Chapter 3: The Unbounded Wayfarer

Post by Vardaen » Fri May 10, 2019 4:02 pm

Quig shouts over the vox, "Their engines are over stressed! They have double looped their output manifold into the plasma relay for more power! That's weakening their reduction rate and causing their coolant coils to be hot-hot-hot! If their flux recombinators don't blow from extended use a jolt to the external ion vent ports might cause a cascade reaction"

He realizes no one understood him, "I mean to say they can't keep up their speed for too long, or if you HIT THEM IN THE ENGINES it might blow them all to scrap!"

Keskodai stares blankly at the box after the first burst of Quig's insight. At the second, he perks up.

"Engines! Got it!"

He unleashes another volley.

Still unsure what to do Zindfal offers up words of encouragement to Keskodai. "Honored Companion, I have seen you face down more harrowing foes than this! Your hand will be steady and your aim will be true!"

Chapter 3: The Unbounded Wayfarer

The newcomer seems to be a natural leader, despite the crew's unfamiliarity with him. Zindfal's natural charisma and presence emotionally moves them, and they go about their business with renewed faith in their own abilities.

Quig stands his ground, continuing the scans of the enemy ship. Despite the chaos of the station, he keeps the sensors targeted right on the power fluctuations he identified a few minutes before.

While port and starboard mean significantly less in three-dimensional space, it is still a generally useful tool for those aboard in understanding what part of the ship is facing where. Actual navigation tends to consist of established coordinates, or angles in relation to paths of other objects. Jalesh is perfectly used to such complications through his piloting training, and almost instinctively jukes the ship hard to starboard, slamming a number of people hard against the port walls. Good thing he did, as another round of torpedoes and magnetically-accelerated projectiles streak through the space you so recently vacated. He manages to make a hard turn, bringing the two ships alongside each other.

Then Keskodai and the crew of the Loreseeker open fire. The light lasers do little more than create a pretty light show, but the coilgun fires sturdier stuff. The cleric connects directly with the enemy ship, dispersing its shields and damaging the hull. Everyone holds their breath for a moment, wondering if that would do it. Unfortunately the stressed systems are buried deep enough that the surface damage doesn't manage to unsettle any precarious balances.

As determined beforehand, despite the maneuverability advantage of your ship, the Lawblight is a more powerful beast in open combat. Evading its weapons twice seems to have infuriated the crew, and they unleash round after round of ferromagnetic bullets accelerated to nigh-relativistic speeds directly into your center of mass. Your shields overload within an instant, and large chunks of the armored hull are disintegrated with the massive impact. A section of the hull facing the enemy is breached, but blast doors automatically deploy before the entire ship can depressurize. For now the ship is holding together, but how long can it last?
Option #3 it is!
General Turn Order for Space Combat is anything internal happens first (repairs, boosts, etc.), then everyone Moves, then everyone Shoots. Usually there are contested Piloting Checks each turn to establish Initiative within those, but since I'm keeping it simple your actions will always happen before theirs.

PCs:
- Zindfal tries to Inspire the crew: 8+7 = 15, Success. +2 to the other's Rolls.
- Quig keeps up the Scanning to isolate the best spots: 17+9+2(ship)+2(Zindfal) = 30, Success. Additional +2 to Attack Rolls.

- Jalesh tries to Maneuver for a better shot: 8+3(skill)+1(ship)+2(Zindfal) = 14.
--- Contested Piloting Roll vs Enemy Ship: 3+1 = 4.
----- Jalesh wins. Managed to U-turn and move to their Right Flank. Another success on the Contested Piloting Roll should get you completely behind them.

- Keskodai shoots with the Coilgun: 13+2+2(Zindfal)+2(Quig) = 19, Success. Hits their 'Right' shields for 9. Only 5 Shields on the side, so rolls over into 4 Hull Damage.
- Crew fires the right-facing Light Laser: 6+2(Zindfal)+2(Quig) = 10, Miss.
--- d100 Roll for "No, Not Like This!" failure: 15%, Nope. They're still intact.

