Intro - House Vadalis Consult

Post by Vardaen » Mon Apr 07, 2014 8:02 pm

Th Grey Company, or as many around Stormreach are calling it The Grey Tower, has an open call out for new members. Honest, adventurous sorts looking to make a difference in Stormeach. Already a dozen new faces have joined the Company in the last few weeks, from porters to paladins, from bards to battlemaidens. The Tower is about at its peak right now, but the doors remain open.

This day Val'rith has found himself busier than most. He recently sent a small group of troubleshooters out to see about stopping some kidnappings in the Harbor District, answering a call from the Harbor Lord's office. He also has those same men on a mission to collect an ancient shard of great power. Unfortunately he's had to reduce their numbers by 1 because of a need for Gred a dwarven monk of the Silver Flame to look into a matter related to the Silver Flame Church and the relations the Tower has with them.

Things appear to be getting worse for the small party, for ten minutes ago the Warforged Wizard known as Shard arrived and asked to speak to him. Shard is waiting in one of the second floor conference rooms right now speaking to Second Platoon's Guard Lieutenant Bashir. The human monk is playing with a dagger, flipping it between his fingers as he listens to Shard's report. Word has been sent to Val to come down at once, it seems important enough.

On top of Shard's report, there is a halfling down stairs speaking to Imric the company's Adjutant. It seems the halfling is or was some sort of aid to the House Vadalis here in Stormreach, but rumors have been swirling about trouble among their hired help. Curiously enough one of them has shown up, and Val will have to speak to him shortly.
This thread is a welcome thread for Brunotr! Also a bit of a Good-bye to Wayloss for the time being. Brunotr wait for a cue for you to start posting!

Shard's thread arrives from here:

Val makes his way down the stairs, appearing to be unhurried, despite his intense interest in hearing what Shard has to say. Nothing makes people panic more than seeing the big boss looking worried. So it was his job to look calm and collected at all times. A few moments later, he steps into the second floor conference room and gives a nod to Bashir, then looks to the warforged wizard.

So what brings you back to the tower so soon?" he asks.

Shard offers his report. "We have done a search for the missing people. First we visited the Harbor Lord's offices and learned little from them. Then the Stormreach Guard, a particular constable named Jute was helpful in telling us the people have all been found with their memories lost of the event. None of the people were vagrants, but merchants and working folks. We then spoke to one of them, but he was of no real help. Oloven and I both detected residue of magic on him, but could not pin point further details. I returned to report. The others were going to investigate rumors of Lhazzarite Slavers near the Puffy Pullican tonight, perhaps they are involved according to Constable Jute. I find my skills in this sort of activity to be less than optimal. It would be more efficient if you had someone else to join the group."

"Very well," Col. d'Orien replies. "We'll take you off this assignment." He pauses for a moment in thought, then adds. "Head up to the ninth floor. Talan and Sylene are trying to get the arcane branch in order. See what you can do to help them out."

The artificer takes a seat at the table and looks over to Bashir. "Head downstairs and tell Lt. Forester that I'll see the halfling now. No sense putting that off since I'm already here."

The guard captain nods, "Yes sir." He heads down stairs and collects the halfing there. A few minutes later all three arrive, "Sir." Bashir salutes and when dismissed heads back to work.

Lt. Imric Forester escorts the newest man to the second floor. "Sir, another potential..." he looks at the halfling, "I'll let him introduce himself."

The halfling looks as most of them do. But this one looks a little less..."savage" them usual. A bit over three feet high, he has brown hair under a brown, rugged leather hat. There are two big fangs on this hat just above the forehead, tied with a leather strip. He wears a thick cape over his shoulder, leather gloves, pants and boots, and a carefully made chain shirt. Between the metal shirt and the cape there's a volume that denotes a round shield. And he is carrying a sheathed sword.
As soon as he enters the room, Helion take is hat off as a sign of respect. When the lieautenet looks at him, he steps forward and says, "Helion, sir, from the Atlib clan. I'm here looking for a job."
If weapons are not allowed in the tower, please ignore the mention of a sword and shield.

Seated at the table is a handsome man in his mid-twenties with blonde hair and blue eyes, wearing dark trousers, black boots, a white shirt and a blue vest. The vest has a black patch on the right breast, one with the image of a grey tower on it. Over his shoulder the man is wearing a small satchel, and on his belt is an ornate scroll case, a leather quiver, and a rapier. He stands and offers the halfling his hand.

"Welcome to the Grey Tower, Helion," he says, shaking the halfling's hand. "I'm Colonel Val'trith d'Orien, commander of the Grey Company. And as it happens, we're still looking for skilled recruits." He gestures to a chair. "Please, take a seat." Then he resumes sitting in the chair he was sitting in when Helion entered the room.

"Lt. Forester says that you've done work with House Vadalis here in Stormreach. What were the circumstances of you leaving their service, and would they be willing to give you a favorable recommendation? Also, what skills do you possess that might be of interest to the Grey Company?"

Weapons are allowed at least as far as the second floor, so there's no problem with that.

Helion is shy and patiently waits for the man to sit before sitting holding his hat with both hands. "Yes, sir, I used to work for them. My whole family actually. But they are reducing their numbers due to the beast in the sea. I volunteered to leave and now I need to find another job. Heard you were recruiting, then came to see if I can be of use. I guess they would recommend me since I've always been a good employee. I worked as a dinosaur wrangler and know how to fight too. And I have a brother from another plane that helps me since young age. He's a fierce beast, y'know?", he laughs. "I can cast a few spells too, but nothing fancy."

"Ah," Val says, nodding, "you're talking about the kraken. Yes, that has interfered with a lot of trade around here lately." He takes a small journal from his haversack and opens it up, taking a pencil out from a small slot inside of it. Then he begins to jot down a few notes. "Fighting and a bit of magic. That's a good start." A few more scribbles. "Skill at dinosaur wrangling tells me that you're tough." He continues writing comments. "But I'm intrigued about your planar ally. I've heard of people who had some kind of a link with a celestial creature called an eidolon." The colonel looks up from his journal. "I'm assuming that's what you're talking about. The people who are able to forge such links are those with minor sorcerous bloodlines, which would explain the lesser magics you can do."

"Can you summon him now?" He raises an inquisitive eyebrow. "I'd love to have a chance to see what his capabilities are - though I understand that they're mutable over time."
I'm assuming that a take ten on a K(arcane) would tell Val at least that much.

"Yes, most people call him an eidolon. I call him brother. Our lives are connected. They say he looks different everytime he comes back, but I don't see any difference in him. It takes a while to summon him, but I can do it if you really want to. Just don't mind his manners as he prefers the plain and hills instead of rooms like these."
Helion waits for a positive reply and then begins his summoning ritual. He kneels, takes a deep breath and closes his eyes. He mumbles a bit and joins his hands in front of him. He stands after a while with eyes still closed and raises his right hand to his shoulder height. It stays there for a second or two and then, as if it was always there, the outline of a big animal can be seen. At first it is just a difference in lighting. Then the air starts to change color as parts of a giant lizard materializes. In a few seconds there's a heavy breathing raptor in the room. He hisses and looks at Helion by his side. "You called, brother?"
Helion points at the Colonel and says, "Shakti, this is Colonel Val'trith. Colonel, Shakti." And the beast lowers his massive head in response.
