Arveene wrinkles her nose, and then looks around as though she heard a noise. She readies her crossbow and whispers, "Those lugs failed to mention that something down here could talk. See anything, Sunny?"

Let me know the marching order or generally where everybody is at (front, middle, back), if you're entering into the building via the tunnel. You know, just in case...

Lorenzo stays in the middle or at the back, letting his tougher companions go first.

"Nope, nope, nope."

Its all your little gnome offers as the mental whispers in his head talk about eating him.

He backs up, wiggling through the group until he's last in the line.

Once he's safely not about to get eaten first he draws his weapon and looks ready to try the front door.

Grogg has seen some nasty things in his wanderings through the wilderness, and while the smell is unpleasant he has experienced worse. Not that he relishes the scent, but he wants to get in and out quickly. He takes the lead, pushing forward into the cavern.
Grogg will take point.

As Grogg leads the group into the underground portion of the manor, they spot a one-eyed creature hiding behind one of the large stone columns near the west ends of the bridges. This monstrous creature has terrible talons and a large baleful eye peering at them. The creature seems content to watch, weight, and assess the group.

To the right/east of the group is a steep-sided fissure about 5-10 feet wide and 20 feet deep. The faint smell of decaying flesh is seemingly coming from the fissure.

Seeing that the group has not responded to the Nothic's suggestion, the creature speaks in undercommon saying, "Bring me flesh. Fresh meat. Hungry." The creature doesn't make any sudden, threatening moves, but it appears that the group needs to make an offering or they might be considered a threat.

Sasha looks at the others. She doesn't have any meat on her (and she'd make a paltry meal for the creature herself). "Anyone got anything?" she whispers.

Sasha w/ Arcane skill = 3 success, all knowledge below
Grogg w/ Arcane skill = 2 success, Basic & Intermediary knowledge
Arveene w/ Arcane skill = 1 success, basic knowledge
Lorzeno w/ Arcane skill = 2 success, basic & intermediary knowledge
Sunny w/ Arcane skill = fail, no knowledge

The below is "book knowledge" and is general information, so everything may not apply directly to the specific nothic standing in front of you.

Basic Knowledge: A nothic is a monstrous creature with terrible talons and a single great eye. When driven to violence, it uses its horrific gaze to rot the flesh from its enemies’ bones.

Intermediary Knowledge: Nothics possess a strange magical insight that allows them to extract knowledge from other creatures. This grants them unique understanding of secret and forbidden lore, which they share for a price. A nothic covets magic items, greedily accepting such gifts from creatures that seek out its knowledge.

Advanced Knowledge: Rather than gaining the godlike supremacy they crave, some wizards who devote their lives to unearthing arcane secrets are reduced to creeping, tormented monsters by a dark curse left behind by Vecna, a powerful lich who, in some worlds, has transcended his undead existence to become a god of secrets. Nothics retain no awareness of their former selves, skulking amid the shadows and haunting places rich in magical knowledge, drawn by memories and impulses they can’t quite understand.

For the first time since any within the cavern have met her, Arveene looks shaken. She swears under her breath, something about the bandits currently locked up.

She answers Sasha, "I read about it. They call it a 'nothic'. Just don't give it a reason to attack, or it'll use that eye to rot you down to the bone. That's all I remember."

"Aye, I remember. But do we have anything to appease it?"
