking he starts to get his things back together.
Works! Thanks.

"Now, now, Torwald," says Dobbin with a mild tsk-tsk, "everyone knows that a clean campsite is a safe campsite." The hobbit, still shivering but feeling better from the fire, gathers up the spoiled food that Torwald threw aside and asks everyone else to check their packs too. Having gathered all the spoiled food from everyone in the party, he turns to Dolenril, "Master Elf, when your strength permits, perhaps you could take this spoiled food on your hunt and set it as bait for some beaver, deer or rabbit? It might just increase your chances of finding game..."
I think Dolenril was our hunter, right?

With a nod, Dolenril rises. "Thank you master Dobbin. I am quite recovered. I will do just that." The elf gathers up the spoiled food and moves out of the camp to try and replace some of what was lost.

After hanging his wet clothes near the fire Eofor will treat all of his leather items with oil and then check his weapons for tarnishing. He chants quietly as he sharpens and oils his sword. The song send a pang of homesickness through him. Between watches he dreams of dry fields of tall grass.

With a decent sized fire burning the fellowship lays out their soaked clothing, hoping to dry out as much as they dare in the open. Packs are opened, rations checked and the waterlogged portions are given over to Dolneril as he prepares to hunt some game for a quick meal.

With Eofor maintaining his gear and the others drying off by the modest fire, Dolneril stalks off into the long grasses of the eastern bank of the Running River in search of food. Using the scraps of soggy food the elf manages to entice a rabbit or two out into the open and traps them. As he is about to head back to the makeshift camp, he notices something that catches his eye.

Around a half mile away from the rest of his companions is the remains of another camp. Scattered around the periphery of this camp appear to be several dead bodies…

"Well, that is interesting", the elf thinks to himself. He moves closer, stealthily , to get a better view of what has befallen at the other camp.
