Prologue: The Longest Night

Ever wonder what it would be like to play a cosmic-level super hero? Yes, that’s right, an interstellar class of super hero. Perhaps something akin to a member of the Green Lantern Corps or possibly even a colleague to Rom Space Knight? Maybe you’d prefer to play something like Shazam or Adam Warlock. Answer yes? Then this may very well be the game for you! Utilizing the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying Core Rules by Margaret Weis Productions Ltd. and the powers of sheer imagination, I have come up with a game setting in which players are allowed the chance to play such powerful types of heroes. Starknight Academy will essentially allow players to portray one of their home-world's "best" in a military academy styled setting. There they will undergo the trials and exams that will hopefully reward them with the title of Starknight and a chance to join the galaxy's finest order of law-keepers in the Universe!

Wishing to draw the newly transformed Preen’s attention solely to himself, King Atom leaps atop one of the nearby bunks and presents himself to the alien in an imposing manner. The large warrior then proceeds to try and taunt the creature’s attention in the attempts of allowing others in the room to find adequate cover, warn the others aboard the starship, or possibly even aid him in the handling of this most curious form of an adversary.
Having discussed things in our Danger Room thread, the following occurs:

King Atom’s Action Dice Pool
TEAM d8+
FRIGHTENED CADETS d4+
BATTLE BORN! d8+
SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH d10+
ENHANCED REFLEXES d8+
MENACE MASTER d10

Trigger Focus SFX to convert 2d8 into 1d10

King Atom’s Roll
3d10+1d8+1d4
D4=3
D8=4
D10=8, 7, 6

King Atom’s Result
15 + d10 Effect Die

Preen’s Reaction Dice Pool
SOLO d10+
ASSORTED FURNISHINGS d4+
MASSIVE BRUTE d8+
GODLIKE DURABILITY d12+
MENACE MASTER d10

Trigger Strongest There Is! SFX to Step Up Emotional Stress to d4 and add King Atom’s Superhuman Strength die to the roll.

Preen’s Roll
1d12+2d10+1d8+1d4
D4=2
D8=5
D10=3, 5
D12=12

Preen’s Result
17 + d10 Effect Die

Preen wins!
Preen snaps his gaze upon King Atom’s frame and leers back at him angrily. Clenching his powerful fists tightly in repetitious fashion, the massive brute then furrows his brow and slowly licks an eyeball with its purplish colored barbed-tongue. “Pathetic.” the transformed Preen growls deeply as he glowers at Atom; the beast's heavily armored hide clearly showing signs of nothing less than a howitzer even being able to penetrate it.

"Simply pathetic…"

Witnessing the entire ordeal, Deadlock…

Deacon watches as King Atom jumps on top of the bunk to try and draw Preen's attention.

Something needs to happen or someone is going to get hurt Deacon thinks to himself as he quickly grabs a pillow from the bunk above him. Adding a metal book end for extra weight, Deacon next geabs a vial of pepper spray from his kit and sprays the pillow case.

Just as Preen reacts to King Atom, Deacon acts. "Preen, you need to cut this stuff out, so we can go back to sleep. Quit, showing off." Deacon then quickly aims and hurls the pillow case at Preen's head.

Deeming Preen a threat, Deadlock proceeds to start shoving things into a pillowcase he has managed to grab from one of the nearby bunks. In goes one of the cadet’s metal-framed placards he or she has resting atop their footlocker. Judging Preen’s relative size and bulk, plus the fact that he looks to be greatly armored and highly resistant to damage, Deadlock adds some other items to the pillowcase as well.

In goes someone’s steel-toed boot and an extra pair of handcuffs and a set of brass knuckles Deadlock has among his person. Giving the massive Preen another look, Deadlock quickly shoves a few other hefty-looking items that he can find into the pillowcase. Once the case has been filled, Deadlock spins the top of it around rapidly to secure its top and to gain a better hold on the item.

He then reaches into his duffle bag and proceeds to retrieve several assorted canisters of some kind. Soaking the case in a mixture of Alduvian Shark Repellant and some commonly found (among Terrans) form of Pepper Spray, the seasoned merc coughs gently as he prepares to throw his makeshift weapon at his adversary.