Lawblight: You moved out of the Front Arc, so can't hit you with the front-facing coilgun and torpedoes. Can still shoot you with the Turret Coilgun: Nat 20!
- In Starfinder a Nat 20 auto-confirms for Double Damage, and activates any special abilities of the weapon/class. No specials here, so just double damage for 21! Takes 10 to penetrate your shields, then the rest is hull damage.
Lawblight (enemy): Front Shields (-11), Right Shields (0/5). -4 Hull.
Loreseeker (you): Right Shields (0/10), Hull (44/55).
- Note the Space Combat thread in OOC. Engineers/Science Officers can do things like move around Shields and such to improve survivability.
- Facing is like cars passing each other on the freeway. They're likely to try to turn 'right' to get you back in their front arc next turn.

Jalesh let's out an expletive laden remark as the side of the ship is hit as he maneuvers to try and minimize the damage received. "Alright, you want to play rough, i can play rough." He says to no one in particular.
Piloting check, since we are side by side, i would like to try a hard brake to make the Lawblight over shoot our position, so that we can get behind them.
If anyone has any suggestions i am open to them.

"Shields are down! Give me more power to the coil inducers..." you can hear Quig on the comms, he's not talking to anyone, but he didn't spent the time to turn them off, so you catch sounds of him shouting at crewmen or talking to himself. "..I need some self sealing stem bolts!" There is a power surge and rerouting of energy as Quig attempts to get power back to the shields.
Let's try and get the shields back up!

Chapter 3: The Unbounded Wayfarer

Zindfal opens the comms to the enemy ship, and begins to promise death and damnation to befall them. The latest hit seems to have unnerved whomever picked up, because you hear them panickingly try to shut off the signal.

Quig moves into the shield controls, trying to transfer power from one section to another. Their right side is looking mighty bare at the moment, and any buffer between them and magnetically-accelerated doom would be appreciated right now. He hasn't performed this before on this ship, so he fumbles a little with the power routing protocols. After a minute he thinks he has it, and executes the procedure. Right after he pushes the final button he realizes that he accidentally tied the main power drive into the shields, and the whole thing is going to blow! ... except that it doesn't. As he sits there hyperventilating, the conduits hold, and the shields thrum with power. Looks like Starfinder engineering can hold up to the stress.

Jalesh could likely continue the 'ring around the rosies' action, but instead hits the breaks hard. The retros burn, and the enemy ship overshoots on the turn, exposing more of their backside than they really want to.

Both ships fire off their Coilguns ... and nobody hits. Keskodai was thrown off by the damage and the hard stop, but the enemy guns barely miss. Perhaps the threatening words affected them pretty badly?
Engineering Phase:
Zindfal: "Taunt" action: 13+7, Success! Ship 'Shaken' for 1d4 Rounds = 1 Round.
- Can only succeed on this once per ship per combat, so will have to choose something else next round.
Quig: "Balance" action, to shift Shields from one section to another: Nat 20! Alright, your Crit raises all Shields to Full!

Helm Phase:
Jalesh: Hit the Brakes? 14+3(skill)+1(ship) = 18, Success. You pull the ship to a dead stop.
Enemy Ship: Turns Right to follow.
--- End Result: Their Right side is facing your Back side, although they did pull farther ahead than they wanted. You have the option of shooting their Right or Rear. Going with Rear.

Gunnery Phase:
Keskodai: Shooting with the Coilgun: 6+2 = 8, Miss.
Enemy Ship: Shooting with the Coilgun: 14-2 = 12, Miss (because of the Taunt!!!)

Summary:
Lawblight (enemy): Front Shields (-11), Right Shields (0/5). -4 Hull.
Loreseeker (you): ALL SHIELDS FULL, Hull (44/55).
