"Why wait?"

Quig isn't much on long term planning or delaying, perhaps his short life span, or always racing mind. "Let's go I say. See what we find!"

He returns to the engine room to help where he can there along the way.

Chapter 3: The Unbounded Wayfarer

Post by ManWithDoor » Wed Jan 09, 2019 3:51 pm

Ulmarid is an isolated planet in the Vast, uninhabited by intelligent creatures. The planet's two large moons collided ages ago, resulting in a field of tumbling debris high in orbit that prevents easy access to the planet's surface. Even if explorers could pass through this erratic field of asteroids, the planet seems to have little to offer. Ulmarid is mostly a desert world, with poisonous crystalline rains and screaming winds.

The data scavenged from the Endless Thredony indicates that one of their scout ships found the wreckage of the Unbounded Wayfarer on the surface of Ulmarid. That ship had evidently been attacked by pirates or the like, crash-landed, and a distress beacon triggered. The scout looted the ship of valuables, and then moved on.

Your ship comes out of the Drift on approach to the planet. Sensors show no other ships in the vicinity. The extensive orbital debris makes it difficult to do much scanning from far away, and approaching through the rocky field would take skill and daring. In a larger ship, it would be all but impossible.

Quig comes up to the bridge when the ship arrives at Ulmarid. He gazes at the debris field and the planet on the sensor screens. "Too much junk! Looks like my uncles Guigmok's den. One time we found a dead cat in his things, been dead-dead for years, he never knew, too much junk-junk." Quig then turns to the sensors and attempts to scan the debris again for heat signatures, movement, power levels, he tweaks and adjusts narrowing the bandwith to focus on smaller areas.
Let's try and scan or adjust scans again to search the debris for hidden ships, etc

"The Mother of Graves may have delivered us to the these souls after their passage."

Keskodai makes this remark without rancor, as if the situation, while inopportune, was always a possibility he had considered.

The Loreseeker is an excellent expeditionary ship, with perfectly serviceable engines and weaponry. In the past the sensor suite has served excellently as well - identifying weak points in enemy ships, for example. But in this case the chaos of the asteroid field is too much for the system to handle. It can't make sense of the patterns, and cannot build a predictive model of where safer corridors might form.

Unexpectedly, the greatest help comes from Keskodai. The crew has come to respect the priest. Despite his insectoid form, his doting parenting and clear religious devotion has made a number of the humans perceive him as a natural leader. They interpret his cryptic statement to mean that the expedition has the eye of the Mother of Graves, that the hand of prophecy will guide them to recover the lost Starfinders, and return their bodies home. They work with perfect efficiency, making the ship run as best as it possibly can for the task ahead.
Quig does a Computers check: Fail (sometimes, you just roll a 1). No drawback, just no benefit to the Piloting check.
Keskodai does a Diplomacy check: Success (exactly on the DC). The crew are inspired, giving a +2 on the future Piloting check to navigate the asteroid field.

Jalesh approaches the ship's cockpit as the ship starts getting closer to Ulmarid, still sore from the bumps he took fighting with the undead, he stretches a bit letting out a sigh when the motion causes his wound to give a jolt or two.

"Barkley, do you want me to pilot us trough? I am quite sure i can get us there in one piece without much trouble." With that Jalesh puts his hand on the man's large shoulder, a gesture of comradely.
Sorry it took me so long to post. My bad.

Barkley gestures expansively at the pilot console, and sets himself in the co-pilot seat to assist. The rest of the crew is active at their stations, carefully watching their instrumentation.

Jalesh changes the angle of approach from their high orbit, nudging the nose towards the planet and accelerating. The asteroid field surrounding the planet is dense and chaotic. Perhaps it used to have a small moon that was shattered by a large asteroid impact, or perhaps it used to have two moons that collided. Regardless, it takes all the skill the vesk soldier has to wend his way through the mess. Their small ship takes a few glancing impacts, but those are easily absorbed by the shields and cause nothing more than a flicker of lights as the power supply compensates. Within the hour, they are through.

As they clear the rocky interference, the sensors begin to pick up faint emissions. After a minute or tuning out the interference, it is clearly a weak distress signal, carrying the ident key of a Starfinder ship!

Looking over the distress signal data, Jalesh looks at the rest of the crew and asks "shall we?"

Quig's nose twitches, "Distress call!"

He calls from the engine room, "Engines ready to seek the call!"

"Quickly, but carefully."

Keskodai pats his son's cradle-jar.

"We'll see any survivors safely home."