I shall take your 1 and award you a PP to manifest/exploit an Opportunity. Then I will use this Opportunity to increase the Doom Pool size by D6.

Doom Pool Size
3d6

This represents Preen’s growing ire towards yourself and his surroundings, as well as the over threat that he presents to the room alongside all the other factors such as being confined among the furnishings and amidst a bunch of frightened cadets, etc.
Preen’s focus appears to still be focused upon that of King Atom when Deadlock twirls about his newly-formed projectile. It isn’t until the item is hurled across the barracks that the massive Rodellian mutant responds. Flinching slightly, the angered Preen jerks his head back and twists it to the side in order to see what it is that is being hurled at him.

The pillowcase strikes Preen across the side of his jaw. An audible, though dull, *CLANK* is heard careening across the room as the bulky item collides with the alien’s jaw. Unaffected by the maneuver, Preen snorts in revulsion and then proceeds to lick the side of his face with his barbed-tongue. “Seriously?” proclaims the hulking Rodellian in an icy grumble as his mood worsens. "Pathetic..."

It is quite apparent that the newly-transformed Preen is NOT happy with the two attempts made to thwart his person. He grows deeply and furrows his brow even greater. The surrounding cadets begin to panic.

Seeing yet another of his colleague’s attempt fail, Oracle…

Kuri looks about him and sees only confusion. There were any number of cadets milling about, and a very upset Preen. At least if he wasn't upset before, the surprisingly large cadet would likely be upset after all the attacks on him. What was most important now was to clear the field of the cadets to make sure no one was hurt. Not the few in the front who seemed to be willing to stand up to Preen, but the groups milling aimlessly.

Rising a foot or two off the ground, the mage forms his hands into mystic symbols and begins chanting:

In the name of the Dread Darrabas --
by the power of the deathless Modrossus --
I call upon the Hosts of Heshem!
heed the words of thy mortal servant!

As he speaks, a warp in space appears and moves to try and engulf the frightened cadets, offering them the safety of the remote dining hall.
Trying to teleport as many cadets to the safety of the dining hall as possible.
Game Effect: remove the scene distinction "Frightened Cadets."

This should be: Team (1d10) + Arcane Defender (1d8) + Teleport (1d10) + Mystic Master (1d10)
Use the Standard Rules to change Mystic Master 1d10 into 2d8
That should give: 2d10 + 3d8 to go versus the Doom Pool, if I understand correctly.

See: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbbp2 ... shortfilms
Look at about 1:06 to see the sort of teleport effect I'm looking for.

I choose Preen to go next.

Oracle
Having recited his incantation, a vibrant orb of illuminated energy manifests itself in front of Oracle’s right palm. The pulsating mass of glowing magic tingles the Velho's skin as it hums forth with an arcane power. Without warning, the orb suddenly flattens and elongates itself into a vertically-aligned disc of sizable shimmering energy. It then proceeds to glide across the barracks’ floor in a relatively precise and orderly manner; though somewhat serpentine in nature.
Oracle’s Action
Traits = TEAM+ARCANE DEFENDER+TELEPORT+MYSTIC MASTER

SFX = Splitting Master Specialty into 2D8

Dice Pool = 2d10+3d8

Roll
D10: (1,8)
D8: (8,4,7)

Result = 16
Effect Die = d8

Doom Pool’s Reaction
Dice Pool = 4d6

Roll
4d6: (2,4,5,6)

Result = 11
Effect Die = N/A

Overall Result
16 vs 11 = Oracle’s Success, +1 Step Up to Effect Die (d10)
In but scant moments, the surrounding cadets are effortlessly transported into safety and comfort of the Zentrati Warship's Mess Hall by Oracle's magic. Preen's mood sours yet again. The magical presentation itself and accompanying cries of panic or gasps of astonishment as the frightened cadets are removed from the barracks appears to annoy the Rodellian greatly. His brow furrows and it appears that the line has finally been crossed to merit a response of his own.

Surveying the results of his handiwork, Oracle's own brown furrows a bit as well. It would seem that neither Radol or his sister Tamrin, wished to be escorted to safety. The two Narakkan's of noble heritage have skillfully used their wings and powers of flight to avoid the mage's glowing spell and now hover about the barracks alongside the remaining others.

Preen
Having been pushed to his apparent limit of tolerance, Preen's response - albeit not an uncommon one - is somewhat unusual. The mutated Rodellian glares sternly at Oracle’s display of magical power and then again at Deadlock before finally transfixing his gaze upon King Atom. Reaching forth with one of his massively powerful-looking hands, the former docile-creature promptly *SNAPS* off one portion of nearby bunk bed's reinforced framework and begins to bend the metal about his wrist and knuckles.
Preen is trying to manufacture an Asset out of the nearby bunk bed to aid him in battle. His roll is vs. the Doom Pool.

Preen’s Action
Traits = SOLO+ENGINE OF DESTRUCTION+GODLIKE STRENGTH+COMBAT MASTER

Dice Pool = 1d12+2d10+1d8

Roll
1d8: (6)
2d10: (4,7)
1d12: (8)

Result = 15
Effect Die = d8 (notice I opted to keep the smallest die-type?)

Doom Pool’s Reaction
Dice Pool = 4d6

Roll
4d6: (2,4,5,6)

Result = 11
Effect Die = d6

Overall Result
15 vs 11 =Preen’s Success, he now has an Asset: KNUCKLE DUSTERS d8
Preen growls deeply as he easily bends the metal framework about his hand, commenting briefly as he does so. The massive brute appears to be greatly angered by the party’s current course of action and highly agitated at something else, perhaps internally, as well. Snorting his disgust in periodic tandem, he speaks in a bellowing tone.

“You’d best use your magic to flee with the others…lest you taste my ire. You’ve already angered me and even tried to do me harm. I shall not abide any further attempts to do likewise or cause myself peril.”

Having completed the task of encasing one of his hands with metal, Preen promptly snaps off another section of the bed’s siding and starts to wrap his other hand up with it.

“It should already be quite apparent to you that I am not like my former self. Where he is weak, I am not. Where he would run, I shall stand my ground and fight!”

Preen finishes wrapping his other hand and now stands before you fully armed and ready to do battle. He continues to snort in periodic tandem and appears to be suffering from some kind of an emotionally-based mannet of distress. He promptly concludes.

“Speaking of which Green Man and Foolish One ( @JohnnyWeird & @squadfather40 )… if it is a fight that you both desire, then a FIGHT you shall have!"

Ea had watched from the sidelines with amazement as the situation went from possibly bad to infinitely worse. It was clear to her that the tiny and afeared Preen had been transformed, and that transformation was somewhat linked to fear and anger.

The strange wizard had already teleported the Cadets away, having viewed them as possibly under threat, making her wonder why she hadn't been sent away as well. She hadn't shown any intention or particular powers after all!

Swallowing, she decides to go with an alternative route, and with a few hesitant steps makes her way between Wrath and the more...combative...members of the group.

"Eaaasy there ya'll." She speaks softly, grateful that her voice didn't crack,"We're all friends here and there's no need for a Fight. Nobody is going to hurt anyone here."
I believe I'll go with
Solo (d10: Ea is not working with the group in this, in fact she's trying to de-escalate the situation many of them seem to want)
Seeking a Purpose (d8)
Mind Control (d8)
Unsure which specialty, if any I could use...

As Ea speaks, a soothing and pleasurable aroma accompanies her words; much like the scent of fresh morning rain over a field of fragrant flowers or perhaps even the much-needed morning cup of coffee just the way one likes it. For a time, the meaning of the woman's message seems clear enough and even lingers in the minds of Wrath, Deadlock, Oracle, and King Atom...
"STOP FIGHTING EACH OTHER!"
Since @Olligarchy is busy with work, we shall simply go with:
  • A Mind Control attempt vs Wrath+Deadlock+King Atom+Oracle.
  • He is opting NOT to include Wrath's Emotional Stress in this roll.
  • If successful the Complication created will be STOP FIGHTING EACH OTHER!
Vester'Naur’s Action
Traits = TEAM+SEEKING PURPOSE+MIND CONTROL+SCIENCE EXPERT

SFX = Area Attack (3 additional targets)

Dice Pool = 4d8+3d6

Roll
3d6: (4,4,2)
4d8: (7,1,5,8)

The 1 is taken and I shall exploit it!
  • +1 PP to Vester'Naur and the Doom Pool's lowest die Steps Up +1.
  • New Doom Pool = 1d8+3d6
Result = 15
Effect Die = d8 on Wrath, d6 on the Others
The words spoken appear to have quite the effect upon Preen. The hulking brute of an alien immediately begins to snarl and froth in anger, almost appearing as if he were about to launch himself at the foolish Narakkan for allowing herself to get too close to him. It isn't until Preen suddenly snorts and slightly gags upon the change of scent in the air that he abruptly ceases with his advance and proceeds to look about the room warily.

The clever heroine's pheromones appear to be working!
Wrath is torn. His current state of mind is quite literally “HULK SMASH!” but he is also at conflict with his inner self, i.e. the cute and lovable Rodellian you know as Preen. I say that he applies ENGINE OF DESTRUCTION as a negative Distinction and then the MAN OR MONSTER Distinction as a positive one. Sadly alas, he has no other Traits that could prove useful in a first encounter with an alien species that possesses Mind Control other than the Menace Specialty. Simply put, the rage he puts forth strikes fear in the hearts of someone trying to affect the brute's mind.

Wrath’s Reaction
Traits = SOLO+ENGINE OF DESTRUCTION+MAN OR MONSTER+MENACE MASTER

Dice Pool = 2d10+1d8+1d4

Roll
1d4: (3)
1d8: (6)
2d10: (6,5)

Result = 12
Effect Die = d10

Overall Result
  • 12 vs 15 = Failure!
  • Successful Complication!
  • d10 Effect Die vs d8 Effect Die = Step Back -1
  • Wrath now has STOP FIGHTING EACH OTHER d6
The large beast clenches his iron-wrapped fists in anger as the glint of Preen's former self suddenly begins to manifest itself upon those still within the barracks, if but only for a moment. Pausing to stare upon his hands with utter contempt and revulsion, the tormented creature immediately begins to stomp about the barracks floor and slams things around wildly.

It is clearly apparent to all, that something inside of Preen is trying to combat itself!

Meanwhile...the pleasurable aroma that Vester'Naur has emitted and the Narakkan's words' meaning still lingers about the barracks.
Going over to the Danger Room to see how you three wish to respond and handle your die rolls. That way you can use them to formulate your response on how you manage to succeed or fail in trying to resist the Mind Control.

Pathetic.

Ruen D'naa has borne many insults in his career as a soldier.

His drill sergeant called him a pampered brat.

His father's generals called him a traitor.

His enemies called him a monster.

But never before has King Atom been beneath the contempt of another.

It feels...ENRAGING.

This...this...misshapened PEASANT...this BEAST, unworthy to lick my boots clean! Men will tremble at hia memory, the agony I will visit upon him! He will learn respect for his betters!

And yet as he prepares to gouge the eyes of Wrath - to show him TRUE fury - an acrid smell tingles his nostrils.

The deafening pounding of hia heart is suddenly joined in counterpoint by the voice of Ea Makarian, calling for peace. He can hear the honey in her tone - like a wet nurse comforting a squalling infant.

I am no child, to be spoken to this way! I am a KING.

Then perhaps you should start acting like one, Ruen.

The thought recalls him to himself. He slowly and.deliberately exhales.

"You have the right of it, Ea Makarian. We are comrades, one and all. It will take more than a poor night's sleep to break that bond."
My result is 12 with a d8 effect. King Atom's pride is bruised, but he's got to learn to reel it in.

Oracle feels the pheromones begin to effect him and immediately falls back to of the mind focusing techniques he learned in his training, steeling his mind against the intrusion. As intriguing as it was to experience this effect and let someone else control his actions, ... NO! He would not fall prey to such manipulation. He was the Oracle, and he must maintain control over his facilities.
Resist the mind control.

Traits = TEAM+ENDURING CURIOSITY+ENHANCED SENSES+PSYCHIC RESISTANCE+COSMIC MASTER

Dice Pool = 2d10+2d8+1d4 (+1 PP)

BTW, how are we tracking PPs? Those will go up and down as a fight progresses. Even at this early stage, I'm getting confused. I think I'll have 3 PP so far, but I want to make certain.

Also, Kuri will be having a little chat with Vester'Naur after this is over about courtesy and using mind control on allies. All Kuri did was evacuate some innocents. Hardly reason to try and control his mind.
